15 People Whose Interior Design Choices Prove Weird Can Still Be Wonderful

Some interior design choices shouldn’t work, and that’s exactly what makes them wonderful. A kitchen cabinet that makes you stop and stare, furniture placed like a puzzle, a room that reveals more truth than any matching set ever could.
These people found happiness in a design nobody else would have decided on. A few moments belong in soap operas. Others quietly show kindness hiding inside a small home renovation gone happily off track. Weird, as it turns out, was the whole point.
1. “Never thought I would see the infamous carpeted bathroom with my own two eyes... Yikes.”
Tips & Tricks: A moisture-resistant tile or vinyl surround with a rubber-backed bath mat gets that same soft, warm feel underfoot without the mold risk.
2. “The ’bathroom’ in my Airbnb will 100% result in awkward encounters with the host.”
- Ha! Is this real? How was it described in the ad? © beaniebow / Reddit
- Yeah. I can’t imagine it’s easy to explain, they were probably hoping I wouldn’t notice it... on the way up to my room. © Reddit
Tips & Tricks: A toilet at the top of a staircase can be hard to fix without moving the plumbing. A curtain, half-wall or sliding screen at the landing is a much cheaper way to add privacy without a full renovation.
3. Some kitchens are a little too cleverly disguised.
- My sister’s new apartment had this beautiful, minimalist interior design — clean lines, nothing extra. Nothing looked like what it actually was.
Trying to make coffee before she woke up, I pressed what I thought was a light switch near the kitchen counter. Instead, a hidden dishwasher drawer suddenly popped open from beneath the counter, sending a stack of dirty dishes clattering onto the floor.
She ran in half-asleep, laughing so hard she could barely explain, “That’s the dishwasher. It’s disguised as counter space. I forgot to mention it.”
I stood there holding a soup ladle that had somehow landed in my shirt pocket. She looked at the mess and sighed, “I guess my interior design choices got a little too clever.”
Then she pointed at the kitchen cabinet beside me. “And don’t touch that one.”
I decided I could wait for coffee.
4. “We transformed our old kitchen into a 1950s diner :)”

Not for me, I prefer wood (or, these days, wood effect) but it’s very effective, lovely … and the main, in fact ONLY thing here is that the home owner likes it. Very nice job, very well done 💖💖
Tips & Tricks: A checkerboard floor is what really sells this diner transformation, and it’s easier to pull off than it looks. Peel-and-stick vinyl tiles in black and white can turn a plain floor into that same retro centerpiece for a fraction of the cost of new flooring.
5. “The ridiculously tiny bathroom with everything you need (or don’t).”
Tips & Tricks: In a tight bathroom like this, floor space matters more than fixture count. Swapping the bulky canister vacuum and standalone bidet for a wall-mounted storage shelf and a handheld bidet attachment on the toilet frees up real walking room without losing function.
6. “Bathroom mirror at a bar in Italy.”
Tips & Tricks: For a mosaic-effect mirror, use larger pieces of mirror glass. They’ll give you a bold look while still keeping the reflection clear.
7. Some luxury features come with fins attached.
- My parents’ new apartment was packed with luxury features and furniture crammed into a tiny space. Nothing was quite where you’d expect it.
While they cooked dinner, I found what looked like a small soaking tub built into the floor of their walk-in closet. I undressed and climbed in without thinking. Mom walked past and froze. “What are you doing in my indoor koi pond?”
I looked down and saw three startled fish darting around my ankles. Apparently, she’d had it installed as a decorative water feature and thought I’d at least notice the fish before getting in.
She laughed so hard she had to sit down.
I was mortified for the rest of the dinner, but her kindness made it easier to laugh about later. I told her the whole thing was definitely the strangest interior design choice I’d ever seen — and one I’d never forget, even after all the home renovation projects I’ve witnessed.
Poor fish, having to live in a wardrobe/closet 🐠🐠🐠
8. “Bleak, gray moors of Yorkshire call to my newborn...!”

A bit dark for me, but probably nice and calming for the baby 💖
Tips & Tricks: Worth keeping any metal decor (like the hot air balloons) mounted with anchors rated for the wall type, since decorative hardware near a crib needs to be secure.
9. “I spent 15 minutes looking for a plug in my hotel room... the only one is behind the radiator.”
Tips & Tricks: Move outlets away from old radiators before refinishing the room, especially if they sit in a tight gap. Keeping them a foot or two to the side makes them safer and much easier to reach.
10. “Previous owners painted around their furniture instead of moving it.”

Just needs an artist to come in and do a painting in the space, ie on the wall rather than hanging one, so it looks like a deliberate piece of artwork
Tips & Tricks: Furniture that’s been painted around always leaves a visible outline once you rearrange the room. Repainting that section separately with a closely matched (but not identical) shade often stands out less than trying to blend it perfectly into decades-old, faded paint.
11. Some interior design choices are on a whole different level.
- My new neighbor threw a dinner party at his fancy, uniquely decorated apartment. Halfway through, I went looking for a restroom.
In the long hallway, there were several similar doors. I opened one that seemed like the obvious choice, only to stumble directly into a small, fully decorated, dollhouse-sized room built for his cat, complete with tiny furniture and a miniature chandelier.
He appeared behind me, slightly embarrassed, explaining that his cat “deserved better than a cardboard box” and that this had “gotten a little out of hand.” The cat, sitting regally inside on a miniature velvet chair, looked entirely unbothered by the sudden audience.
I told my neighbor his interior design choices were wild enough for a scene from soap operas, especially the tiny furniture. He just laughed and said, “Wait until you see the rest of the apartment.”
Hope there was a cat flap or similar little door for the cat’s ingress and egress 🙀
Look it up. Can’t be bothered? Entrance and exit 🤣. I learned that one off Norm Abram way back when we used to watch This Old House 🤣
12. “Bathroom with glass walls.”
Tips & Tricks: Frosted or switchable privacy glass keeps that same modern, open look this attic bathroom is going for without the fully see-through walls. It’s a straightforward swap if you’re building or renovating a glass-walled bathroom and still want actual privacy.
13. “What better place to have a staircase than the middle of the kitchen?”

That middle section, the one with its back to us, looks like there’s actually a ladder on the other side 🤣
Oh, I’m having fun this morning 🤣
Tips & Tricks: A tight kitchen with a staircase pillar has more storage potential than it looks. Custom corner cabinets that hug the curve, like the one already built into this layout, can turn that dead space into real storage instead of wasting it.
14. “Restaurant bathroom sink, made from... wood.”
Tips & Tricks: A wood sink basin needs a marine-grade sealant reapplied every year or so to stay watertight — worth knowing if you love the look and want it to hold up to daily splashing.
15. The one room she was told to avoid turned into the weekend’s best story.
- My boyfriend and I came to his wood cabin. Its interior design was cozy but a little unsettling. While giving me a quick tour, he pointed to a door at the end of the hallway and said, “But don’t go in there. Please.”
Curiosity won. Later that night, I opened it anyway and gasped. There were maybe 20 framed photos of a dark-haired woman smiling at the camera, covering almost an entire wall. My stomach dropped. I immediately thought they were all photos of an ex I had no idea about and that he had some unhealthy obsession with her.
Then he walked in laughing. It was actually his sister’s old room. Apparently, she loved taking pictures of herself and had left most of them behind when she moved out.
I felt ridiculous for jumping to conclusions. “Your choices really had me thinking I’d walked into one of those soap operas,” I told him. He laughed and said, “That’s exactly why I told you not to go in there.”
Looking back, his kindness in not making me feel too stupid about it was probably the best part. I still teased him about that warning for the rest of the weekend.
What these stories prove is simple: good design was never about matching, it was about meaning something to the person who lives there. Every kitchen cabinet, every piece of furniture, every bold choice here exposed a little more happiness than practicality ever could. Some moments felt dramatic enough for soap operas. Others were just a small act of kindness, tucked into a home renovation detail that nobody asked for but everyone noticed. Real life, once again, proved that weird and wonderful were the same thing all along.

Key phrase ‘meaning something to the person who lives there’ - YES, absolutely. You don’t decorate your home to please visitors, you do it to please yourself and your family.
