A medical condition is something that you should never be embarrassed about. That manager should be fired.
14 Times Kindness and Compassion at Work Changed Everything, Even When Quitting Felt Like the Only Option

The true meaning of workplace kindness cannot be found in a definition from a company handbook. What does it actually mean to be kind when a coworker is dealing with the worst day of their life? These 14 stories show a fair and understanding workplace that fosters second chances, prioritizes forgiveness, and reduces the impact of a difficult shift.
- At a client lunch, my colostomy bag showed beneath my blouse. My manager said, “Cover that. People are eating.” I covered it, humiliated. No one spoke for several seconds. Then the client looked at me in the eyes, put down his fork in and turned to my manager instead of me. He said he wasn’t about to sit through a meal with someone who treated a colleague that way over something she couldn’t help. He told her plainly that if anyone should feel bad at that table, it wasn’t me, and that everyone deserves basic respect. Then he looked back at me, picked his fork back up, and asked me to walk him through the proposal like nothing had happened. The support I felt was unreal. He signed the contract that afternoon. My manager never brought up the lunch again, and neither did I, but she never spoke to me that way in front of a client again either.
- I came in on three hours of sleep after a night in the ER with my kid. My manager took one look at my face, canceled my meetings, and told me to go home. Acting out of pure compassion, she covered my shift herself.

- I got laid off two days before my wedding. HR called me into a room I’d never been in before and it was over in about six minutes. The grief I felt was immense. I spent my wedding week trying not to think about the fact that I had no job to come back to.
My old boss heard about the layoff through the grapevine and started making calls, not because she owed me anything, but out of pure kindness, she said she couldn’t stand the thought of me starting a marriage with that hanging over meBy the time I got back from my honeymoon, she had lined up three interviews. I took the second one and I’m still there five years later.
- On the morning of a two-day work conference, I left my wallet at home. The stress was unreal when I realized it when I got to the front of the breakfast line. I had no way to pay for breakfast and was going to skip it. Luckily, the woman I had just met at check in, was behind me in line and noticed I was stopped. After I told her the situation, she paid for my breakfast without a thought. I tried to pay her back later that day at lunch to show my gratitude, but she insisted I keep it. Instead, she told me to pay it forward to someone in need.
- A coworker noticed I hadn’t eaten lunch in three days straight because of a deadline. She started leaving a sandwich on my desk every afternoon without a word. She never once brought it up.
- My mother was sick and I’d already burned through every paid day off I had. I didn’t know how I was going to afford to be there for her at the end.
A few weeks before she left us, I got called into a meeting and found out that twelve people I worked with, some of whom I barely knew outside of hallway small talk, had each donated a few of their own vacation days so I could take two full weeks off with pay. The compassion of my team changed everything as I navigated this immense grief
- I forgot my wallet on the first day at new job and couldn’t afford lunch. A woman I’d met an hour earlier paid for my meal and waved off every attempt I made to pay her back.
- During a round of layoffs, my supervisor pulled me aside and quietly gave me the names of three companies that were hiring, along with a personal reference for each one. He was on the list to be cut too.

- My very first Monday at a new job, I found a sticky note stuck to the corner of my monitor when I sat down. It read, “Bathroom’s down the hall, coffee machine eats quarters, you’re doing fine.”
I laughed out loud alone at my desk. I asked around for weeks, trying to figure out who left it, half joking, half genuinely curious. Nobody ever admitted to it.
- My father passed on a Thursday night and I didn’t come into work again until the following Monday. Lost in a haze of grief, I wasn’t sure how I was going to face the day. When I walked back in, someone had already organized a meal train for my family without asking me first. Someone else had been quietly watering my desk plants the whole time I was gone. A third coworker had gone through my calendar and rescheduled every meeting I had for the next two weeks so I wouldn’t have to think about any of it. My gratitude for their support was overwhelming.
What would you do if you saw this happen to someone on your team?
- When I was six months pregnant, I continued to do physical inventory work and lift heavy boxes. I thought if I didn’t act differently, my coworkers would treat me the same and I would keep their respect. Because I never wanted to be treated differently, I never asked for help. One guy on the team must have thought about my heavy lifting situation differently. All shift long, he took every heavy box out of my cart before I could do it myself and didn’t say a single thing about it. He did this every shift until I went on leave. I didn’t ever say anything, and my guess is that he never did, either.
Darling, you’re lucky he did that, if the heavy lifting had gone on much longer, it’s possible - or probable - that would have led to a miscarriage. 💖💖💖💖
- I got a flat tire on the highway during my morning commute and pulled over onto the shoulder, already dreading how late I’d be.
A coworker happened to drive past, recognized my car, and pulled over behind me without a second thought. He changed the tire himself in the pouring rain while I held the umbrella, and when I tried to hand him some cash for his trouble, he just shook his head and told me to forget it.
- My laptop crashed after erasing all my slides right before my important presentation! I panicked because I did not know if I could fill the time. Luckily, a coworker who did not know the project even canceled her lunch and helped me rebuild half of my presentation based on what I had informally told the team the prior week. This still left me with a lack of slides, but she and I finished the rest with only four minutes to spare! I have never felt such immense gratitude for a colleague.
In every job, there are still people. People that have to deal with all the stress that comes with life, not just the stress work brings. People are able to be fair, maintain mutual respect, and are flexible when it is needed the most. These 14 moments show that just because you are at work, it does not mean you have to stop being kind.
