15 Spooky Stories Where Children’s Costumes and Trick-or-Treat Adventures Became Family & Community Memories

For many kids, Halloween is one of the biggest days in the whole year. It can be a big community event, something that the whole family gets involved in, or just a time to hang out with a few of your best friends, just dressed as your favorite characters.

With the different ways people get into the spooky season, it can also be a time to make some touching memories. Some people showcase their creativity when crafting costumes, whether for themselves or for their loved ones. Some people showcase their generosity to the local kids by going above and beyond for the trick-or-treaters. A few people have been sharing 15 Halloween memories just in time for the big day itself.

  • “The night after Halloween, my 6 YO woke me. ‘There’s a big man talking downstairs.’ I told her it was a dream, but still went to check. I gasped when I saw a tall figure in a black hat by the window. Then I heard a man’s voice. ‘I’M CALLING THE POLICE!’ I yelled. As I reached for mv phone. he started to ignore me, going on as if I hadn’t said a word. I shouted again. Then his voice changed, as if someone else was in the room. I shouted again.

I switched on the light. It was my husband’s long black coat hanging on a standing coat rack, with his Halloween hat on top. My husband was working the night shift, so we were alone in our family home. The voice came from the TV my husband had left on. I stood there holding my phone, feeling ridiculous. Then my daughter called from the bedroom, ‘Mom? Is the man gone?’ I yelled back, ’YES!’ She replied, ’Good. Tell him not to come back.’”

  • Every Halloween, my mom made sloppy joes and accompanied it with plain potato chips and pickles and we got to pick out whatever flavor pop we wanted (I always chose Orange Crush). When we were done eating my mom would load up the wagon...

Her and my aunt would walk the neighborhood with all of the kids and parents from our street. It was a blast and I miss it — our neighborhood was really into Halloween and almost every house had something special to it (think decor, neighbor dressed up to scare, haunted trails, games).

I carried on the tradition and make my mom’s sloppy joes every year and now my kids enjoy it (or they will when they’re old enough).
  • “There was a woman in my neighborhood who handed out cans of cream soda every year. I was always super excited every Halloween because my mom rarely ever let me have carbonated drinks otherwise. After trick or treating, my cousins and I would go to my grandparents’ house and have lumpia, candy, and the sodas we got from ‘the pop lady’ while sitting in front of the tv, watching whatever horror movies or Halloween specials that happened to be on.

My love for the holiday has grown exponentially over the years. I love the local pumpkin festival, visiting orchards, getting fresh baked pumpkin rolls and pumpkin spice cookies from the bakery downtown, horror movies. This time of year brings a lot of warmth for me despite how cold it gets here.”
  • “My dad always dressed up for trick or treat. My dad was hard working blue collar man (retired now). But every year for Halloween — out came the werewolf mask as he walked around the neighborhood with me. He always requested Halloween off or made sure he didn’t get stuck on second shift that day so to be available.

Now I also dress up with my kids for trick or treat :)”
  • “Growing up, my parents were absolute Halloween legends. One year, I decided I wanted to be a walking box of crayons. Did my parents panic? Nope! They raided the recycling bin for giant cardboard boxes, wrapped them in bright neon poster board, and spent hours cutting out the pointy paper hats. My dad even used black markers to draw the crayon labels down the front. I felt like a million bucks walking around the neighborhood, even if it wasn’t too easy to walk around with. Some wild creativity can go a long way.”

  • “I have so many happy memories surrounding this season. Definitely a fond memory is decorating the house. Especially my cousin’s house...

I just love Halloween decor and putting everything strategically in the yard. I also go to a local spooky walk I’ve been going to for like 8 years. It’s just such fond and happy memories and I love keeping my traditions alive!”
  • “Finishing the trick r treating night in my grandma’s living room, watching Halloween specials and eating candy in my costume before heading home for bed. At the time not too many people in the area I trick r treated would make those Halloween goody bags to give away, so I loved ending the night there because she made fat bags and it was nice to be able to give some away to other trick r treaters too. We also got to hoard the extras that weren’t given away over the course of the night. Good times.”
  • “My mom would let my sister and I pick out our costumes and she would sew them. I wish I still had more of them because they were so cool. One I do still have is a Vampire Princess dress with a corset kind tie up and a matching red sequin lined cloak AND headpiece. My mom and my aunt made mine and my best friend a matching silver and black everything; as well as a little wizard cloak for my sister with a cool sequin jingley staff. That was one of the best Halloween’s for sure.”
  • “My brother went all out a few years back for my daughter’s first Halloween. I was busy dealing with a few doctor visits and he was worried that she wouldn’t get to celebrate the holiday. Every time he went to a store, from Target to HomeGoods, he’d buy her a Halloween-themed toy or even a book every time he helped watch her, which was often more than once a week, starting as early as August.

He even gave us his copy of The Wizard of Oz because our father mentioned to him that he thought it would be an appropriate Halloween movie for her. At one point, he gave her two little toy ‘haunted houses’ crafts he made out of felt.

She was a bit too little for some of the things. She colored in a picture book he bought her about a puppy going to a pumpkin patch. Ironically, he had been planning to give her a coloring book, with crayons, the next time he visited. He didn’t buy her candy, but there were a few things he had to give back to him.

His generosity didn’t go to waste. He stood out and gave things out with some of the kids who went trick-or-treating to his house that year.”

  • “Myself and three friends had always trick or treated together. Our parents were all friends. Well the parents declared this would be our last year out. We determined to go out big. Starting September we mapped out routes, made dry runs, set up drop off points. Come Halloween it was glorious. Had more fun than we ever had. The biggest payload we ever brought home. We had Halloween candy until near Easter. Plus we ran down a jerk classmate of ours that stole some little kid’s candy. Got it back to them too. We still talk about it.”
  • “Most of my memories involve Halloween activities. I remember my first grade teacher bringing in a little grill and we all sat in quiet fascination as she salted pumpkin seeds and cooked them. She’d pass a bowl we passed around to eat the seeds as her helper read a Halloween story. My mother would have me scoop out the seeds and leave them to dry and later we’d paint the seeds and use a needle and thread to make necklaces. Also, my favorite field trip was when we went to an apple farm.”

What are some fun Halloween memories you have in your family, from costumes to holiday crafts?

  • “My great grandparents had a family farm with an old pretty run down house and barn that they only used for the yearly Halloween party. It sat on a back road with a long driveway lined with trees that had beautiful fall leaves. The young adults all dressed up in crazy costumes and we had haunted hay rides where the teens at that time would come out and scare us. As I got older and became a teen myself the adults were ’too old’ to dress up, but it was now on our shoulders to scare the younger generation. I loved it so much.”
  • “We lived in a small neighborhood when I was a kid, and several families had children. Everyone decorated their houses, garages, porches, etc. and our parents took us around the whole area in a big group to trick or treat. We’d always end the night at someone’s house, hanging out in their living room watching Halloween stuff on TV, eating candy, until it was late.

Most of all, I miss my dad carrying me on his back and putting me in bed. He did that all the time, not just Halloween night. He was an awesome guy.”
  • “My dad once built a haunted maze out of huge cardboard boxes in our front yard. There was candy hidden and secret passageways to scary ghouls. Decorated eerily! It was fun while it lasted, because overnight it snowed, and it was all covered.”
  • “When I was in elementary, my local WalMart used to make a ‘haunted house’ in a corner of the Lawn & Garden center out of stacked boxes, shredded black plastic, decorations and a spooky sounds tape in a boom box. I used to hang around there while my mom did her shopping, it felt like another world to me.”

Halloween can be a time of all sorts of things: creativity, generosity, and friendship. Of course, we can’t forget about the candy, either. Do you have any memories of bringing happiness to others on Halloween? Please share with us in the comments.
