While small families have become the norm, Karen and Deon Derrico stand out with their remarkable brood of 14 children. They have surpassed expectations and shattered conventional limits, embracing the joys of a bustling household. Recently, she got candid about all the challenges and has something to say to all the people who didn’t quite accept her decision.
Karen, 43, and Deon, 52, Derrico have 14 children.
Meet Karen and Deon Derrico, an exceptional couple who have been blessed with four sets of naturally-conceived multiples—quintuplets, two sets of twins, and triplets. Additionally, they have two non-multiple children born consecutively. Their extraordinary family life is captured in the TLC series called Doubling Down with the Derricos.
The mother of 14 has recently shared her openness to expanding her family, despite facing criticism from online trolls. Karen and Deon Derrico, who have experienced multiple births, are planning to welcome more children as they come.
Every sibling has 13 other siblings.
Their journey took an even more eventful turn when they welcomed their eldest, Darian, now 17, followed by Derrick, 12, and then the arrival of twins Dallas and Denver, now 11. However, the chaos reached another level when Karen discovered she was expecting quintuplets. Deniko, Dariz, Deonee, Daiten, and Daician, now 9, added an extra dose of excitement to their family. Tragically, their joy was marred when Karen gave birth to triplets—Diez, Dior, and Carter, now 6—yet Carter passed away just two hours after being born.
In a candid interview, Karen, who has experienced miscarriages and never undergone IVF, revealed that their “baby factory” remains open. She expressed that ever since she and Deon began their relationship in 2001, she made a personal commitment to have as many children as they were fortunate enough to welcome into their lives—a promise she remains resolute in fulfilling.
The happy family also received criticism.
Despite the contentment and well-being of both parents and their extensive family, they continue to endure criticism from detractors who argue that individual attention is lacking, and their household is excessively chaotic. Undeterred by these remarks, Karen has responded to the trolls while expressing her intentions to further expand their family.
Karen has responded to trolls who claim she can’t love all her children, that her house is always messy, and that having a large family is overwhelming. She asserts that she and her husband work from home, allowing them to homeschool their kids and support their passions.
Karen also refutes concerns about the toll of pregnancies, stating she had healthy experiences. Addressing stereotypes about black families, she emphasizes that her own family proves them wrong. In terms of finances, they spend around $3,500 monthly on groceries.
In the face of criticism and challenges, parents with large families like Karen demonstrate unwavering dedication to their children. They prioritize individual love and support, address misconceptions about their ability to manage a household, and strive to create nurturing and organized environments. These parents reject stereotypes and work tirelessly to provide their children with the care and opportunities they deserve.
