20 Airport and Train Station Stories That Prove the Waiting Area Is Where the Real Journey Begins

Airports and train stations are designed to be temporary. You’re not supposed to stay — you’re supposed to pass through, get on something, go somewhere. But apparently what actually happens in transit is something else: a stranger pays for your sandwich, a grandfather discovers selfies, a man says the thing he’s been waiting to say.
These 20 airport and train station stories about travel remind us that the journey always starts before you board.
- My husband and I were flying off on vacation, and we were seated at opposite ends of the plane. I asked the person next to me if he’d switch seats with my husband. The man looked me up and down and said, “For a certain fee — no problem!” I was speechless! I asked, “How much do you want?” And he said, completely seriously, “If you get me a chocolate bar from the menu!” We laughed, I promised to buy him chocolate after takeoff, and my husband and I enjoyed a comfortable flight together.
- I’m standing at passport control at the Istanbul airport and realize I’ve lost my residence permit card — the one I had just been holding. I start looking for it on the floor and ask the people in line if they’ve seen the card. Even the control officer steps out of the booth and starts looking. A few seconds later, I find the card and happily shout that I found it, then quietly add to my husband, “Can you believe it? It got stuck between my bag and my stomach.”
You wait all year for vacation, book a plane ticket, and choose a window seat. And then fate throws you a surprise.
My sister was flying for the first time, so she specifically asked for a window seat. It seemed like that would make her first flight even more exciting. “A gorgeous view,” they said...
- I’m standing at airport check-in when suddenly I can’t find my cardholder with my residence permit and credit cards. I search through my new bag, then hand it to my husband — nothing. We go home, I check the bag and suitcase again, but the cards are nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, the flight takes off. Once I’m home, I calm down, pick up the bag one more time, and discover a hidden pocket. Of course, that’s exactly where I had put all the cards.
- I arrived with my family at a warm, sunny destination, but my suitcase didn’t. At the baggage services desk, they said it would arrive on the next flight, but the next day they asked me to come to the airport. My wife, daughter, and I went there, and I was met by police officers. They wanted to know about the 6 jars of powder in my luggage. I was so glad my wife and daughter had come with me: the jars held formula for our baby. I explained it to the officers, they smiled, and handed me my suitcase.
- Completely forgot I had checked in a suitcase for my flight to Greece, landed and walked straight out of the airport onto the coach to my accommodation without even thinking about it. Didn’t realize I had left my suitcase at the airport until I stepped off the bus at the last stop and my heart dropped. Also just so happens that I had gotten the last bus of the day from the airport! One very expensive taxi ride and 3 hours later I have my suitcase in hand.
Coming back from the country side sometimes looks like this.
- One time, I set off the machine somehow (no idea how). I’m a woman, and it was a woman doing the pat-down. She gets to the part where she slides her hands into the waistband of my trousers. Then she says, “You have some of the prettiest eyes I’ve ever seen!” (long pause) “This probably isn’t a very good time to tell you that.” We had a good laugh and I thanked her for the compliment.
- I was 20 years old, but I’m only about 5 feet tall. I was heading home with my favorite cartoon backpack and my favorite stuffed animal. At security, an employee stopped me and said I needed to go through with my parents or another adult. I replied, “Uh, I’m 20!” The look on her face instantly made it clear just how awkward the moment was.
In moments like these, it’s important to take a photo, or no one will believe it.
I happened to fly between 2 cities as the only passenger on board. The flight wasn’t a regular one: the plane was heading to another city for scheduled maintenance, and tickets only went on sale the evening before. As it turned out, no one but me needed to fly that route that day. Or maybe no one simply knew about it.
- A lady bought my breakfast in LAX. All I did was ask the price of a sandwich. Never got to thank her.
- My partner and I had been dating for about 6 weeks when I left for a vacation that had been planned since long before we met. They escorted me all the way to the gate and when it was time to board, they told me not to meet anyone new on my trip because I had someone at home who loved me. It was the first time one of us had said “I love you” (and I didn’t even say it back, because it took me by surprise). We’ve been married more than 30 years now.
- My mother-in-law and I are going through security at the airport. Suddenly, they started examining her bag. The staff member says, “Is there any kind of long, narrow object inside?” My mother-in-law calmly says no! In the end, the officer opens the bag, and there’s some huge metal rod in there. I look closer, and it’s a shoehorn! I ask why she even brought it on vacation. My mother-in-law looked at me like I knew absolutely nothing about travel and said, “How else am I supposed to put on my shoes with my bad back?” Even the officer laughed.
When your child gets to sit in the cockpit, but you’re the one who’s really happy.
Flew on LH 789 FRA to AUS the other day. Most enjoyable flight. The ending was a cherry on top, thank you to the crew, you guys are awesome!
- I got to the airport, went through security, and sat down near the gate. Across from me was a sweet older gentleman who couldn’t figure out his phone. He kept trying to take a picture of the airplane outside the window, but every time he accidentally turned on the front-facing camera and ended up with a selfie. I offered to help. We took a picture of the airplane, and then he asked me to take one of him by the window — for his granddaughter. 10 minutes later, he came back over and asked me to read what his granddaughter had replied. I took the phone, looked at the message, and it said: “Grandpa, you look awesome!” Oh, how he beamed when I read those words out loud.
- One time, our suitcase accidentally ended up on a flight to another city. We went to the service desk, and I said, “It was burgundy.” The employee looked at me, then pulled out an entire color palette and said, “Please show me exactly what it looked like.” That was the moment I realized just how vague the word “burgundy” can sound.
- Once, I was flying with a friend. We were standing there, waiting for our suitcases. I had already picked up mine, and then hers came down the belt — missing a wheel and all banged up. And we had checked it in as a nice, neat suitcase. Naturally, my friend got upset, her eyes welling up. So we went to find out where we could file a claim. We got to the airline counter, looked at the tag, and noticed the last name wasn’t hers! Turns out, someone else had the exact same suitcase. And when she was buying it, they had assured her it was exclusive.
When you’re flying together on that long-awaited vacation, but somehow he’s still at fault for something.
At the airport, her phone ran out of battery faster than mine. So, she said, “You just have nothing to talk to me about.”
- I was in the capital on a business trip. At the airport, my director and I saw passengers from the train rushing toward the turnstiles. We looked at each other and started laughing, like, wow, what a crazy pace this city has. A few days later, we were the ones running late for our flight back, sprinting through the airport and weaving around people and suitcases. The capital sure changes people fast...
- I came to the airport to pick up my husband and decided to make a nice sign with his last name on it, like the ones taxi drivers use. While I was waiting, several other people with similar signs lined up next to me. At one point, a man I didn’t know walked confidently up to me and said, “Hello, that’s me.” I got flustered and replied that I was actually waiting for my husband. He looked at the sign, then at me, and said he had the exact same last name. A minute later, my husband showed up. And then the stranger said to him, “Well, I almost left instead of you.” We all ended up laughing, but I don’t think I want to pick up my husband that way again.
