Hotel staff see things that nobody else sees. Not the polished, Instagram-ready version of travel — the real one. The version where people make requests at 2am that nobody saw coming. Where guests demand solutions to problems that are genuinely outside anyone’s control. Where someone leaves a tip in a form that will be talked about for years.
And where, every now and then, a guest checks in carrying something so private and so important that the whole story only comes out on the last day — at which point it turns out to be one of the most quietly extraordinary things anyone in the building has ever witnessed.
These 19 true stories remind us that every check-in really is its own story.
- I work at a hotel. At 2 a.m., one very distinguished guest begged me to urgently find him... a live goose. The things rich people come up with!
After a while, we managed to get a goose for him. I went to hand it over to the guest and asked what he needed it for. His answer amazed me.
It turned out the goose was needed to take part in a play. The guest was a well-known actor, with a major premiere coming up that morning at a local theater, and the props team had lost the main “star” of the production — the goose.
In a panic, the actor was trying to save the situation on his own. But our concierge managed to help him: he called a farmer he knew, and the farmer happened to have one.
As a result, the entire hotel staff got free tickets to the premiere of that play — we had an absolute blast!
- A friend told me this story. One sweet family was checking into their hotel just before dawn — a grandmother, a mom, and a granddaughter. He was standing at the front desk, half-asleep.
He put them in a room by the pool, but they started to worry: what if there was noise from kids in the morning? Their English was basically at the level of gestures.
The grandmother took a long moment to gather her thoughts, then pointed out the window and said, “Children... waah-waah?”
My friend stood there in confusion for a couple of seconds at first. Then he laughed and immediately understood that she was asking whether kids would be yelling under their windows.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t switch the room — there were no vacancies. But that golden phrase, “Children... waah-waah?” became one of the all-time classic quotes from hotel guests.
- I work at a hotel front desk, and this is a story I’ll never forget. A couple was checking in after booking a standard room with a children’s crib. They kept assuring me that their “little ones were tiny and would somehow fit.”
So imagine my surprise when their “babies” walked into the lobby — 2 young women, ages 21 and 25, passports in hand! Their mom was genuinely upset and absolutely wouldn’t take a second room, insisting that her daughters were still very little.
As it turned out, many guests regularly try to pull something like this to save money. After that, we posted an official notice: “children” strictly means guests under 12 years old.
I work in a hotel, and a guest tips me in Pokémon cards. This is about the 10th he has given me!
- Love customers like this. Never got the much but a few times when it’s raining I’ve had customers give me $10 for bringing their order to their car. © Reddit
- I work as a front desk administrator at a hotel. A streetcar line runs along the street where our hotel is located. Every other guest mentions this in their reviews as one of the hotel’s downsides.
One woman outdid all my expectations. She came up to me and demanded that streetcar service be canceled for the duration of her vacation so it wouldn’t disturb her sleep and relaxation. Up to that point, I thought people like that existed only in jokes.
I get it: streetcars are noisy and and people can’t get any rest. But what does our hotel have to do with it? How could we possibly cancel their service?
- I work as a hotel administrator. You meet all kinds of people. Some drive you up the wall, some treat you to chocolate, and some make you laugh.
Today’s conversation with a guest:
“Am I late?”
“Late for what?”
“Breakfast.”
“You’re late. It’s almost 6 p.m.”
“Honestly, this doesn’t matter at all.”
He really lifted my spirits.
A friend was cleaning one of the rooms today and found this note.
- I work at a hotel front desk. Just recently, a guest wrote in our hotel messenger, extremely upset, “Guys, this is crazy, you have spiders in your hotel. My wife won’t be able to sleep now.”
I had already pictured a tarantula, and then he sends a photo of the tiniest little spider. I even wanted to reply, “Are you saying you don’t have a single little spider at home?”
- I got a job as a regular hotel housekeeper. They sent me to tidy up after a regular VIP guest. I found a ring in the room and brought it to the front desk. The administrator said, “Keep it.”
I froze at an offer like that, and then she explained that this guest leaves tips for housekeepers that way. Apparently, he didn’t have any cash on hand, so he bought a gold ring in the lobby with his card and then left it on the nightstand. He does this often.
- I work at a hotel. Breakfast is included in the room rate, while the minibar, tea, and coffee in the room are charged separately.
Today we got a wonderfully over-the-top complaint/request from some guests: to avoid paying for our coffee, they bought capsules at a store, but they don’t fit. So they asked us to bring them a different coffee machine that would work with those capsules.
I work at a chain hotel, and a guy came in saying he’d been Santa at another location before. He had a big white beard and was wearing red. After getting him and his wife checked in, he pulled this out of his pocket and gave it to me.
- Some acquaintances — a husband and wife — asked for a discount on a room because they had stayed with us before. I agreed.
Then they let me know they would arrive early, at 6 a.m., even though our check-in starts at 3 p.m. Then, that evening, they unexpectedly showed up at 8 p.m. and wanted to check in at no extra charge.
For about 10 minutes, they tried to convince me that since the room was available, they shouldn’t have to pay for another night. Then they changed their minds altogether, took their money back, but a few minutes later returned and checked in after negotiating an additional discount.
During the night, they asked for one more pillow because the ones provided were supposedly too small. Then, in the morning, the cameras suddenly showed that there weren’t 2 people staying in the room, but 3.
When I brought an extra set of bed linens and asked why they hadn’t said right away that there were 3 of them, they answered sheepishly, “Sorry... We were scared.” In 2 days, they’re scheduled to check out at 12 p.m., which I’ve already reminded them about twice.
- I work at a small hotel in a quiet town. Once, a woman stayed with us for 2 weeks. She was always quiet and never shared any details about her trip, even though guests usually enjoy talking about themselves and sharing stories from their lives.
One evening she came in absolutely glowing, and you could tell she was bursting to share her joy. It turned out that for those entire 2 weeks, she had been trying to get approval to become the guardian of 2 children from a children’s home.
I will never forget the happiness in her eyes when she brought them to our hotel, just a few hours before taking them to their new home and their new family.
Received this from guests at a hotel I work in as service staff. They had a beautiful chocolate labrador named Dirk who I was very openly and completely in love with. Inside was a 5€ tip, but honestly even if it wasn’t it wouldn’t matter, it made my day and made me feel like my work matters.
- I worked at a hotel. My shift landed on New Year’s Eve. I had a coworker. The hotel had set up a festive buffet for the guests. My coworker suggested that at midnight he meet up with his buddies at a club until 3, and when he came back, I could head out. I agreed.
Midnight arrives. Only a few guests came down for dinner. I was handling everything just fine on my own. But suddenly, 4 Indian guests came in. They were staying at the hotel. Then their friends started showing up from outside: first there were 9 of them, then 15, and then around 20.
Before long, the hotel had turned into the set of an Indian movie. They turned on traditional songs, started dancing, and had a great time. Closer to 1:30 a.m., they began heading out, off to keep exploring the city at night.
- One time, a guest checked into our hotel. He was an ordinary guy with a bald head. He surprised us with one request. He wanted hair shampoo brought to him every evening. What did he need it for?
One day, a housekeeper decided to ask him directly. We were stunned when he explained that he was asking for the shampoo for his wife, who loved that particular scent — the one you can only find at our hotel. What a caring husband!
I had to work double shifts on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day this year. One of the guests at my hotel brought me a Christmas gift. Made me smile!
I looked up this box of chocolates online. This is a $50 box of chocolates! I’m floored! This is likely the only gift I get this year and I’m literally in tears over it.
I’ve felt like I wasn’t worth anything to anyone in so long and this has made me feel more special than anything in as long as I can remember. It was probably a fleeting thought to this sweet lady but it has definitely made my day.
- I work at a country hotel. There are trampolines outside for guests. I was heading home from work at 3 a.m. I look over and see someone jumping on a trampoline.
I know there are only 2 families staying at the hotel, and they’re definitely asleep. I come closer — it’s the housekeepers!
- I work at the reception desk, and we have cameras, including one at the entrance. I was watching a woman for 20 minutes.
First, she lingered by the door for a long time, touched the walls, searched for something, then stepped back to the middle of the porch — and the show began. She leaned this way and that, stuck out one leg, tossed her head, her hair blowing in the wind (deep winter, 14°F, windy), posing one way, then another — and smiling with all 32 teeth...
I was already thinking: did someone send a spy our way? Nope. Selfies. She was taking selfies.
