15+ Gift Stories That Prove the Most Thoughtful Present Is One That Could Only Exist for You

• My mother-in-law gave me a handmade gift for my birthday. I opened the bag, and there was an ordinary tablecloth inside. I was even a little upset. A couple of days later, I was sitting with a friend and jokingly showed her my mother-in-law’s gift. I unfolded it properly and was stunned. My portrait was knitted into the fabric, worked out in incredible detail. There was also a small packet with a gold necklace inside. So much for an ordinary tablecloth. I was wrong about my mother-in-law all along. Several years have passed since then, but I still keep it carefully and show it to everyone. My mother-in-law really is a great person.

• My husband decided to surprise me for my birthday... I was ready for anything: from burnt toast to “I ordered pizza.” But he made sushi rolls. With his own hands. Yes, the rice popped out here and there, and the “top” wasn’t perfectly even, but it was the most heartfelt gift of my life.

• I have a hard time shopping for people. So I typically end up making their favorite (or requested upon asking) dessert for birthdays. And then for Christmas, everyone gets a box of homemade cookies. I usually put 6-8 different kinds in those. They have always been well-received. Most of the people I give gifts to either don’t know how to bake, are just not good at it, or are not physically capable of baking anymore. It seems to be working well enough. Reduces my shopping/decision stress. They all seem to enjoy getting the baked goods. And it doesn’t result in a bunch of Knick knacks that might not be to their taste.

• My sister-in-law has very little money and has always made gifts for us and the kids and I treasure them! Some of our faves include ceramic trays for jewellery or little snack bowls, fishing lures, carved toys for the kids, baking (one year she baked several types of cookies for the freezer to use for lunchbox snacks!), bath salts and body scrubs, pot plants decorated by my nieces and nephews, one year they really had no budget and she wrote her favourite recipes in a notebook and I felt so honored she would share them with me! Oh, and she’s also done seeds harvested from her garden! Her gifts are usually my most treasured because she spends a lot of time putting thought into them.

He recently picked up a new hobby. It’s called “Ebru.” It’s a traditional Eastern art of painting on water, where patterns made with insoluble paints are transferred onto paper. He says it’s incredibly relaxing. He enjoys every minute during his classes. Most of the people in the group are older, but he feels completely comfortable there — the atmosphere is so warm and welcoming. And I can’t wait to see his new pieces. They’re so interesting to look at — truly mesmerizing. And my eyes get such a nice break while I follow all the streaks and little bubbles — it feels like I’ve done eye exercises.

• My grandma really loves bees. She has all kinds of little bee-themed trinkets. I decided to give her something I knew she’d love. I found a small ceramic birdhouse shaped like a beehive and painted it with acrylics. I attached little bee figurines, and to create the look of honey dripping down, I used colored epoxy resin with glitter.

• My husband gave me some ridiculous head massager for my milestone birthday. I got upset, we had a little spat, and he ran off somewhere. He came back in the evening, flushed and rumpled. He took my hand and pulled out a small box: “Babe, I spent my whole paycheck on this.” I looked at it and could barely hold back my laughter — the box held a gold bracelet with an engraving that, judging by the look of it, my husband had done himself, because there was a mistake in one word. Just one letter, but it was so him. What could I do? I put it on proudly, and now I never take it off. He wrote: “For my gorgeus wife.”

• My niece does home baking, and she has a pretty good business going. I found this box at Dollar tree that says something along the lines of recipes Holiday bakery or something like that. The heart box is made from polymer clay. With a slight shimmer added with eyeshadow. A wire painted and then sealed with UV resin is what I used for the stem of the cherry. And it has a small book inside that is supposed to be like a small recipe book, but it’s a little photo album of all the pictures of her and her family and friends.

• A friend gave me a bouquet made of flowers she crocheted herself for my birthday. It’s still sitting on my bookshelf because I still haven’t found the right little vase for it. So I decided to give her something heartfelt too. I thought about it for a long time and looked for something she might like. I almost ordered a very expensive candle, but in the end, I painted a portrait on a mini canvas. She and her boyfriend have matching profile pictures on social media, so I painted that photo. I also bought 2 heart-shaped pendants that open up, with space inside for a photo. She had wanted one for a long time. “Let them be matching,” I thought. Her boyfriend later thanked me separately for the gift. And I just know she loves him very much, so I knew she’d be happy with a gift like that. It seemed like she liked it.

• A friend of mine is studying to become a marine biologist. I’ve known him since he was really little. And he’s always loved the ocean. I had a nautical Bezel (so lucky) so I did a thin layer UV resin, hand-painted a small beach landscape and used star sand (from Japan. It’s actually fossilized little sea creatures that look like grains of sand, but in the shape of stars) and sand dollar doves (when you break up a sand dollar the inner bone structure looks like 5 little birds) to make the scene more dynamic. I also wrote on the back “As the tide wills” and wrote a note that goes with it that says something along the lines that this is a little reminder that no matter the path we choose in life and how much effort we put into following it sometimes the tides of life take us somewhere completely new.

• I was apprenticing at a violin shop and making diddly-squat. My boyfriend at the time made good money, had everything he needed. I couldn’t afford something he wanted. So I made him a keychain with several polished beads of hardwood. Rosewood, heartwood, ebony, Pernambuco, etc. I attached a little card that explained the woods and made little love puns about each of them. He said it was the most thoughtful gift that he ever received and always showed it off to friends.

• My friend’s birthday is in January. She really loves cats. I decided to put in some extra effort and make her a custom calendar. I drew cats, transferred the images to the computer, arranged everything, and printed it out. Then I bought a pretty frame with 4 photo openings. I slipped in the calendar pages and gave it to her. She was thrilled. She put it on her desk right away.
