Daryl Holmes might be 72 years old, but he’s still full of life. After realizing he had too much free time in retirement, he chose to pursue a career as a McDonald’s employee. He’s now a local icon and wants to inspire other people.

It has been 6 years since Daryl Holmes, 72, started working at the Newcastle McDonald’s. His job consists of greeting and helping customers using the self-service counter. And he’s been doing a great job at it.

“Daryl comes in, makes sure everything is fine, checks on you, asks how your day has been — they love him.” said Cruise Monaghan, McDonald’s operations consultant.

Being one of the oldest Australian McDonald’s employees, he wants to inspire the younger generation.
“I’m just like their grandfather,” he explained. “I just talk about the importance of enjoying what you do, learning from it, and making sure they’ve got someone to talk to when times are tough.”

But not everyone feels the same about working. An 82-year-old Walmart worker could only retire thanks to a stranger who raised over $100K for him. He now has time to visit his daughters and grandchildren at any time and feels like his life has just begun.
