14 Home Bakers Whose Fall Pies Look Too Good to Cut: Mom’s 60th-Birthday Pie and Rose Apple Pie

My mom made a pie dish in pottery class this summer, and it wobbles exactly like her first bowl. She has baked an apple pie in it every Sunday since, and she gives it a quarter turn before she cuts so it sits flat. These 14 home bakers made fall pies, from apple pie to pumpkin pie, that look almost too good to cut, and they cut them anyway.

A Pumpkin Pie for Mom’s 60th Birthday Got a Ring of Pastry Flowers and a “60” on Top

“In crust we trust, but pray for this one”

It’s not perfect and the edges got a little crisp but I’m not mad about it 😊

A birthday pumpkin pie as requested by my mother, but I wanted to make it special for her 60th!

I actually used some fondant plunger cutters. But yes it was a bit time consuming!😅

I feel like I need to make more pies now.

Someone’s First Pie Came Out of the Oven Looking Like a Portal Into the Underworld

“I tried to bake my first pie... inadvertently created a portal into the underworld”

Baked at 350 F for about one hour to complete the ritual.

It is the silenced ones that attempt to scream with the most effort. It all started with just a few murmurs halfway into the baking. Now the memories are like echoes in my mind that will keep me up at night. I regret what I have done.

I consulted the guardian of my soul, a canine chihuahua. The incantation included, “Oh my gosh, what happened? What is this?”

I was a “Sir” prior to this event that converted our sanctuary into a pandemonium. I’m already banned from all of next year’s fun festivals.

Pastry Elephants Marched Around the Edge of a Pumpkin Pie and Somehow Held Their Shape

“Elephants marching around the pumpkin pie. I’m thrilled they held their shape!”

I made the filling from fresh roasted sugar pumpkins.

I rolled out the extra dough and used a cookie cutter to cut out the elephants. I placed them in a [glass] dish and froze them for an hour. I poured the pumpkin filling into the shell and placed the frozen elephants around the edge, using a bit of milk to get them to stick. Need to keep an eye on it and tent with foil if they get too brown.

From the author:

My mom’s clay pie dish holds exactly one apple pie and a little bit of drama. It wobbles on every surface in her kitchen, so she bakes it on a folded dish towel and has opinions about which towel. The first Sunday, the pie came out tilted like a hat. She served it anyway and called it “rustic.” I have since learned that rustic means the dish won.

A Rose Apple Pie Finally Worked on the Fourth Try, and 10 Coworkers Begged Nobody to Cut It

“After 3 failed attempts I finally made a rose apple pie!”

Too watery, I forgot to spray the foil that covers it while it cooks. So when I took the foil off it stuck and tore the pie in half!

Well the second attempt my dog loved.

I gave it to a friend at work and everyone was freaking out as he cut into it. Being at a grocery store seeing 10 employees huddled together screaming “Noooo don’t do it!” and other incoherent screeches was very weird for them.

Even if it fails it doesn’t matter! I bet you will be great at it. It’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

A Pumpkin From the Garden Was the “Wrong Kind” for Pie and Made the Best Filling Anyway

“We grew this pumpkin in our garden.”

We were told it’s not the right kind of pumpkin for pie. It was yellow and it took a long time to roast. It made the most luxurious filling I’ve ever had.

It was a beautiful ornamental and my wife was going to feed it to the chickens.

I didn’t know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. My daughter had two slices and she’s been spoiled by her grandma’s pumpkin pie. She told her mother it was “so good.”

After eating this pie I ordered three seeds packs, two are the best pumpkins for pie and one for soup. I’m hooked.

Not a Pumpkin Pie Fan, This Baker Painted a Grinning Jack-o’-Lantern on an Apple Pie Instead

“My Halloween Apple Pie”

I know but I’m not a fan of pumpkin pie...

Yes, I made it from scratch. I baked the decoration separately and I also blind baked the bottom crust because I really wanted to avoid making a soggy pie.

I thought about it but I like that my creations only last a little while before being consumed 😅

A Baker Known for Scary Pie Faces Made Grandma the “Non-Scary” Apple Pie She Asked For

“My grandmother asked for a ‘non-scary’ apple pie. I wanted to impress her with a lattice pattern and hope she likes it! Love you grandma😘”

I have some scary ones on my profile.

You are wise. The face follows into the dreams of whoever eats it.

Who likes runny pie you know?

Half Apple, Half Pumpkin: a Family Cookbook Pie That Turned Into a Yin-Yang by Accident

“I tried experimenting with half apple, half pumpkin pie, I think it looks pretty great so far!”

I must confess though, I didn’t realize it looked like a yin yang until just now 😅 It was because I didn’t want just a straight line down the center.

This is an idea I’ve had for a month or so and I’ve been trying to figure out how to do it. I was looking through my family’s recipe book and found an apple pie recipe and a pumpkin pie recipe that had similar temps and times.

I ended up making the crust a bit thicker because I was terrified that the pumpkin mixture would leak into the apples.

From the author:

Since pottery class, Mom counts everything, so I know her first crust took four tries. She says re-rolling dough counts double, the same rule she uses for unraveled knitting and re-thrown bowls. By her math, that first Sunday pie took eight crusts. I tasted it. It was worth at least six.

A 7-Year-Old Wove the Lattice on Her First Apple Pie All by Herself

“Her first apple pie! She did the lattice all by herself. So proud!! (I cut the apples, lets be real, she’s 7)”

We had it with ice cream. We didn’t have any nutmeg like the recipe said but used lots of extra cinnamon, her dad’s favorite, so it was delicious!

She says, “I’m gonna be a builder and only cook at home” haha.

Someone Hand-Cut Every Leaf on Their First Apple Pie, and Then Nobody in the Family Ate It

“My first go at this and no one in my family ate it.”

I honestly thought it was pretty good. Turns out no one in my family likes apple pie.

Thank you so much :) Definitely more for me tomorrow.

I bought fondant molds but they were too deep, so I ended up just using a butter knife and toothpick! I should have bought cookie cutters instead of molds because that would have been easier.

I might just make apple everything from now on and condition them to like it haha.

From the author:

Nobody cuts the Sunday pie but Mom. I tried once, forgot the quarter turn, and the dish rocked like a boat while I stood there holding the knife. She took it back without a word. In our family, that is a full sentence. She cut the pie, turned the dish and handed me the first slice anyway.

A First-Time Contest Entry Won 2nd Place and a Special Award for Using Blueberries Picked by Hand

“It was my first time entering a baking competition and my blueberry pie won 2nd place and the Oregon award at the Oregon State Fair!”

The Oregon award goes to the best dessert that is made using Oregon ingredients. In my case, I hand picked all the blueberries from a local farm!

Their only requirements are that it was made from scratch including the crust and filling.

Oh I got a [huge] funnel cake to celebrate!

A First Apple Pie Made With Apples Picked at a Local Orchard Is Now a Yearly Fall Tradition

“First apple pie with apples that I picked myself!”

I made my first apple pie this week (and first homemade pie)! I picked some evercrisp apples at a local orchard recently and got to use them all up for this (I’m feeling very “farm to table” with this pie lol). It is sooo delicious! Baking a pie with apples that I pick myself will definitely become a yearly fall tradition for me!

My smoke detectors kept going off while baking the pie, but it was totally worth it because it came out perfect.

A Husband Who Fuses Cookies Into “One Giant, Charred Monster Cookie” Wove a Perfect Lattice on His First Try

“First apple pie ft. my husband’s lattice work”

I usually avoid pie crust at all costs because pastry genuinely intimidates me (and I can never seem to get that flaky, golden magic my grandma used to pull off) but we had a ton of apples to use up tonight.

My husband (who normally can’t bake drop cookies without accidentally fusing them into one giant, charred monster cookie) suggested we bake together. I handled the dough rolling and crimp, and he ended up cutting in the butter, prepping the filling, and literally wove this entire lattice himself on his very first attempt.

Safe to say I’m a very loved, happy & proud wife ❤️

Grandma’s Custard Pie Recipe Went Online, and Grandma Was Blown Away by the Response

“My grandma’s classic custard pie recipe”

According to my grandma, it’s the point right before it boils. That’s when it’s scalded.

She does have a coconut version she makes for Easter, but it’s a slightly different recipe. I just texted her for it :)

My grandma has been blown away by the response.

The custard pie in the last story comes from a grandma who is still one text message away and who was blown away that strangers wanted her recipe. A recipe can be copied anywhere. The person who taught it to you is the part you can’t print.

Whose pie recipe does your family still bake every fall? Tell us in the comments.
