15 Travel Stories That Remind Us Warm Countries Always Come With Warm Surprises

You plan a warm-country holiday for the sea, the food, and the sun. What you don’t plan — and what you remember years later — is everything else. Travel to warm countries does this reliably: it offers exactly what it promised, and then adds something you couldn’t have planned.
These 15 true travel stories about warm countries, laughter and the human connection that happens between the departure gate and the memories you’ll still be telling at dinner are the stories that stayed.

  • In 1998, my mom and I went on a bus tour around Europe, with a week by the sea in Spain. On the bus, there was a group of girls, all very young, with trendy bangs. They made no secret of the fact that they were going to Spain to find themselves husbands.
And there was also a 75-year-old woman, a speech therapist, who said she was just going to relax. She was modest, but she had her lipstick on.
Well, after a week in Spain, all the girls were sad and on their own, while this sweet old lady was being seen off by an elderly Spanish gentleman, who hugged and kissed her warmly and kept waving after her for a long, long time.
  • My husband had 2 dreams ever since he was a child — to go to Italy and to see the sea. For 2 years after our wedding, I set aside every spare penny and cut back on things for myself as much as I could. Finally, I bought the tickets, booked the hotels, and gave him the trip for his birthday.
And you know what? All those trinkets and creams and shoes and purses I never bought, they don’t matter. What matters is sitting on the boulders by the water at night, listening to the waves, and seeing the shining eyes of the person I love. Dreams should come true!

They say some locals don’t go swimming during peak season. First, they have to work. Second, they’re used to the sea. But how can you not enjoy the sea when it’s right here, so close?

  • We needed a place to spend the night in Rome. We were dropping from exhaustion. We found some hostel in the navigation app and dragged ourselves over there.
We walked in, and it was empty — not a soul around. We waited and waited, nearly ready to lie down on the floor. We decided to take the keys and pay in the morning.
We spent the night, came out, and once again there was nobody at the front desk. We didn’t have any cash and wanted to pay by card. We waited and waited again, left a note with our phone number, and no one ever called back.
  • On a beach in Turkey, I met a Turkish woman, and we watched each other’s things whenever we went for a swim.
If guys came over to introduce themselves, she would ask if I wanted to talk to them. I’d say no, and then she would calmly send them on their way. No one even came near us after that. I felt so comfortable and safe, and I still think of her to this day.
  • Dad went to Hainan Island in China and brought back a piece of paper with some beautiful Chinese characters written on it. The seller assured him it was a wish for prosperity. The saying hung in a frame in our kitchen.
About 15 years later, an acquaintance who studies Chinese translated it. How we laughed! First of all, it was written with mistakes and illegible characters (yes, Chinese people can have bad handwriting too).
And the translation didn’t mean prosperity or well-being at all. It was simply a line from a song that was popular 15 years ago.

For some people, a trip to Turkey is a dream come true.

Well, here I am in Turkey for the first time! I’m overflowing with emotion, I love everything, and you know, I almost feel a little embarrassed to be so happy. For some people, a trip to Turkey is something ordinary, but for me, this is my very first trip abroad, something I’ve dreamed of for 30 years. We’re in Fethiye!

  • On Phu Quoc, I met retirees in their seventies. They had traveled abroad to the seaside for the first time in their lives.
You should have seen them — they were like kids. They splashed around in the sea and went on every ride. They were truly savoring life! And I was soaking up their joy.

Knowing that you don’t have to cook on vacation adds 10 points to how good breakfast tastes!

  • In Turkey, 2 guys dressed as Janissaries came up to me on the waterfront and started flirting: “Beautiful, a photo for you is free. You’re more stunning than this sunset!” I laughed, but I agreed to take a picture.
They took a few photos, handed me back my phone, and said, “The photos are free. But if you want us to leave, you owe us one more smile!” We giggled and went our separate ways — such fun guys.

  • We were sitting in a little café in Rome when my friend went to wash her hands. She came back laughing, but wouldn’t say a word. So I went.
I walk in — there’s a faucet, but it’s partly wrapped in tape. No handle. No sensors. Quite the puzzle. I peek out and see our waiter. I ask him about it.
He laughs too and says, “Go on, clap your hands.” I clap, totally confused. “Bravissimo!” he shouts, then comes over and presses a small pedal under the sink with his foot.

When a cat climbed into a bag and can’t get out:

Bright Side

In reality, they’re protecting the locals from the cat’s eerie stare (some local procession is supposed to pass through the gate, and for some reason the cats won’t be happy about it).

  • I went to Hainan. Day one. I’m completely in love with the sea. It’s morning, I’m sitting on the beach, just taking it all in. There are a few other vacationers nearby, but not many, and they’re all so laid-back, like, “Yeah, yeah, we’ve seen this sea of yours already.”
Then a local man shows up with his dog. The pup happily starts digging a hole in the sand and proudly shows the result to his owner. And I’m sitting there thinking, “Wow, dogs love the sea too.” Honestly, that dog was the happiest being on the beach.
Bright Side
  • A year ago, I was in Rome for work. For context, I’m a model. I went into a café, got myself a coffee and a little pastry dusted with cocoa. Ate it, everything was fine.
I’m walking down the street and men are turning around, practically doing double takes, and women are looking away. And I’m thinking to myself: Well, Rome, I’ve conquered you!
I walk into some fancy boutique, pick out the most expensive outfits, step into the fitting room, and then I realize everything. All that cocoa powder was still on my face. I started laughing out loud right there in the fitting room.
  • I was in a bad mood and stressing over silly things for a whole year. I walked around irritable and kept snapping at everyone. Then I went on vacation to Italy, and now I’m back happy, with a smile from ear to ear. Nothing lifts your spirits more than handsome guys shouting every day, “Marry me!”

Travel gives you the holiday you expected, and then slips something extra into your luggage: a story you arrive with. Sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it’s one of those moments of unexpected human kindness you weren’t looking for and never forgot. If your warm-country trip gave you one of those — the comments are open, and the sun is still up.
