16 Workplace Stories — From a Dog Who Got Its Own Portrait to a Boss Who Actually Read Between the Lines

Most workdays are indistinguishable from each other by Friday. Same meetings, same inbox, same commute. And then something happens that makes a specific Wednesday in October the one you still remember three years later. A customer who orders you a pizza without being asked. A stranger who buys you a tiny lucky cat because it reminded them of you. A doctor who asks for a hug at the end of a hard shift.

These 16 workplace stories are about kindness, happiness, human connection, and the small moments that arrive without warning.

  • I’m in HR. Today, I saw the engineer I recruited in May and the programmer I recruited in September walking hand in hand through the chilly parking lot, chatting sweetly and looking so in love. It made my heart feel so warm!
  • After visiting the school, my husband sent me a shopping list for our first grader. I was at the office and just sent it to print without even looking at it.
When I went to pick it up, my boss was standing there with the printout in his hand. He said, “Bad idea. How about I just give you a bonus instead?” I looked at the list, and the first item on it said, “Get a second job as a security guard!”
My jokester husband had added a few ideas of his own. And my boss really was taken aback by the list and approved a bonus for every employee with school-age kids.

  • On Friday evening, I sent the design mockup to the client and already knew what I’d be doing on Monday, because I would usually get a 5-page list of revisions after that.
Monday morning, I see an email with the subject line “Re the mockup.” I took a sip of coffee, mentally braced myself, opened it, and there was just one line inside: “Everything looks good, go ahead.”
I actually read it twice. Then I sat there for about 10 minutes, savoring that feeling: you don’t have to redo a thing!

This sweet little surprise was waiting at my desk, and everyone is wishing me a happy birthday!

  • I work at a package pickup point. One man picked up parcels from us almost every day, and we all wondered what he was buying in such huge quantities. Then yesterday, he picked up an order, stepped aside, unpacked it, and left. But he didn’t take the box!
I was about to run after him, but then I peeked inside and, oh my goodness, there were about 30 chocolate bars and a note: “Girls, I finished my renovation! Thank you! These are for you to enjoy with tea.”
We kept snacking on those chocolates for a week. He lifted our spirits in a way words can’t describe!

  • I work at a hotel. After a family checked out, I found a blue piece from a building set under the bed. I put it with the other forgotten items and went on cleaning rooms.
About 2 hours later, the front desk called: yesterday’s guests had come back and were asking whether we’d found a blue wing from a spaceship. I went downstairs with the piece and showed it to the boy. He was like, “Mine!”
Turns out they noticed it was gone while they were already on the road and convinced Dad to turn back. The little guy attached the wing to his toy, then suddenly gave me a hug.

  • I was working in jewelry at a retail store today and I was telling a customer about a beautiful carved stone cat necklace. I explained/joked how it can be tough working retail because you always spot things you’d love to get but can’t (the cat necklace was 70$). We both talked about our love of cats, etc.
Anyways, she ended up finishing her purchase and left the store. About 30 minutes later, she and a man came back to the jewelry counter holding something small out to me. She explained how she couldn’t afford to get the necklace for me so she got this instead.
It was a little lucky cat figurine. After they left, my coworker asked if I knew them and I explained that they were simply kind strangers.

Found a work buddy today!

  • I work at an electronics store. Had a customer come in who wanted to return many things. The process for this return was complicated because we sell products with software and need to test all devices.
Then I had to refit all accessories back into the boxes he brought back. The worst part is that we work on commission and the employee who originally worked with him was instead of helping me, selling another customer stuff.
The customer was hard to understand because he spoke quietly. In the middle he asked me what my favorite pizza place was out of the blue while I was busy doing the return and having other customers waiting. I told him and eventually I got everything sorted.
An hour or so later, we get a delivery from a pizza place but none of us working ordered it. Turns out it was from that customer, and the delivery driver said the customer was sorry. Overall made my day at the end of the shift, taking home a huge pizza.
  • I work at an advertising agency. I spent the whole day proofreading layouts — prices, logos, commas — and by the end, my eyes were really tired. I open another banner and spot a cat in a tie in the corner. I think, “That’s it, I’ve proofread one too many.”
I called over the designer, and he said the client sent a photo of the cat along with the materials and wrote, “This is our CEO. Please find a place for him too.” So adorable!

  • Yesterday, I volunteered to come in to work because weekends are always ridiculously busy at our restaurant and I knew they’d appreciate the help. I was slammed for most of the shift but finally got a chance to go clean up the lobby and stock some stuff we needed.
While I was wiping down all of the seats/booths in the play area, I was talking to my 5-year-old about his upcoming birthday. I was asking him what he’d like to do/what gifts he really wanted this year. He told me and I said I would do my best to get the things he really wanted, but we may not be able to get it all.
Not even a minute later, a customer sitting nearby calls me over to his table and I walk over to see what he needs. This man hands me a hundred dollar bill and says to buy my son something nice for his birthday!
I seriously almost cried because it was such a nice unexpected gesture. I’d never seen him before in my life. Thank you, kind stranger!

Someone has been placing these tiny little frogs all over the uni I work at.

  • I work at a photo studio. All day long, I print ID photos and make photocopies. One evening, a man brought in a flash drive and asked me to print a large poster. I opened the file, and there was a Great Dane with a serious expression, sitting at a festive table.
I asked, “What’s this for?” And he said, “My wife says we don’t have enough family photos on the wall.” So we ended up printing a portrait of his dog almost life-size.

  • 10 minutes before an important meeting with a client, our projector stopped working, and the printer jammed. It was too late to cancel the presentation, so we rushed to another department, printed out the most important charts, and taped them to the glass wall in the conference room.
On top of that, one of the lights in the room wasn’t working, so a coworker was illuminating our “slides” with a flashlight. And that wasn’t even the worst part.
The meeting was underway when one of the sheets started coming loose. The coworker climbed onto a chair to hold it in place, and at that very moment, the flashlight accidentally shone right into the client’s eyes.
We thought, well, that’s it. But then the client suddenly laughed and said, “Now I’ll definitely remember your presentation.” In the end, we had a great discussion and signed a letter of intent.
  • I work at a clothing store. I was pressed and stressed all day, customers being inconsiderate and trying things on the floor instead of the fitting room and not putting them back. Then came my break.
Dreading my return to the floor, I got to work trying to tidy immediately to reverse the damage done to the once neat displays. Grumbling the whole time, my negative thoughts were interrupted by this elderly woman. She said, “Thank you for all you do,” then walked away.
I was holding back tears as I was closing the floor. Was talking to my coworker on my way home, we both agreed, the day was bad, but that woman’s comment made it better.

I’m a bus driver. I came to work today and found a new friend on the bus.

  • I always had lunch at a little café near the office. The food there was delicious! The owner would sometimes give me a discount or add a pastry with my coffee, always smiling and nodding.
But one day I came in, and she suddenly said, “I won’t be serving you anymore!” I was taken aback, but she went on: “We hired a couple of girls and we’re expanding. I’m opening a second venue!”
I was so relieved: “I thought I’d done something wrong!” We had a laugh, and I wished her every success — she truly deserves it!

  • I work at a little kiosk selling all kinds of electronic accessories. A customer came in to buy a USB drive and paid in cash. I’d been working all week, and by the end of the day my head was spinning.
As I started counting out his change, I was giving him $10 bills instead of $1 ones. The customer himself stopped me, saving me from losing $100 out of my paycheck. Thank you for your honesty! It truly restored my faith in people!
  • I’m a nurse in the OR, and the surgeon I was helping with today was clearly in an off mood the entire day. And at the very end of the day, they came up to me and said, “Today was really hard for me but thank you for being in good spirits. Can I please just have a hug?” and we hugged it out.
I was not expecting that at all, it was probably the most wholesome experience I’ve ever had with a surgeon. Just wanted to share a positive experience.
  • One time, I was asked to come to work on my day off, but I simply didn’t go. Later, my boss came after me, saying I needed to write an explanation. So I wrote, “I didn’t show up for my shift because it was my day off, and it was drizzling outside.”

Small moments at work have a way of being the ones that last. If one has found you recently — the comments are open.
