In Oxford, Ohio, a man nearly took down his skeleton display after angry notes from neighbors, until a young woman who drove past on her way to treatment wrote to say it was the highlight of her day. He stayed up all night reworking the yard so the skeletons could cheer her on, a random act of kindness CBS Evening News later shared with the whole country. That same Halloween generosity shows up everywhere once you start looking: a mom dumping her own candy into a stranger’s empty bowl, two girls sharing their haul, small-town firefighters walking kids door to door when parents had to work.

These 15 stories, from full-size Snickers bars to a lunch lady’s pumpkin gift bag, are about the kindness that never makes the candy aisle, and the gratitude, and sometimes the friendship, that comes back afterward.

  • “A man from Oxford, Ohio, considered taking down his scary yard decorations after receiving angry mail from neighbors. A young woman drove past the house as she was undergoing medical treatments. To his surprise, she wrote him a special letter concerning the decorations.

    She shared that it was the highlight of her day. Following this, he reworked the display to have a section of skeletons cheering her on. The man reportedly stayed up all night working on the lawn.

    The story even has a happy update. When the woman drove by for her final radiation treatment, the skeletons had new signs that cheered her on with messages like, ’Good Job! You made it!’ This inspired, not only a friendship, but the man, filled with gratitude, kept the display active year round.”
  • “One of our neighbors turns their house into a true haunted house every halloween, open to the public with the donation of a canned good. Because of this, we get a lot of trick or treaters every year. This year, we gave out one full-sized candy to each kid (a mix of snickers, m&ms, butterfingers, twix, mambas, and sour punch straws), and I was hoping I had purchased enough (215 pieces total). Around 8:30, it happened, we ran out. I was apologizing to the other kids still coming up the driveway, when out of nowhere, a mom comes up with a big bag of the Costco mini candy bars and dumps it into the bowl. She said they never get trick of treaters in the neighborhood, so she was happy to help. Whoever you are, thank you! You helped continue the fun!”

I’ve decided to leave work an hour early next year, to have more time for taking my own kids trick-or-treating and to get back home in time to catch more of the younger trick-or-treaters.”

    The grandmama in front of us with a crazy full cart let us go ahead of her so sweetly. I helped her load the belt and thanked her profusely and told her to remind her grandkids that they are spoiled by the best gramma ever.

    Honestly, the most wholesome visit I’ve ever had there. Even the vendors were polite, I watched people saying ‘excuse me’ and ‘oh, thank you’ numerous times.

    I had expected a trip there to be another test of my patience, but instead, walked out with a smile. The worker helping load the elderly woman literally parked next to us load her car as she counted out $5 in singles for him as a tip.

    Love when people come together despite race or anything else and just show kindness. (I flipped him a $5 for being awesome and he smiled so huge thanking me.)”
  • “This is on a porch that overlooks the street. Years ago, we made some fancy Halloween jack-o-lanterns and placed them there and families would stop and take pictures with their kids. So we started making these and people stop and take pictures daily. Even ask when a new display will be made :). I love that such a simple thing can brighten someone’s day. And I was overjoyed when random painted rocks started being left at the display.”

Two young ladies went to grab something and realized it was empty, instead of being upset they put some of their own haul in and said they wanted everyone to have something. Approx age 12-14 and it wasn’t for my benefit as I was around the corner sorting recycling. Hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween, curious as to how everyone’s night went?”

So now that I’m ok financially, I buy only full size and have some backup minis in case I run out (tho sadly I’ve already broken into that bag bc it’s peanut butter M&Ms!!!!). And the neighbor’s girls who are so so good (quiet, polite, just generally lovely)...I’m making them a special bag with 10x the amount of candy as the rest.”

There were two brothers and both parents; I love to give to parents who actually accompany their kids (and I’ll give to anyone in a costume, regardless of age). At the end of the night, I just unloaded everything I had left on these kids. Full-sized Snickers bars, fruit snacks, cookies. They got it all.

    As they were leaving, I heard one say, ’This was the best house!’”

    Then he comes running back, and thanks me for the candy. His dad called out to him, “Hey! What’s keeping ya?

    The boy answered, ‘I had to say thanks!’ And he scampered off.

    I loved that polite shark.”
  • “Earlier today I went to a friend’s home (we’re in each other’s bubble) to give Halloween candy to trick or treaters. We have a long driveway in an out of the way neighborhood, and since we don’t get kids here, I hang out with my friend to hand out candy. It rained pretty hard here a couple of days ago and our driveway was just completely covered with fallen leaves. Yesterday everything was still too wet to blow the leaves, and I simply didn’t get to it today. My neighbor was blowing their leaves when I left our driveway. We waved to each other just like always. When I got home, most of our driveway was clear of leaves! I am so grateful! I’m sure it was our neighbor, sometimes he just does this kind of thing in our neighborhood. Tomorrow I’m going to bake something and bring it over to them.”

Well, I was sketching one day in the cafeteria, and my pencil had fallen and rolled into the hallway. The table that I was at was in the corner, away from everyone, and the closest to the door. Well, a lunch lady, I’ll call her ‘J’, who had been walking back into the cafeteria picked it up. She was an older woman, maybe 40-60...

    I would talk to J daily, well, one Halloween, I got called to the office. I was terrified that I got in trouble for something, but when I walked in, the lady at the desk pointed to a cute little Halloween bag with pumpkins and ghosts on it and went ’You’ve got a gift.’ I was pretty notorious in the office for never showing up on time, so the lady knew who I was.

    Well, I took the bag with me back to class, which was a small study hall. The bag contained not one, but TWO 6 pack bottles of soft drinks, a cute little blanket with cats and dogs in little costumes, a couple of notebooks and art supplies. This woman had bought all of it for me just for talking to her. I started crying mid class because of it.”

Some of these moments cost a bag of mini bars. Others cost a full night of sleep, six hours of walking, or a stack of hand-painted skeleton signs. None of them were planned to impress anyone; they came from people noticing who was standing at the door.
