9 Backyard Animal Rescues: an Owl Found Lying in the Yard and a Pool Ramp for 7 Ducklings

Every summer my grandmother carried the same box turtle across the road by her garden, sometimes three times in one week, always in the direction it was already walking. She insisted she wasn’t rescuing anyone, just giving a neighbor a ride. These 9 animal rescue stories started in ordinary backyards, and most of the rescuers say the same thing she did.
A Little Bunny Fell Into an Egress Window Well After a Windstorm Shifted the Cover by 6 Inches
A hard windstorm a couple of weeks earlier had shifted the clear plastic cover over this family’s egress window well by about six inches, just enough for a little bunny to fall through. They got it out with a humane trap and let it go. It hopped off toward the little patch of woods nearby, really picking up speed, by the poster’s account, as it got close.
“Little bunny caught in an egress window well”
A Rare Migratory Bat Turned Up in a Bathroom Sink, and a Shoebox Became Its Hotel Until Rescuers Arrived
“Went to clean the bathroom mid-morning, found a rare, internationally migratory athlete in my sink plughole. (Northumberland)”
Imagine heading into the bathroom mid-morning for a standard tidy-up. Instead, staring back at me from the actual plughole is a tiny, furry, disapproving face.
Cue a completely rational, dignified scream.
My son immediately came to my rescue, bravely assessed the situation, and handled calling in the absolute heroes at local Bat Rescue. Turns out, the tiny bat had cruised through an open window looking for a dark, cool “cave” to sleep off the night, and decided my plumbing fit the bill.
While waiting for the experts, we channeled our inner structural engineers and constructed a five-star temporary luxury eco-roost out of an empty shoebox, secured with blue nitrile gloves.
The rescue volunteer arrived and used the ultimate piece of high-tech scientific equipment to assess her: my kitchen scales.
She clocked in at a hefty 8g.
FINAL UPDATE: SUCCESS! She has officially flown home!
The Bat Rescue volunteer picked her up this morning and she spent the day at “bat rehab,” living the absolute high life. She gorged herself on high-protein mealworms all day to get her strength back.
The volunteer brought her back to our garden just now for dusk (around 9:00 PM). This was actually the volunteer’s very first official release!
We set her up, and this time, she didn’t hesitate. She took one look at the Northumberland night sky.
The bathroom sink is officially safe again!
A Baby Possum Alone in the Backyard Went to a Rehabber, and the Center Explained Why Leaving It Wasn’t an Option
“Found a baby possum in the backyard, she’s going to a wildlife rehabilitator first thing in the morning.”
She’s model material but her heart’s just not in it.
Not sure if anyone will see this, but the wildlife center I took this baby to confirmed exactly what I already knew. This baby was thin and dehydrated and they said it has probably been away from Mom for quite some time. It’s entirely too small to live on its own.
For all the people wondering why I didn’t just leave it, opossum mothers do not come back for their young. If I had left it alone, it likely would have passed away in my yard.
From the author:
The turtle had a schedule. It came out in the morning, usually headed for the creek, and my grandmother would set down the hose, pick it up by the sides of the shell and carry it across in the same direction it was already going. She told me you never turn a turtle around. It knows where it’s going better than you do.
An Owl Was Found Lying in a Backyard One Morning, and the Wildlife Vet Had Good News
“Found an owl lying in my backyard this morning (don’t worry I took him to a wildlife rescue center).”
I’ve been trying to respond to everyone asking for an update. I took this picture before taking her to the Austin Wildlife Rescue and was told by the vet working there that she probably hit her head really hard and has a concussion. She told me that the owl will make a full recovery and will be released as soon as she regains full consciousness.
Just a girl helping out animals when I can.
Owls have talons and sharp beaks and can do a lot of damage to you so take care, I found a juvenile once confused by headlights at night, I wrapped it in my coat and set it free I some woods, it flew straight up into a tree.
Seven Ducklings Got Trapped in a Backyard Pool, So a Family Built a Ramp While Mama Duck Stood Guard
Seven ducklings got trapped in this family’s pool, so they built a ramp to get them out and back to their mother. Mama duck stood guard for a good hour and kept flying around to intimidate anyone who got too close to her babies. The ducklings were understandably terrified, so it took a lot of corralling and encouragement before they made it up the ramp.
“7 ducklings got trapped in our pool so we created a ramp to reunite them with mama duck.”
An Opossum Stuck in a Neighbor’s Window Well Was Lured Out With Banana and Maple Syrup
The neighbors were about to call an exterminator for the opossum stuck in their window well, so the poster stepped in first. A humane trap baited with banana and maple syrup did the trick, and the opossum moved one yard over, into the poster’s own backyard, where he has been told he is welcome to stay and eat the ticks.
“Rescuing an opossum trapped in a neighbor’s window well”
I’ve just taken a screenshot of that to send on Messenger to my Australian friend. He’s very much into wildlife and I think he’ll love to read about a wildlife rescue like that.
Strange Noises Came From the Chimney All Morning, and Inside the Log Burner Was a Little Owl
Odd noises had been coming from the chimney all morning, so the family decided to take the log burner apart. Inside, they found a little owl. They kept it indoors until it began to show signs of recovery, then carried it out to the garden, and it flew off.
“No bird dreams of being stuck in a chimney.”
From the author:
My grandmother never named the turtle. She said naming something wild is the first step toward thinking it’s yours. The gray cat on her porch swing got a name, the foreman, only after three nights in a row, which was her rule for anything that showed up and stayed. The turtle never stayed. It just kept coming back.
A Driver Turned Around for What Looked Like a Rock on the Yellow Lines, and It Was a Baby Owl
“I rescued a baby owl that was sitting in the the middle of a road on the yellow lines. It was beautiful & so calm.”
I thought it was a rock at first, then quickly realized it was a small bird. I turned my car around and pulled off the road, then went and picked the owl up off the yellow lines. Thankfully, it seemed ok. It easily flew up to a safe vantage point, watched me for a bit, then flew off into the night.
Happy ending as far as I know. Wildlife Rescue was contacted. They advised that if an obvious injury was present and that it hadn’t moved that a capture/transport would be needed. Thankfully, it ended up easily flying away.
A Box Turtle Released in a Backyard 9 Years Ago Pops Up Again Every Spring, and His Name Is Gustav
“My dad found this box turtle nine years ago and let it loose in his yard. He pops up again every year in the spring. Fresh from hibernation, here’s Gustav, the resident backyard box turtle.”
He’s a grump. I think it comes from him being “wild” and living outdoors. I’m sure he had other plans for the afternoon, but he wound up being gawked at on a pool deck lol
My wife loves to go looking for him when we visit my parents. Gustav brings people together lol.
Gustav has been turning up in the same yard every spring for nine years, grumpy and fresh from hibernation, and nobody has ever tried to keep him. A backyard, it turns out, is also somebody else’s home.
