Every home has at least one space that nobody quite knows what to do with. A balcony full of boxes. An attic nobody visits. A loggia used for storage. The people in this collection looked at these overlooked spaces and saw something different — a botanical garden, a breakfast table, a secret reading club for one, a child’s first art exhibition. These 16 photos and stories are about happiness, family, pets, and the small spaces that become the most loved rooms.
A woman shared the botanical garden she created on her balcony.
A cozy nook for curling up with a book.
Wonderful mountain view — someone got lucky.
- I get home, and the moment I walk in, my wife says, “I have a surprise for you.” And she leads me to the balcony. Last time, the surprise was a puppy. I sigh and trudge after her.
She proudly opens the door, and I see a “garland” of dried fish hanging there. My father-in-law loves to fish, and he brought it over. He knows I love the stuff. Now that’s my kind of surprise.
Made himself comfortable in the cozy nook.
This is just begging for tea with Middle Eastern sweets.
This would be a perfect place for a date.
The unique life of Italian balconies
- I remember when I lived in Italy, not a single balcony was enclosed with glass. We had a big apartment, so I would just ride my bike around on the balcony.
Whenever we didn’t feel like walking to the store, every balcony had a basket tied to it, and we’d always lower it down and call out to the shopkeeper what we needed. And whenever there were celebrations, everyone would come out onto their balconies, celebrating loudly and shouting.
Having your own nook is important.
For the first time in my 31 years, I have a space of my own for my computer. A balcony. It’s 9 feet 10 inches wide and 3 feet 6 inches deep. It’s insulated. The kid took care of the artistic touches.
Such a vibrant balcony, and the cactus bloomed too: it has 12 flowers!
The cat adds 100,500 points to the cozy factor.
People online are debating which is better: an enclosed or open balcony. Here are the fans of open space.
A view of a peaceful green courtyard is pure bliss.
- Our balcony isn’t enclosed and is completely open, with just a railing, and it’s wonderful! Flowers in the summer, holiday decorations in the winter. The moment you step outside, you instantly feel like you’re outdoors: we have a quiet, leafy courtyard. It never even occurred to us to enclose it with panels or glass.
This is what mine looks like. I have breakfast every day and enjoy the flowers. They wouldn’t have grown like this on an enclosed balcony! And yes, it’s only 3 months a year, but it’s worth it.
It makes you want to come over and invite yourself in for tea.
A quiet book club with a cat
- I grew up in a house with an attic. We kids loved hanging out up there! There were so many interesting things: old suitcases, my mom’s shoes, bags full of postcards, and even an old crib. A giant spider lived by the window, but I never went near it.
It was my secret place, my headquarters. I’d bring tea in a thermos, a roll with butter and jam, and read Conan the Barbarian, or something like that. And the cat would come up too. Perfect!
The man says he even spends the night with his doggo here.
Nobody in this collection set out to create their favorite room. They just stopped walking past a space and started using it. That’s all it took — a kettle, a chair, a few pots, and a cat who approved. The rest followed. If you have such a corner in your home, the comments are exactly the right place for it.
