I said, “The job market is bad now,” and left the room. That day I dreamed my late father came and said, “Go look at her garden before you decide anything.”

Woke up and actually went out back. I found her vegetable patch completely overgrown, untouched since her knees got bad, the same garden my father used to help her with every single weekend before he passed. I don’t know why that dream sent me there specifically. I only stood in the yard a long time before I did anything else.

Then I grabbed her gloves off the hook by the door instead of packing my bag. Spent the whole next day clearing grass without asking permission. She watched from the kitchen window before finally coming out to help, the first real conversation we’d had since the fight.

So I landed a landscaping job a month later. That’s a job I never would’ve considered before that garden. Still live in her spare room, splitting the rent now instead of just staying for free. Neither of us has brought up that morning again. Some part of me thinks my father knew exactly what that yard still needed, even years after he stopped being the one to tend it.
