So the teacher lied, threatened the kids into covering for her, and the parents are calling this a friendship story? Good lord parents are so weak nowadays. I would get her fired on the spot
10 Back-to-School Moments Teaching Us Kindness and Life Skills Still Guide Everyone to Happiness in 2026-2027

Life skills for the 2026-2027 school year don’t always show up in a syllabus. Most of the time, they show up at a lunch table, on a school bus, in a hand-me-down set of clothing passed to a kid who needs it, or in a note passed between kids who barely know each other yet, sometimes turning into a friendship nobody saw coming. As classrooms fill back up this fall 2026, it’s worth remembering that the most important lessons of the year, the ones about life skills, parenting, and friendship, rarely get graded. They get modeled, kid to kid, teacher to student, parent to parent, sometimes as small as a borrowed jacket or a bag of outgrown clothing, one small act of kindness and compassion at a time. Here are 10 real back-to-school moments where kindness walked in right alongside the backpacks and changed everything.
My son came home with a black eye and a note that said “He fell.” I know my kid. He doesn’t fall so it was a lie. Went to the school the next morning; the principal shrugged and said, “boys will be boys.” Pulled him out that same day. 3 weeks later a kid from his class called and said, “I saw what happened. The teacher saw everything and told us to say he fell or we’d get detention. Your son didn’t fall.” He told me my son got hit in the face with a basketball at recess, some kid threw a hard pass without looking, ball caught him square in the eye. Didn’t even cry, just got back up and kept playing. Turns out the teacher hadn’t cleared basketball that day, some equipment rule she’d bent, and she panicked about getting written up for it. Told the kids to just say he fell.
I called her directly, not the school, just her. She started crying on the phone almost right away, said she’d felt sick about it for weeks and didn’t know how to walk it back once she’d already said it. Asked if she could come apologize in person. Sat on my porch steps for like an hour explaining the whole thing.
My son forgave her way faster than I did, honestly (that’s a life skill, I believe). Told him afterward grown-ups get scared and mess up too, same as kids, and the real hero of this whole story was some kid who spent 3 weeks working up the nerve to fix a lie he didn’t even tell. He’s back at that school now. Still plays ball at recess. Teacher signs off on it every single time now, no exceptions. I think they might have built some kind of friendship as well.
I so much agree Emma. Not everyone should be a teacher
Not ture this
Teachers are under so much pressure. She got scared but the kids had fun
If you feel you have to judge then judge the boy who threw the ball. Crazy isn't it.. how fast we make judgement. She made a big mistake . But she faced the mother and explained the whole situation it's not up to us it's up to the mother and her son
I agree. I would go straight to the school principal

Karen, I get why you’re upset. She messed up badly (REALLY BADLY), but owning it and apologizing counts for something too, no? Would you still want her fired after she came to the parent’s porch herself to explain?
Wonder if you’d feel that way if it was your kid the teacher lied about
UNTIL SHE DOES IT AGAIN? HELL NO. THIS WOMAN DOES NOT HAVE THE REQUISITE "COMMON SENSE" FOR BEING A TEACHER. YOU DO NOT "TEACH" CHILDREN TO LIE TO OTHERS. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO "COVER" YOUR OWN SKIN.
You have to remember the only reason she came to the porch and apologizing all is because someone spoke another kid if not nothing would have gotten done I don't think on her own she would have went to the kids parents and said anything and maybe would have gotten away with it
Yes i would still br upset with her for telling my child that just to cover her own skin. no she needs fired for threatening that child or any children that's not how us teachers are supposed to behave even if she did appolagize she needs to own up to her consequences and except that without argument at all so she messed up to the lie but did she admit threatening them idk she judged up own it you do the cri e you do the time to me that was a crime
I would still want that not gonna lie
well said bright side
I would tell her the one's she needs to apologize to are her son and her students for putting them in such an awkward situation that they may have to lie! We teach children it's not okay to lie and we are supposed to be role models and then we threaten them and tell them to lie for us so we don't get in trouble?! That's not okay either!! It's actually worse and we're showing children that it's okay for adults to lie if it benefits them but it's not okay for kids to lie because it's the wrong thing to do, really??!! It confuses their little minds but it also confuses me as well! It's not okay to do but the apology needs to go to the kids and then she needs to face the music and then tell the principal herself. If she needs policing because she doesn't do the honorable things, then and only then, report her, if that's what your son wants to do and you can agree on it together. You have to remember, he's the one going to school, you've already been through school, he needs guidance but he needs to find his own way. Children need to feel like they have some kind of control in their lives and some independence and that's important for them to grow and mature and they will learn from your guidance as long as you don't act like their teacher did. Be honest with them because they are smart little munchkins, much more so than given credit for.
Hey Emma! Thanks for reading the article! I like your perspective, but I like it even more that both sides chose to treat the whole situation with kindness and grace. What do you think?
You must be the father because I don’t know any man who would be so forgiving of something like this.
oh no, Maria, I'm not haha! I'm not married yet. I honestly don't know what I would do as a father
LOOK, ALL THE "KINDNESS AND GRACE" IN THE WORLD, WON'T CHANGE WHAT THIS "TEACHER" DID. SHE LIED, SHE TOLD THE KIDS TO LIE, TO THEIR PARENTS. NOTHING ELSE NEEDS TO BE SAID. SHE SCREWED UP, WAY TOO MUCH TO LET "KINDNESS AND GRACE" MAKE IT OK.
Cheryl, hi! Me again ahahaha. I think she absolutely crossed a line, especially dragging the other kids into the lie. I’m glad she owned up to it, but yes, there needed to be consequences and some serious retraining too. I can’t believe we actually agree on this
SEE, MIRACLES "DO" HAPPEN 😂!
Totally!!!!
i mean they sound so cute hahha
THE KIDS? SURE. THAT TEACHER? HARD NO. SHE NEEDS TO GO BACK TO "SCHOOL", AND LEARN HOW TO "NOT TELL KIDS TO LIE, EVER"!
Have you ever made a mistake, now don't lie and bring us in on it! 😅! Just kidding but, yes what she did was wrong, seriously wrong, but enough to be fired over?! I don't really think so. And remember, I'm a child advocate and have been most of my life. What bothers me most is that she threatened them and then told them to lie for her and none of that is okay but it's an offence to fire over but she definitely needs serious penalties placed against her with at least a suspension and probation and apologizes to the children and their parents, the young boy that was injured and his mother and the principal and the entire school and it needs to be done publicly to really drive it home! I think that would be great punishment and I don't even think that she would return after having to go through those things but they could make it mandatory through the courts if she follow their protocols but that would be between the school and the parents. No one is saying that Grace and Kindness are making these things okay at all!! They are not okay!!
You seem like fun🤦🏼♂️
A real witch burner here. Quite a few if you can stand to look..
totally understandable
We all make mistakes, it is a pity that the boy had to suffer...but they all learnt something
Agree
Thats really sweet of you.
I will suggest you to get his eye checkup done because that hit cause much more damage then we think.
Reading the comments. Mostly judgmental and unforgiving beyond belief. I can’t imagine what tiny box worlds of perfection you live in. I’d march a long way to avoid them. God help that teacher if she had a sliver of Asian features. Men incapable of forgiveness?! Not that I have seen. And the vengefulness of some. A sick society alright.
Things that didn't happen!
Let's not forget that the child himself didn't tell the mom what really happened. Even after being removed from the school.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
At least she fixed it in the end.
Amd not worth ruining her career about.
They all learnt honesty is the best policy.
Good on your son for forgiving her.
None of us are perfect.
EXCUSE YOU? A TEACHER LYING TO THE PRINCIPAL, THE PARENT AND TELLING THE KIDS TO LIE, TOO? OH HELL YES THAT IS REASON FOR DISMISSAL. WHAT ELSE HAS, OR WILL, SHE LIE ABOUT? DO YOU WANT YOUR KID TO HAVE A LIAR FOR A TEACHER? SHE SHOULD HAVE "LEARNED" HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY, WAY BEFORE SHE BECAME A TEACHER.
Another witch burner.
ME? OR YOU?
NAH, I WILL SEND MY WITCH TO YOU, SHE DOESN'T BURN, SHE FUMES.
I think that she will become the best teacher ever...she knows how blessed she is as her whole life could have been ruined because of one mistake...
Preposterous! The teacher lying about his/her son falling like that? If I were the principal, I would be likely to fire that teacher.
I pray that you never had to lie to try and save yourself...
I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE ASKING, BUT NOT REALLY THE POINT, IN THIS PARTICULAR STORY. THAT CAN BE HER "NEXT" WORRY 🤔
That was brave and good thing that kid did and as far as that terrible teacher goes she needs to be let go and hopefully that ki was a role models for other kids she also told to lie no teacher should be threatening a child like that to make and tell a lie im appalled that she asa teacher would do that im a teacher myself of prek to kindergarten and so times sub in for 1st grade also I honestly could never aythat to any child I never even told my own 7 kids not to lie thsts wrong and if anyone no matter who asked them to tell a lie then they needed to come directly to me and tell me because lying was very wrong and comes with serious consequences. Telling the truth is just way easier and most proper thing to do
yes, the lie definitely ate that kid
I hope you don't teach English!
YOU KNOW THAT MANY OF US TALK TO TEXT. MY PHONE NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, GETS MY WORDS CORRECT. SOME OF US ALSO HIT THE WRONG LETTER, WHEN TYPING FAST, AND DON'T ALWAYS CATCH IT DURING "SPELL CHECK". THE LETTERS ARE VERY CLOSE TOGETHER. DOESN'T MATTER THOUGH. I UNDERSTOOD THE ANIVE COMMENT COMPLETELY, MISSPELLED WORDS, AND ALL.
The text process on this site seems particularly clunky. I don’t think I’ll be back. Never liked witch hunters.
Hi Sonurva! Yes, plenty of schools have rules about which equipment can be used during recess and when. It can sound fussy, but there’s usually a safety reason behind it, I believe :) Who knows?
yes, my son's school has such funny instructions
WE NEVER HAD THOSE KIND OF "RULES". BUT I AM PRETTY OLD, SO... KIDS GET HURT AT SCHOOL, THAT IS LIFE.
THIS "WANNABE" MADE IT MUCH MORE SERIOUS, BY LYING, THEN PRESSING THE KIDS TO LIE, TOO.
Yeah
That’s a part of life. Well said
THE ONLY CONSTANT IN THE UNIVERSE, IS THAT EVERYTHING CHANGES. WHAT WE DID? I WOULDN'T LET MY KIDS DO, NOW. THERE ARE ALWAYS "ISSUES". THERE ARE ALWAYS "PARENTS", THAT MAKE IT HARDER. THERE IS ALEAYS THAT "ONE" STUDENT. BUT THEY ARE ALWAYS "DIFFERENT". GROWING UP, TODAY, IS THE SAME, BUT "DIFFERENT"!
As a former teacher, I know that things are covered up.
I wish that I came forward about many things. Regrets don't change things.
WHILE NOT AN "OFFICIAL" COMMANDMENT. THOU SHALT NOT LIE, SHOULD BE #1.
Thank you for sharing this
This is such a beautiful reminder that some of the most important lessons children learn have nothing to do with grades.
i agree Irisa
Are you for real? You are the worst advocate for your child. Not only should some people not be teachers, some people shouldn’t be parents either. What if your son had some underlying injury? You’re an ah for not reporting the teacher to the school, but for not reporting her to the police. Makes you wonder what else she’s lied about
MAYBE NOT AS VEHEMENTLY, BUT I DO AGREE SHE WAS WAAAYY TO EASY, ABOUT IT.
Harsh....in this day and age, children are bullied by other children daily and they are too scared to tell anyone as the bullies threaten them...life would be easier if those children are expelled as they have nothing to offer...teachers are the reason I am able to read, write and earn a good salary. I do not agree with what she did but I am sure she learnt a great big lesson...I thank God for teachers...where do you think the decision makers of this world come from...schools with teachers...
I think so too, Dave! Would you have done the same?
I struggle responding politely when people lie to me or can't take responsibility for thier actions.
I probably would have trusted the son.
Heaven knows I was injured alot at school. Black eyes happen.
BUT THIS ISN'T REALLY ABOUT A BLACK EYE, NOW IS IT? IT IS ABOUT AN AUTHORITY FIGURE, LYING ABOUT A KID, TO THE KID, AND TELLING THEM TO LIE TO THE PARENT. SHE THREATENED THE ORHER KIDS, TOO. NO ONE TOOK ANY REAL RESPONSIBILITY, TO MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN, TO ANOTHER KID, OR AT ANOTHER SCHOOL, WITH THIS SAME TEACHER.
NOPE. SCARED OR NOT, THAT WOMAN LIED TO YOU, HAD YOUR KID LIE TO YOU, AND THREATENED AN ENTIRE CLASS FULL OF KIDS. APOLOGY OR NOT, SHE NEEDS TO BE SUSPENDED, RETRAINED, AND PUT ON SOME KIND OF PROBATION. I HAVE A VERY DEFINITE PROBLEM WITH ANYONE WHO HURTS A KID, IN ANY WAY. THEN TRIES TO COVER IT UP.
Yes
Agree 100000000%
that's exactly the thing, she didn't want to be in trouble and threatened everyone. Only reason this got to the point was the teacher was told a kid did tell the truth.
TEACHERS ARE HELD (USUALLY) TO A HIGHER STANDARD OF BEHAVIOR, AS THEY SHOULD BE. PITY THEY DON'T PAY THEM FOR IT. THIS ONE JUST DIDN'T GET THE 'MEMO"
exactly
You are right Cheryl. And tenure makes it impossible to get bad teachers out of our school systems! Lying is a deal breaker in any relationship.
YUP. A N Y !
SHUT THE F…… UP.
How old areare you. A relationship isis not a deal.
My daughter’s allergic to basically everything (peanuts, tree nuts, the works), and every September I brace myself for the first classroom party where someone brings the wrong snack. This year her teacher sent a note home the first week, a heads-up that she’d already switched the whole class to a nut-free policy and researched safe alternatives herself.
Found out later she’d done this on her own (not because the school made her, only because she didn’t want one kid sitting out every celebration all year). Small thing. Huge thing, actually, if you’re the parent who used to pack a backup cupcake just in case.
These stories really remind us that the most impactful lessons in life never show up on a report card. That story about the teacher remembering the window seat gave me chills—it's amazing how a tiny, thoughtful gesture can stick with a kid for decades. Thanks for sharing such a heartwarming read!
My two kids fight like cats and dogs, always have, my older one especially rough on his little sister most days. First morning of the school year, her bus was running late and she was panicking about missing the first bell. He didn’t say a word, just grabbed both their bags, walked her the whole mile himself, made her late to his own first class in the process.
I only found out because his teacher emailed asking why he was 15 minutes late. He shrugged it off at dinner, said “She was freaking out, wasn’t a big deal.” The kid who normally can’t share a bag of chips with her without a fight walked a mile in the wrong direction so she wouldn’t cry at a bus stop. Still doesn’t add up to me, to be frank, but I’ll take it.
Me and my younger brother fought like hell.
But if anyone hurt him god help them. I was 7 years older and would
Protect him with my life. That's brothers and sisters for you.
Lol.

I was nine years old, waiting for the school bus in a Wisconsin winter. I had a thin coat, no hat or gloves. A woman driving past saw me and stopped, giving me a blanket from the back of her car. It was a long skinny one, so she wrapped it around my head and shoulders like a big scarf. I remember thanking her, but being confused. I told her I didn’t know how I would give it back when I was done borrowing it. She hugged me and said not to worry. I still have that blanket.
Wonderful story. Thank you.
I couldn’t make it to my daughter’s back-to-school night, working a second shift I couldn’t get out of. Felt awful about it for weeks leading up to it, imagining her being the only kid without a parent there. Her teacher, without me even asking, recorded the whole thing on her phone and sent me 15 minutes of it that night, including a bit where my daughter pointed proudly at her own drawing on the wall.
Didn’t have to do that. It clearly wasn’t in her job description. I watched that video probably ten times before I fell asleep that night. Small act of kindness on her part. Meant everything to me. Sometimes parenting seems so hard to me, but I got this!
Every year a few kids come back from summer clearly having outgrown last year’s clothes, and you can tell they know it, that kind of embarrassment kids that age can’t quite explain. Started a little clothing closet in my room years back, funded partly out of my own pocket.
This year, a boy who’d used it back in third grade came back in 7th, taller than me now, and asked if he could donate his own old clothes to it instead of taking anything for himself. Said he remembered how it helped his family out one year, figured it was his turn. Didn’t say much back to him in that moment. Couldn’t really.
When I was at school, I helped a girl out when she was having a rough moment in the bathroom, crying and clearly overwhelmed by something. A few weeks later she pretended to be my friend who had been waiting to meet me, when I was being followed home by 3 guys. We never saw each other outside of those two occasions but I still think about her and hope she’s doing ok somewhere out there.
So a boy came in during his free period looking for a very specific book (something about a kid whose parents were splitting up), though he never said that was why he wanted it. But I wasn’t born yesterday. I found something close enough, handed it over without asking questions, figured he’d tell me if he wanted to.
He came back two days later, finished, and just said, “Do you have another one like that?” We’ve had this quiet, ongoing thing since, him showing up every few weeks, me pulling books that touch on whatever he seems to be working through without either of us ever naming it directly. His mom stopped me in the hallway last month, said he’d started talking to her more since the school year started. I don’t think a library card usually does that. This year, I think it did.
I failed my driver’s ed written test twice and felt like the slowest kid in a class of freshmen who all passed first try. My teacher could’ve just let me keep failing it on my own time. Instead she started staying twenty minutes after the bell most days, no extra pay for it, just going through the same ten questions with me until they finally stuck.
Passed on attempt 3. She acted like it was no big deal, said “Everybody’s got their thing that takes longer, this was yours.” I think about that a lot now that I actually have my license. Some skill I’ll use my whole life, and I almost gave up on it out of embarrassment before someone decided 20 extra minutes a day was worth spending on me.

After the recessions and our houses foreclosure, my family and I were homeless during the summer between my fourth and fifth grade in school. When school started back up, I went to live with some family friends who clothed, fed and loved me as one of their own. Not only that, a few weeks before moving in with them, one of my moms coworkers heard about our homelessness and secretly organized a fundraiser for my parents out of the state park they were living in. Along with about 1,000 bucks, they got me a book bag filled to the brim with all the school supplies I would need for the year. Still brings me to tears thinking about.
I just graduated high school this May, and I’ll never forget it.
Pay it forward when you can!
back to school memories! I miss my school years
Comments
I still remember my first day of 7th grade. I was standing outside the classroom pretending to look busy with my backpack because I was too nervous to walk in and talk to anyone. My teacher spotted me, opened the door, and said, “You’re going to want the seat by the window. Trust me.”
I did.
That little thing stuck with me. She remembered I liked sitting by the window, remembered my name before I had even learned everyone else’s, and somehow made that first week feel less scary. By October, I was staying after class just to tell her random stories about my day.
I’m sure she forgot about that first-day conversation years ago. I never did. Funny how the smallest things can stay with you.
Teachers should always lead with kindness and grace ❤️
Tell me your favorite school memories, and I might just include them in my next article! 🥰
