17 Office Stories That Prove Every Workplace Has Its Own Unwritten Rules — and Its Own Comedy Show

An office is where you spend eight hours a day with people you didn’t choose. That sounds like it could be difficult — and sometimes it is. But it’s also where the tradition started as an accident. The phrase became shorthand for something nobody outside would understand. The person nobody expected to be funny turned out to be the funniest in the building.

These 17 office stories about laughter, human connection, and the comedy that forms between deadlines remind us that the funniest part of any working day is always the part nobody scheduled.

  • The boss had a new grandson, so he threw a spread at work. Everyone was standing politely with their plates, waiting for him to make a toast. Then a young coworker walked in and started putting food into her containers. The boss nearly choked: “Could you at least wait until everyone has eaten?” And the lady fired back: “It’s just that my sister has a get-together tonight, and we don’t really have much to put on the table, and you’ll have leftovers here anyway.”
  • A young woman joined the team — heels, short dress, the whole look. We started thinking badly of the boss, but he was just piling work on her nonstop. And today he came out with: “Every day at 12:00 sharp, in my office!” Rumors started flying, and then it suddenly turned out that this girl was his friend’s daughter, and she has a phenomenal memory. She can multiply 3-digit numbers in her mind and knows how to organize and systematize any kind of work. When the boss realized that, he immediately gave her 2 positions. What’s more, she was the one who insisted on it, saying she wanted to unlock her full potential. Long story short, all the coworkers started noticing that things at the company really were getting better.
Bright Side

Everything you see in this picture, except the small container of hummus at the bottom left, belongs to one of my coworkers. This fridge is shared among 8 people.

  • So last year I put a sign up at the coffee machine that said it’s now voice operated and just say “Hey Coffee Machine” and it will make your coffee. Anyways, generated a good laugh, got a few people with that one. The prank was simple, harmless, and kept everyone in great spirits for a long time.
  • For 2 years, our 20-person office had one microwave. It was plenty. Most people ate at their desks, so there was never a line. I used it almost every day to heat up leftovers — noodles, chicken, or my favorite, spaghetti with meat sauce. Then, a second, identical microwave suddenly appeared next to it. It made no sense. We didn’t need it. It felt like a weird corporate mystery. A few days later, I asked a coworker about it and learned the horrifying truth. Apparently, another employee had gotten their socks soaked during a rainy morning commute. Instead of just waiting for them to dry, they walked into the breakroom, took off their wet socks, and popped them into the microwave for a quick spin.
  • One time, our boss and her deputy came to work wearing completely identical pink summer suits. It turned out they had both bought them at the same place, without knowing about each other. At first, they laughed a little awkwardly. Then a customer walked in and exclaimed with delight, “Oh, did they introduce a new uniform for you? It’s so pretty!” I never saw them in those suits again.

I guess my boss didn’t think it looked professional during the quarterly meetings with investors and marketers.

  • I started a new job. I was told to talk about something financial (can’t recall exactly what this was) with our financial specialist in the office in front of my desk, a very nice brunette. I went and did exactly that... talked to a brunette. Who looked at me weirdly. She was in the same 2-people office, but was the co-owner of the company.
  • I once worked at a company that had all kinds of equipment. My coworkers’ devices were constantly freezing, slowing down, and just not working, while for some reason everything started up for me without a problem. My coworkers joked that the equipment was scared of me. But I never yelled at it. First, I’d use my favorite reset button, and then I’d coax it: “Come on, sweetie, wake up and get to work.” And if that didn’t help, I’d open the manual.
  • I managed to get locked out of my Active Directory account on the first day of a senior sysadmin job. That was pretty embarrassing. In my defense, I was following instructions from the employer on how to get started with various things, and there was a mistake in the instructions that caused the issue. Still, though...

At the office, we decided that cucumbers, tomatoes, and cilantro are also pot plants in their own way. The other day, the first little tomato started turning red. A small thing, but it feels wonderful!

  • It was actually Day 3, which makes it worse as I’d been in this situation since I started. I purchased new attire for the new office gig — trousers, work shirts, ties, and shoes. I get an email from one of my new colleagues — someone I knew before starting there stating that I’d left the stickers on the soles of my new shoes. (I was scrambling under a desk checking cables). That didn’t bother me so much as the massive printed “L” and “R” on each shoe sticker that made me look as if I needed guidance each morning with getting each shoe on the correct foot.

Our office Oscar is growing up a happy cat, loved by everyone.

  • First day on the job. We had an all-staff meeting at 2 p.m. so I decided around 1:15 to run down to Starbucks in the basement and get a coffee real quick before the meeting. Ended up crying in the hallway because I got lost and couldn’t find my way back. Almost missed the meeting and looked like an idiot because I thought I could navigate that crazy building! 18 years later I can walk around there in my sleep but my first day was so stressful!
  • On my second to last day at my last job, I stayed late and switched all the name plates on office doors to Sponge Bob characters. I sweet talked one of the receptionists into giving me the template for the official name plates (printed ones behind a clear panel), so they didn’t look any different at a glance. The next morning it took a bit before anyone noticed, but then everyone had to run around the office to see who’s had been changed to what.
  • My boyfriend was my boss, but we worked in different offices. One day I walked into his office and saw him typing something on his phone, smiling happily. I immediately started making up all kinds of stories in my head and went back to my desk in a ruined mood. Then I opened my phone and saw a series of sweet messages. Turns out, he had been writing them to me the whole time, not to some other person.
  • My boss called us in for a team meeting, gave us instructions, and everyone headed out. Once I was already in the hallway, I remembered I’d left my notebook on her desk, so I went back and knocked. I walk in — the office is empty. Hmm... I was just about to grab my notebook when I heard a rustling sound, and suddenly my boss crawls out from under the desk and says, “Just don’t tell anyone what you saw here. This is how I unwind: I crawl under the desk and eat candy.” I said I’d keep her secret, picked up my notebook, and went back to work — but now in a great mood. I even started to envy her a little.

Coworkers can be strange. You didn’t choose them, you can’t always understand them, and sometimes one of them dries their socks in the microwave and you have to share a kitchen with this information forever. But they also grow you vegetables, write themselves into company legend, and occasionally turn out to be exactly the people you needed around.
