This is amazing!
14 Hosts Who Turned a Closet or an Office Into a Guest Room, and a Bed Under the Basement Stairs

At my parents’ house there are more guests than beds, so for years the guest room has been the upstairs landing. It’s an air mattress, a lamp on a chair and my mom’s rule that whoever sleeps there gets the first coffee. These 14 hosts squeezed a guest room into a closet, an office or the space under the stairs, and their photos show exactly how.
A Bed Built Into a Closet, With a Custom Mattress Almost 100 Inches Long
“Was told I should post my closet to bed conversion”
The measurements of the mattress which I custom-made are About 26×99 Inches. It’s big enough to fit a single person. It’s like being on a very long cot
An Office by Day That Becomes a Guest Room When the Murphy Bed Comes Down
“Made a Murphy Bed with Floating Shelves for Legs to Free Up Space in My Office”
Pretty darn proud of this one. It’s my first time using a table saw for real and also my first attempt at miter folded floating shelves. It’s got its imperfections, but I am really happy with how it turned out. I plan on mounting a reading light inside and some gas struts to help with lowering it.
This is in my office that doubles as a guest room and home gym, but we rarely have guests that spend the night, so the task of taking stuff off of the shelves is nominal against the space savings.
A Guest Room an Aunt Fixed Up for Her 8-Year-Old Niece
“My 8-year-old niece is coming to visit; fixed up my guest room for her :)”
The note was to her from my wonderful and sweet boyfriend! 💜
He gathered up some books and comics for her and wrote her a cheery note on the paper bag the books are in.
We do love her very much. We are the coolest uncle and aunt. :)
From the author:
The coffee rule isn’t really about coffee. The landing is at the top of the stairs, right outside my parents’ door, and my dad has been up at 5:40 every morning of my life. Whoever’s on the air mattress hears him step around it, then hears the coffee maker start. Mom decided the first cup is the apology.
A Twin Bed Under the Basement Stairs That Once Housed a Brother for 3 Months
“Twin bed under the basement stairs. My reading hide out”
200 yr old rowhouse in center city philadelphia. I gutted the interior though. New basement stairs.
Hardest past was building it big enough to fit the mattress. That back maple wall is directly against the masonry foundation wall. I built it right to under the bottom steps so your foot doesn’t hit an angled ceiling. My sister in law is 6’1″ and she has slept in it comfortably
It was occupied for 3 months as a guest bed when younger brother was between apartments.
Mmmm...Harry Potter style...I like it 😅.
A Bare Spare Room Turned Into a Guest Room Worth Having Even Without Guests
“Guest room (before and after)”
For this guest room, I spent time thinking about how these spaces are often treated, like a place for a random couch or extra storage just whatever doesn’t fit in the home.
I really think spaces create a layer that affects human interaction and relationships.
A Murphy Bunk Bed for a Lake House the Family Outgrew
“Murphy double bunk bed”
This is in a very old lake house that the family has outgrown and more beds were needed. We had a weird space on this wall after the old stone chimney was removed. My wife asked for a Murphy bunk bed but after weeks we could find no plans, only pictures of the finished product online. So this is the first project I’ve drawn up myself...which haha made it the project I am most proud of!
We’ve had two adults on top but this bed was intended for our kids. We have an unofficial 250 lb weight limit for top bunk.
A Murphy Bed So a Mother-in-Law Wouldn’t Have to Sleep on the Floor
“I built a Murphy bed so my mother-in-law wouldn’t have to sleep on the floor when she visits.”
I did do the art myself. I penciled in the mountains, and then starting at the top, I painted in each section with progressively darker grays and sprayed a light layer of white over the bottom of the section before painting the mountains below it.
The kit only includes the hardware; building the bed itself is left as an exercise for the user.
A Guest Room That Became a Library, With a Closet Full of Books
“I turned my guest bedroom into a library, with a book closet and trundle bed”
I still wanted to be able to have a guest room, but also a room I would enjoy spending time in. I think it worked out perfectly.
Many of mine are R.L.Stine books hahahah I’ve dubbed it the R.L. Stine reading room ❤️
A Guest Room Nobody Sleeps In, Because Guests Get the Host’s Own Bedroom
“Guest room but I usually give guests my bedroom so I can use my computer until 3am”
I’m 41. My spaces definitely weren’t this nice until recently.
It can actually be pulled out to fit two twin mattresses side by side, which I’ve never done.
From the author:
When all four of us come home with the kids, the beds run out before lunch. Dad plans the night on the back of an envelope, like a seating chart for a wedding: who gets our old room, who gets the couch, which grandkids share the floor. The landing goes to whoever arrived last. My oldest sister has started driving in a day early.
A Library, Home Office and Guest Room Where the Laptop Moves Out for Guests
“My library/ home office/ guest room”
I take my laptop out of there and just use the kitchen table. I don’t really NEED my desk if they’re staying a couple days. We usually only have guests stay on the weekend anyway
A Guest Room With the Wi-Fi Password on a Letterboard by the Door
“My guest room in Halifax, Nova Scotia”
Nothing in the room is an antique and it’s not a museum. There’s a little letterboard on the wall when you first walk into the room with the Wi-Fi password and a reminder to truly make yourself at home.
I love having guests! 💕
I’d love to have non-stop guests for months.
A Plain White Guest Room Makeover That Turned Out to Be the Dog’s Room
“My guest room before & after”
Its a nightstand wooden dog crate
It is where I crate my dog when I have to leave. I say guest room but if i was truthful I’d say its my dogs room!
A Guest Room Where Two-Legged and Four-Legged Guests Are Both Welcome
“My pet-friendly guest room”
We’re ready for guests! Two-legged or four-legged guests are all welcome.
A Pink Guest Room Built for a Mother-in-Law Who Always Puts Everyone Else First
“Guest room for MIL, Sweden”
Took several months.
It was designed with my MIL in mind. She’s never been able to have a girly place all her own. So now she has a nice little haven all for herself when she comes. I can’t wait to show her when she comes to visit. She’s an amazing and kind woman and she deserves something that she wants for herself.
This room does not suit the rest of my home. But it’s what she wanted and that was more important. I was freaking out when it was just pink paint in the room. I hated it so much that I just shut the door for a few months lol
It’s so hard to not want to show her but I want her to see it in person. She always puts everyone else first so I’m hoping that she really loves it and feels appreciated.
A guest room doesn’t have to be a room. It needs a bed, a lamp within reach and someone who’s glad you came. At my parents’ house, it also needs coffee.
Where do your guests sleep when the house is full, and who gets the best spot? Tell us in the comments.
