    Then just before I was about to get my train he found me on the platform and gave me some snacks and a can of Coke, and it’s just the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me.

    When we arrived he said, “I’ll wait here for 10 minutes in case you need to go somewhere else.” He waited 15. I didn’t need him, but knowing he was out there while I was inside was its own act of compassion.

    When the bus finally arrived, she got on last. She saw that she had an umbrella and someone else didn’t, so she made room. Nobody asked her to do anything.
  • I lost my wallet at a market and the person who found it mailed it back to my address. It was on my driver’s license. Everything was still inside.
    But there was also a small folded piece of paper. It said: “I saw the photo in your wallet. Beautiful family. I hope good things happen to you all soon.” The photo was of my 2 kids, my wife and me from a few years ago.
    I don’t know who wrote that note or how they knew from a photo that I might need to be told things were going to get better. But I’ve carried that piece of paper in my wallet since then.
  • I’m a retired teacher. Money is low. For my granddaughter’s 14th birthday, I knitted her a pink cardigan. Took me 6 days.
    When she opened my gift, she smirked, “Did the maid forget her sweater?” Everyone laughed. I couldn’t breathe when she took it and walked out of the room. I thought she was going to throw it away and I’d never see it again.
    She came back wearing it in like 10 mins. She walked up to her friends and said, “My grandma made this.” The friend said, “Wait, she actually made it? That’s incredible.” My granddaughter looked at her for a moment and then she looked at me and she said, “Yeah.”
    She crossed the room and hugged me and said, “I’m sorry, Gran. I’m sorry. It’s precious.” She wore it the rest of the party and when everyone left I saw her fold it carefully and set it on top of her pile. I was so confused.
    Turns out, my DIL confronted her away from everyone and told her it was a gift from me. The smirk happened. The laugh happened. And then my granddaughter realized it was a mistake and apologized.
    That’s the part I hold onto. A 14-year-old who had enough self-worth to recognize she’d done something small and cruel, and enough wisdom to go fix it. Safe to say, my DIL is doing a good job parenting. :)
