15 Acts of Kindness That Teach Us Compassion Still Brings Lonely Hearts Back to Happiness

The coziest spot in my first apartment wasn’t the living room. It was a hall closet I cleared out and turned into a reading nook, with floor pillows and a lamp from a yard sale. Friends laughed at it until they sat down and refused to get up. These 15 people made their own cozy corner at home for fall, and many started with a space nobody wanted.
“We transformed our 90s entertainment center in a reading nook”
We never had a TV in there. Only bought the place a few years ago, but the house was built in the 90s and has some outdated quirks like this.
It was way too deep to put a modern flatscreen in, so it was basically storage until we figured out what to do with it.
It’s a lot roomier than it looks in these pics.
The cushion is a twin mattress, so it doubles as a guest bed.
They’re individual white oak dowels cut in half.
There are two recessed, adjustable lights in the ceiling, one on the left and one on the right.

“My balcony where I spend all of my time ft. my cat Tater”
I have a cover for the TV, and if it’s gonna be really bad I have a shower curtain I put over my cushions and bring the TV in. But the space is pretty well covered, and even when it’s storming I don’t get a lot of moisture.
I’m the luckiest duck! No birds come here and bugs are minimal! I got hella spiders that take good care of me.
Ooo I’ve been calling it Tater’s Terrace but I do like Lair a LOT.
It’s all super lightweight and modular! I sweep, and if it needs it I use my regular vacuum on the rug.

“My little green bedroom. My mom crocheted the green blanket for me.”
I really love the blanket she made, it has all kinds of different patterns and it’s in my favorite color. But all these compliments, love and kindness mean a lot to me and my mom.
I live in the Netherlands. The bungalow is a little outdated.
The lighting cord exists of two cables twisted together. I nailed it to the ceiling with tiny nails in between the twisted cables.
[My cat] walks around all the time like he owns the place and I’m his humble servant.
The only thing in my closet nook that didn’t come from a yard sale was a pothos grown from a cutting of my grandmother’s plant. I set it on a stool by the lamp, and by winter it hung down over the pillows. It’s twenty years old now and still sits in whatever corner I read in. A cozy corner usually holds one thing somebody else gave you.
“I made a reading nook. Swipe for before picture.”
Also it’s great for napping.
The chairs weren’t really that comfortable (I’ve had them for a few years so I know). I had been on the lookout for a couple of new chairs, but didn’t really find any I thought would be an upgrade within my budget. So the idea of a DIY project came about.
The intended use is also more lounge/daybed than traditional sitting so it kinda works. I’ve kept both chairs and made the platform easily removable if I regret it.
They don’t go the full length (in this economy!?). They are only scraps from a previous project.
Flat coated retriever in this case. The dark/grey color scheme isn’t chosen randomly.
“Landlord called it a closet — we turned it into a sunroom for sunrises like this.”
He basically said, “The last tenants had this set up as their walk in closet, but if the two of you are going to become three anytime soon...” and I just cringed and clung to the word closet.
It’s wild for me because that really was the size of my first apartment. It’s strange to sit in here and see how far I’ve leveled up.
I really wanted to find an antique daybed. Now the sunroom doubles as a guest room when friends stay over.
It is France. Believe it or not, this is Marseille.
“Cozy bunk beds that my dad built for my kids.”
The kids feel really safe with the doors closed at night. It’s like sleeping in a tree house or fort.
My kids are pretty funny looking, but that’s a plush Dino on the top bunk.
A dinosaur named Apendectomy.
My dad made an extra 2-3 inches between the mattress and the walls, so it’s actually surprisingly easy to change the bedding. And totally tempting to nap in there after putting the clean sheets on.
“Since we are moving, I had to say goodbye to my reading nook today.”
This was stuffed into a 2-room-apartment. We had to move because we both work from home, so we def needed more rooms. We used the book shelves to separate the room into two parts.
Most of the credit should go to my bf though. It was his idea, I just added the plants.
I mean the apartment is free in two months. But without the shelves, it is just the corner of a big room.
It’s okay though, we are moving to a much bigger apartment, so I will have more space :)
I’ll see what will be possible in the new apt!
“I built a cozy reading nook for my daughters, and now one won’t leave!”
I mentioned I’ve been thinking about building this for a few years. Those sets have been accumulated and sitting in a bedroom cupboard for years, too.
The build of the whole thing was 6 days. 3 for the furniture. 3 for the lego. Only when they all went up was it complete :-)
All [you] need is 5 sheets of plywood, a couple of saws and drills. Super Easy :-)
Daughter #2 is less of a reader, and more of an outdoors person. But if I was to build a flight simulator to fill out the space, it would be a totally different conversation.
My closet fit exactly one person, and that turned out to be its best feature. Whoever got there first kept it, so friends started coming over early. I’ve stopped seeing a fight over a corner as a problem. Nobody argues over a spot that isn’t worth sitting in.
“My front porch on a fall afternoon”
It’s in Vermont! The mountain is Mt Ascutney.
Cannot see one single house, even way in the distance and even when the leaves fall off. Not one single light at night either. Just trees and hills and mountains. I love it! Our nearest neighbor is just over 1/3 mile away.
I have two kids. One in first grade and a toddler.
It was nap time. That’s the ONLY time.
They’re my cushions. I’ll wear my shoes if I want
“Couldn’t afford the wallpaper I wanted, so painted instead. Can you spot my cat?”
The paper was $570/roll. I already had the paint (many of it samples from other projects, some of it free from my work) so I figured worse case I could paint over it if it looked terrible. I didn’t know that I could do it; it was my first mural like this.
Just interior flat paint- mostly samples!
All in probably took me about 6 hours.
And in my case the labor was free....because it was me doing it in my spare time for fun.
“We upgraded our dog’s bed area and gave him his own cozy corner.”
A lot of people don’t realize I thought this up over a few days. Like obviously not a real candle over him and the lights get turned off at bedtime. I just ignore those comments tho, I know our sweet boy is well taken care of.
These are faux plants I kept that in mind haha.
Trust me he’s not actually overweight he just has chow in him that gives him really loose skin and his hair is super poofy he just looks like a chonk
“Surprised my wife and turned our guest room into a cozy gaming/reading room for her.”
I told her I just needed a place to “build” something and blocked off the room. Only have 1-2 free days a week to work on it so it took me a little over a month on my off days!
I have before photos, but basically just picture a sad blank room with one overhead light. Nothing on the walls and no furniture/shelves. One bed in the corner with a ton of collected [stuff] because it was easy to just “throw it in the spare room”
She did I showed her last night! It’s actually her 30th birthday present. She’s been my one and only since we were 15!
I reached the “she’ll be excited but I’ve spent too much zone” and pumped the brakes haha.
[The candle lights] turn on with a wizard wand lol.
That lighthouse lamp projects the moon onto the wall! It was only like 11 bucks too!
That closet was in a rental, so I couldn’t paint it or put a single nail in the wall. Everything in it had to fit into one trip when I moved out: the pillows, the lamp, the pothos. Maybe that’s why it felt so much like mine. A corner made of things you can carry goes wherever you go next.
“6 months difference, first day after moving out from my husband and today.”
I turned 31 this year and when I tell you sometimes it is better to cut the cord and start over, I mean it. It is hard and it takes a lot but looking back I’m more than happy now :) There is always a good time to start fresh!
It is very important to me to have your own corner and feel good where you spend a lot of time.
Trust me, one day you will wake up and all of those negative emotions will be gone. Just keep on going, do your things constantly and be kind to yourself :)
“my cozy book book (and my cat)”
book NOOK
Go figure, I make a title typo and it goes a little viral.
And that’s why I bought the house. I saw that room and these doors and I was sold.
The window seat is for my cats. My comfy spot was my bed.
“Moved last month. Finally have a bedroom big enough for a papasan reading nook.”
Cat is named Archie. Adopted him and his sister Millie back when my child was nonverbal, hoping they’d bond and chat with each other. Worked like a charm and we love them so much.
I found the triple dresser at [a thrift store] for $30. The bench is from [a resale app]. I bought it a few years ago to use as an entry way bench, which worked great. This house doesn’t have an entry way. Front door opens right into the living room.
Mine is getting plump. He lives to eat.
He’s on diet food and I got a harness to walk him. He’s not keen on it (keeps plopping over on his side when I put it on) but we’ll keep trying.
The coziest corner in a home is almost always made, not bought. These started as an old TV niche, a closet, a wall of bookshelves and a blanket somebody’s mom crocheted.
Where’s the coziest corner in your home right now? Tell us in the comments.
