19 Flea Market and Thrift Store Stories That Teach Us Every Old Object Is Waiting for Someone Who Will Love It Again

In eight years as a second wedding photographer, I could find the bride’s father in any crowd by looking for her smile on a man in a gray suit. My boss said the real resemblance shows up about 30 seconds after the posed photo, when nobody is trying. These 9 famous dads and their kids were photographed at about the same age, and you can see it without trying.
John Lennon was 23 when Dutch press photographers caught him at a Beatles TV taping on June 5, 1964. His elder son, Julian, was 22 in this December 1985, press photo, a year after his debut album gave him two Top 10 hits in the U.S.
In 1984, Rolling Stone wrote about “the sharp profile and almond eyes he inherited from John Lennon.” Julian admitted: “It drives me mad thinking about it.”
Mick Jagger was 21 when the Rolling Stones played Statesboro, Georgia, on May 4, 1965. His daughter with Jerry Hall, Georgia May Jagger, signed with a modeling agency at 16 and was 20 in this November 2012 photo in Sydney.
She told Interview magazine in 2009: “We have a snap of my dad wearing blue eye shadow, which I would always make fun of.”
David Bowie was 40 on his Glass Spider tour in June 1987. His son, Duncan Jones, born in 1971, was 39 at the premiere of his second film, Source Code, in March 2011. His first, Moon, had won him a BAFTA award for best debut.
Jones told the Associated Press in 2016 about where his love of film began: “My main hobby with my dad was shooting little one-stop animations and I just always carried that interest in film.”
George Harrison was 31 in December 1974, on his first North American tour since the Beatles. His only son, Dhani, born in 1978, was 32 when he performed in Seattle in November 2010.
A year earlier, NPR wrote: “He looks exactly like his father around 1967: the hollow cheeks, wisps of facial hair, the deep brown eyes.” In 2025, Dhani became a father himself.
James Caan was 32 in this 1972 photo, the year The Godfather made him famous as Sonny Corleone. His son Scott was 30 in May 2007; three years later he became Danny “Danno” Williams on CBS’s Hawaii Five-0.
In 2012, father and son acted together in an episode of the show, with James as a retired cop. Scott also writes and directs; his first film as a director, Dallas 362, came out in 2003.
Bob Marley was 31 in this 1976 photo, the year he broke through in the U.S. His eldest son, Ziggy, born in 1968, was about 28 when he was photographed in Baltimore in 1997.
Ziggy has won eight Grammys, and he produced Bob Marley: One Love, the 2024 film about his father. Its companion album won the Grammy for best reggae album in 2025.
Nat King Cole was 40 in this October 1959 photo. His daughter Natalie, born in 1950, became a star in the 1970s, and in 1991 she recorded Unforgettable as a duet with her father, singing alongside his original 1951 recording.
The song won the Grammy for record of the year in 1992. That August, Natalie was 42, at the Emmys, where Alan Light took this photo.
Sean Connery was 53 when he arrived at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on Nov. 23, 1983, the year of his last James Bond film. His only child, Jason, born in 1963, was 52 in this June 2015 photo.
Jason played Robin Hood in the 1980s TV series Robin of Sherwood and later moved behind the camera as a director. His film Tommy’s Honour (2016) tells the story of a famous father and son, the Scottish golfers Old Tom and Young Tom Morris.
Lloyd Bridges starred as diver Mike Nelson in Sea Hunt (1958–61), and his sons Beau and Jeff sometimes appeared in episodes as kids. Alan Light photographed him at the Oscars Governor’s Ball on March 29, 1989, at 76.
Jeff Bridges, who won the Oscar for best actor for Crazy Heart, was 75 at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2025. Like his father, he never stopped working: from 2022 to 2024 he led the TV series The Old Man.
Lloyd Bridges was 76 and Jeff was 75 in these photos, and neither one had stopped working. That’s what I learned behind the camera: you don’t need the posed shot. Give it 30 seconds, and the family shows up on its own.
