12 Moments of Love When Kindness and Compassion Brought Out the Hero in Ordinary People

The year I wore the lion costume, one house on our street had a twelve-foot cardboard dragon in the yard, and every kid went back to it twice. The owner sat on the porch in a lawn chair and pretended to be scared of us. These 18 homemade Halloween yards turned ordinary neighborhoods into the place trick-or-treaters wanted to go first.
“First Halloween in our new home! Sorry, neighbors, we’re THAT house.”
Plywood, paint, and a clear coat! I measured and designed the shapes, my husband cut the plywood (he operates a CNC machine, so we had some help there) and sanded the pieces, and I painted them with house paint.
Imagine a whole block of carnivorous houses...
On day one of her Halloween yard, this DIYer started with the sidewalk itself: a giant white web stretched over the path, tall enough for trick-or-treaters to walk right through it on the way to the door.
“Halloween sidewalk tunnel — stay tuned to see my yard get spooky!”
“These fools landed in our front yard last season!!”
The skely is pvc and the skin is some kind of reflective insulation. Then we used two rolls of green led strip lights. Capped it off with a clear done umbrella for the cockpit.

The dragon down our street was made of moving boxes: forty-one, plus a pizza box for the tongue. I counted while my mom talked to the owner. The wings flapped every time a car went by, which I am now fairly sure was not on purpose. Standing under it in my lion costume, I felt very small.
“I’ve been decorating a lonesome cornstalk with a mystery person for weeks now.”
About a month ago when the farm near my house got harvested one lonely cornstalk remained randomly standing in the corner of the field. I told my partner how I “deeply related to the vibe of the lonesome cornstalk.”
A few days later he tells me someone put tinsel on it. I run outside to go look and sure enough, Halloween themed tinsel. Someone else also had a connection to the cornstalk! I added a pumpkin Halloween hat and thought that’d be the end.
The next thing I know a pumpkin shows up a few days later. So then I ran out and added the small scarecrow. Then they recently added that tiny ghost and hay bale.
I have no idea who is doing this but it’s really been a highlight of my life recently. It just felt really fun and magical. :)
“Every year I let the squirrels carve my pumpkins”
I cut slits in for the eyes and mouth, smeared with some peanut butter, and then the seeds. It’s more for guidelines for their chewing 😂
“This is the Pumpkin House in Kenova, West Virginia. It displays 3,000 jack-o-lanterns every year.”
“Ahoy Mateys! We built a Pirate Ship for our yard display this year...”
Our goal was to build a pirate ship to go with this mermaid skeleton we already had (kinda silly premise, I know). Otherwise, it’s feature complete!
“First year we’ve run out of candy.”
We had 150 full-size bars and an emergency bag of 200 minis. Went through all of it in 90 minutes, over 200 kids came by.
I had a neighbor come by to ask if we needed help. They look forward to our decorations every year and were worried lol.
“I carved castle walls out of foam insulation panels”
Super lightweight and easy to carve and paint. I painted everything with a dark grey and then drybrushed and shaded everything to give it more dimension.

My mom finished my yarn lion mane at 2 a.m., grumbling at a tissue-paper pattern the whole time. The dragon’s owner told her he had glued on scales until 3 a.m. They agreed Halloween is mostly a contest of who stays up later.
“My cat is very fond of this skeleton I brought home.”
The chair the skeleton sits in was her preferred chair to lay on (even though there are five other identical ones right there). Makes me think that she just simply doesn’t care if a skeleton is sitting there because that’s HER chair 😅
“(OC) My dad’s neighbor has been changing the Halloween decorations everyday.”
He lives in a quiet town not far from Atlanta, his neighbor seems to love Halloween and has been changing the decorations daily and we love it!
After day 5, a lot of other neighbors joined in to put up their decorations too!
My dad is retired and have not much to do at home, so he always looks forward to see a new decoration everyday.
“My neighbor is the master of Halloween. 350 [hot dogs], chili, cheese, hot cocoa and more!”
I don’t know how many came through, we bought 150 fruit roll ups and we ran out after an hour and he went for 2 more hours with candy and hot dogs.
“Finished the yard tonight!”
As soon as we started decorating, we had so many people coming over to look. It was amazing. There’s a school bus in our neighborhood that drives past our home and they started stopping in front of our house to let the kids look at the decorations 😊
“The neighbor’s Halloween decoration for this year. We are go for spooky!”
I was walking down the sidewalk and was just caught by surprise
I love space stuff so I couldn’t help but take a picture!

On our street, the dragon came back four years in a row, a little more patched each time, with duct tape where the rain got in. Nobody minded. The kids who grew up visiting it still talk about the tape like it was part of the design.
“My skeleton’s legs broke off so I had to improv.”
To be honest I was already planning on this portal display... but as I sat pondering the best spot to slice my skeleton in half, his leg just straight up fell off.
“Last Halloween, I accidentally left a skull decoration in my garden. Since then, my neighbor has been dressing it up for each holiday.”
I hate to be a “downer”, but I’m actually moving in two weeks. So I’ll have to carry on the tradition without my neighbor’s help.
“Last year’s idea became this year’s reality”
Monster House v2.0: Last year’s foam board version was ripped down by the wind in a matter of hours. This year it’s plywood, [spray paint], and a whole lot of L-brackets, so hopefully it’s staying put through Halloween 👻
“My dad helped me build a haunted swamp house for our Halloween party last year. Turned out better than expected! Built mostly from old pallets and recycled stuff I already had sitting in my garage.”
I told him I wanted it to look like a child’s terrible drawing of a house lol. Then he pulled out the level 🤣 He is a retired carpenter and cabinet maker so getting him to make it crooked was difficult lol
Some neighbours are annoyed that they now have to buy 3X as much candy lol
I let my dad read everyone’s comments on here and he was just tickled pink with all the love lol He said if anyone wants to copy his design, you are more than welcome to! So I’m very lucky to have him. ❤️
The swamp house in the last story took a 70-year-old carpenter, his kid and one level he refused to put away. A yard like that stands for a few weeks. The kids who run to it grow up and build their own.
Was there a house on your street that everyone visited first on Halloween? Tell us in the comments.
