The power of our bodies is truly incredible — for example, human bones are stronger than steel, and our stomach acid can dissolve metal! And that’s not all, our organs have so many amazing skills that have yet to be discovered.
We at Bright Side found 15 fascinating facts about our body that really surprised us. We bet you haven’t even heard of some of them.
- The resolution of the human eye is 576 megapixels which is higher than any available high-resolution camera.
- An adult human uses up to 200 different muscles to take just one step.
- The cornea is the only part of the body that doesn’t have direct blood vessels, so it gets a significant amount of oxygen directly from the air.
- In the morning we are about 1 cm taller than when we went to sleep. The reason is gravity — during the day cartilage in our spine and knees gets compressed, and lying in bed during the night spreads it back out.
- Stomach acid is so strong that it can dissolve metal. It doesn’t burn through the stomach thanks to a lining which is being constantly replaced.
- An average person can walk about 100,000 miles (160,934 km) during their life, which is like walking around the Earth 5 times.
- Unlike bones and other organs, our teeth are the only part of the body that can’t heal and repair themselves.
- Human bones are extremely sturdy — they are stronger than steel or concrete. One cubic inch of bone can bear a load of 19,000 lbs (8,618 kg) or more.
- There is a tiny hole at the bottom of the eyelid — it’s called the lacrimal punctum and it drains tears to the nose. This is why we get a runny nose after crying.
- The whole surface of our skin (the epidermis) fully regenerates itself every month, so a human can have about 1,000 different “skins” in a lifetime.
- A heartbeat can synchronize with the rhythm of music. It is a good method that can help you calm down and regulate blood pressure and respiration.
