The best acts of compassion usually happen at the moment when someone is least expecting them. Just a kind person who notices you’re struggling and decides to help. And sometimes that’s all it takes to turn someone’s day around.

  • So once in high school, I ate at a Mexican restaurant and unknowingly threw away my car keys on my tray when I was done eating. I went and asked a worker if he had cleared them off the table and he said no, but that he had just taken the trash out to the dumpster. I remember going outside and calling my dad to ask if there was a spare and he told me no.
    So I went back inside feeling humiliated and about to ask if I could look through the dumpster only to see that this man had already dug through the dumpster on my behalf and ended up finding my keys for me. He just went above and beyond and to this day I am so grateful for his help.
  • I ran out of petrol on my 125 not long after I started riding, didn’t realise I’d go through my reserve as fast as I did. I managed to get a few more miles down the road by laying the bike on its left side to get a few more drops into the carb, but eventually it wouldn’t work any more.
    I was about to start pushing when a guy pulled up next to me and said, “No fuel?” I said yes and he told me to wait. About ten minutes later he came back with a Jerry can of petrol and poured it in, but before I could offer him anything he said, “Happens to the best of us,” and drove off.
    I assume he was a biker too and had the same happen to him once, he saved me the trouble of pushing the bike or getting recovered. I wish I knew who he was so I could repay him.
  • My son was three and scared of the dentist. We already had one appointment where he refused to go anywhere near the chair.
    At the new practice, the dentist came in and just looked at him. Didn’t even try to get him into the chair. She sat down on the floor beside him and started talking about the cartoons on his shirt.
    She let him look inside her mouth with the little mirror, showed him the tools, and let him hold some of them. She explained everything before she did it in a baby voice and let him decide when he was ready.
    Eventually, he climbed into the chair himself and spent most of the appointment telling her what she should do next. He’s never been afraid of the dentist since.

    I went over and asked if she knew where her family was but she wouldn’t come with me. So I stayed with her and just tried to keep her calm. She kept asking if anyone from her family was coming. I told her they were looking for her and would come soon.
    About 40 minutes later, her parents found us. She immediately ran and hugged them. Her parents were crying and thanking me, but honestly, there wasn’t much to it. I just kept her company till they reunited.

  • When I was 18, my car broke down late at night on a lonely highway in NorCal. I didn’t have a cell phone at the time (I was too broke). I knew there was a grocery store a few miles up the road, and a payphone, so I started walking on the side of the road.
    A couple pulled over in their car, and begged me to get in. I was in tears, and said that I couldn’t take a ride from strangers. The lady started crying, told me that I reminded her of her daughter, and showed me her nursing ID. They told me they couldn’t just leave me on the road at night like that.
    So I accepted the ride. And was safe. Thank you, temporary surrogate parents. You might have saved my life.
  • When I was at school, I helped a girl out when she was having a meltdown in the bathroom. A few weeks later she pretended to be my friend who had been waiting to meet me, when I was being followed home by two guys. We never saw each other outside of those two occasions but I still think about her and hope she’s doing ok somewhere out there.
  • A 76yo woman traveling alone collapsed mid-flight. I gave her my business class seat. Sat in economy, middle seat for 11 hours. It was exhausting to say the least but I got through it, thinking I did a good thing for someone who needed it.
    Before landing, she came back. Pointed at me and whispered, “I’ll make you regret it, young man. I’m not letting you off easy.”
    I froze when she called the air hostess and said, “This son gave me his seat and sat in the middle of economy for eleven hours while I slept like a selfish woman. I will not land without everyone knowing about it. And I want your name so I can write to the airline.”
    The air hostess looked genuinely surprised and I was totally caught off guard. She brought me a meal from business class, upgraded my checked bag, and gave me her card for the letter. The old woman sat in the empty seat next to me for the last few minutes of the flight and talked to me like we had known each other for years.
    She had been a teacher for 38 years and she had opinions about everything. She said, “The problem with kindness is people do it quietly and then it disappears. I prefer to make a noise. Be loud and proud. You’re a good man and you deserve to know it.”
    She wrote the letter too. The airline sent me a voucher three weeks later!
