The most valuable collections in the world aren’t in museums. They’re in people’s wardrobes and garages and spare rooms — boxes of things that mean nothing to anyone else and everything to the person who kept them.   • When I was a child, I brought home a whole bucket of smooth, colorful pieces of sea glass from the beach. My mom grumbled that they were taking up space, and later even said she had tossed them out. I was hurt.

  • My mom and I have a big collection of fridge magnets. Then one day, my mom’s new suitor came over.
    He spent a long time studying the fridge door, then suddenly turned pale, pointed at one little magnet, and said, “Where did you get this wooden goldfish magnet? I only made a couple of these when I was young, and I gave one to a girl at the summer camp!”
    Mom gasped. They started piecing it together, and it turned out they had known each other back then. Now they’re sitting there, reminiscing about their camp days. It’s so cute.
