19 Windowsills That Became Something — a Greenhouse, a Cat’s Kingdom, or Just the Best Seat in the House

Every home has a narrow strip of space between the window and the room that most people treat as a shelf for things that don’t have anywhere else to go. The people in this collection treated it differently. One turned it into a cat lounge that became a neighborhood institution. One put a mattress on it and calls it the best sleeping spot in the apartment. One grew a greenhouse there with heating cables under the soil.
These 19 windowsill photos and stories about happiness, pets, hobby, and the small personal spaces that become someone’s favorite show that the best room in any home is sometimes only thirty centimeters wide.

What windowsill would be complete without its main fluffy “plant”? This little queen even has her own bed there, with a view in all 3 directions.

A cozy windowsill where you can curl up with a book. It’s especially nice when rain patters soothingly against the window or snow is falling outside.

My kitchen windowsill. And I recently found this snail-shaped planter at my mom’s. She said she bought it about 28 years ago, and only now has it begun its second life.

When a dream came true, but some details didn’t match:

  • We were redoing our bedroom. For ages, I’d dreamed of a wide oak window seat where I could curl up with a book and a blanket. While I was at work, my husband offered to finish everything.
That evening, I walked into the room, and my husband proudly pulled back the curtains. Instead of a cozy nook, there was a full-blown garden of cherry tomatoes and strawberries under grow lights!
His eyes shining, he announced, “You’re the one who said you weren’t getting enough vitamins!” To be fair, he did leave me half the space, so now I sit there with my book, surrounded by tiny garden beds.
Bright Side

I added a little pillow to the windowsill so she can watch the sunrise and birds in comfort.

A cozy workspace for getting things done, enjoying coffee, and people-watching.

I saw an interesting idea featuring painted windowsills and decided to bring it to life in my own home.

I had an inspiration photo where the interior window sill was painted red. We don’t have that color in our color palette. We decided to try this marigold color as an accent.
Most of our colors are blues and greens and browns. We are also planning to paint the wall that the front door is on a darker teal color. I like the idea of the painted windowsills, I’m just not sure about this color. We just painted the one to live with it for a bit.

I transformed my windowsill into a reading nook, and now I’m thinking about making a little house for my bulldog on the other windowsill.

I turned a tiny, useless windowsill into a very practical table.

I had an “unusable” corner in my apartment by the window. Unusable because the radiator and its pipe were right there. There was no room for a desk, cabinet, or wardrobe.
So I decided to make a windowsill desk. I’m no professional carpenter, so I improvised. And honestly, I’m not much of a builder either, but I made it for myself and I’m quite happy with the result.

Plants in beautiful pots and sunlight make a windowsill so lively.

The renovation that took an unexpected turn

  • When we moved in, we ordered a gorgeous glossy windowsill, and I babied it, making sure it never got a single scratch, with nothing on it but an expensive vase in the center.
I went to my mom’s for the weekend, and my husband stayed home with the cat. When I got back, I walked into the living room and froze. There was no trace left of my stylish arrangement.
A soft heated cat bed was bolted to the windowsill, a little water fountain stood next to it, and the cat was lounging there like a king, watching the birds! My husband just shrugged. “Milo was freezing on the floor, so I had to build him his own little spa.”
I didn’t even get upset. The cat looked way too happy.
Bright Side

I created a little green nook right at work. When I look at this small jungle, I enjoy my work even more.

I decorate my windowsill and the area around it differently, depending on the season. This is what it looks like in summer.

And this is what it’s like in winter.

A mistake that worked out for the best.

  • We were renovating the kitchen. There’s a windowsill behind my kitchen sink, and I wanted to decorate it with white mosaic tile. While I was at work, the tile installer was supposed to finish everything. I came home in the evening, excited to see how beautiful it would look.
The moment I stepped into the kitchen, I was stunned: my tile was on the windowsill, but the grout was completely different! Instead of black, it was white with sparkles. I gave the worker a puzzled look, and it turned out he had mixed it up with the grout that was meant for the bathroom.
But after a week, I got used to it and am actually very happy with the mistake — it’s easier to take care of. The other one was matte, while this one is glossy. I put my plants there and enjoy the result.
Bright Side

Once, this window frame was painted white, but after moving into this house, I decided to strip it off and just love the beautiful color of the natural wood.

If live flowers never seem to survive at your place either, you can decorate your windowsill with dried flowers. Those are guaranteed to make it.

I wanted to refresh the windowsill. I hesitated for a long time, thinking the kitchen would become too dark. But it turned out even better than I imagined.

Not a windowsill, but a real blooming garden.

Even a tiny laundry room windowsill can feel cozier when styled thoughtfully with a few plants.

The best spot in any home doesn’t need to be large, designed, or expensive. It needs to be claimed. If yours has been claimed — by you, by a cat, or by a child who draws faces on the glass every morning — the comments are open.
