20 First Love Stories — Some Ended in Three Days, Some Are Still Going After 20 Years

First love has its own logic. A boy plays a game he hates every day because the girl he likes lives next to the field. A girl unscrews every bottle cap in the house to give to a boy who collects them. Someone sends a screenshot of a song to a person they haven’t spoken to in twenty years, and the conversation picks up exactly where it left off.

The people in these first love stories remember everything: the notes passed in class, the terrible plans that fell apart in spectacular ways, the moments so small they have no right to still be so vivid.

  • I was 17 and head over heels for a guy in my class. He was always hanging around me but never asked me out. Then one day he said, “Liv, can I have a photo of you? One where you’re by yourself.” I thought, this is it!
A week later, I stopped by his place to borrow a textbook and saw my face on a game piece. It turned out he and his little brother had made up a game and assigned each character to someone they knew.
“So who am I?” I asked. “The Queen.” I was already melting when he added, “She’s the strongest, and she bosses everyone around.” I’ve been bossing him around for 20 years now.
Bright Side
  • I was in the car when a song popped up in my recommendations, the one I’ll always associate with my first love. I sent him a screenshot, and we laughed about how it’s been over 20 years. And yes, we’re still on good terms.

Love is a funny thing: you go to the store for something, then you can’t leave because you’ve fallen for the cashier.

I first saw my future wife at a big supermarket where we both worked at the time. She was at one of the registers, and she literally stopped me in my tracks. I knew right away she was the one. But I was too shy to talk to her for a long time, so I just kept hanging around her register.
Gradually we got to know each other, and about a year later, we started dating. We’ve been through a lot and almost broke up a couple of times, but we’re still together. This September, we celebrated our 21st anniversary, and we’re raising 3 kids.

  • I met my first real love at 29. Before that, things just never seemed to work out for me. I felt I was too boring. I wasn’t too pretty, didn’t go out, avoided emotional ups and downs, because stability is what brings me peace.
I thought that I was nothing like the wild girl men fall for at first sight. But then one day, a wonderful guy came into my life. And everything fell into place.
  • When my sister dated her future husband, he once found a gold chain in the grass. And he gave it to her. The only thing was, the chain was mine: I had lost it and spent several days looking for it without any luck. My sister recognized it right away because of one distinctive feature.

Happiness is when time flies, and you want to hold your loved one closer and closer.

We’ve been a couple since high school, and we moved in together almost right after graduation. We’ve been in love for 13 years now.

  • Some older kids started hanging out in our neighborhood, and I really liked one of them.
I decided to wow him with my beauty and how “grown-up” I was: I put on makeup, teased my hair, and wore my mom’s heels, with cotton balls stuffed in the toes, and a gold wristwatch. The plan was to act like I was waiting for someone, then ask him if he’d seen a guy who looked a lot like him.
I went outside, walked around, and checked my watch a few times, while the older kids kept looking at me. I gathered what was left of my courage, marched toward them, and immediately fell flat on my face. Then I ran home.
For a long time after that, I kept looking over my shoulder whenever I was near our building.
  • When I was 5, my parents and I went to a vacation resort. There, I met a boy named Ron, who was 4. I liked him so much that later I named my parrot after him.

It’s wonderful to know that 2 decades have passed since we met, yet there’s more and more to smile about.

Our eyes met at a school dance, and for several songs, we just kept looking at each other across the dance floor. And then a slow song came on... That was almost 20 years ago, but our dance together keeps getting better. She’s my other half, my happiness, and my love at first sight.

  • I adored Draco Malfoy and was always reading fanfiction about him and Hermione. On social media, I found a guy from another neighborhood in my city and fell for him at first sight because he looked like Draco. In his photos, he was a tall, athletic platinum blond, and we even had the same taste in music.
I messaged him first, we started talking, and soon he asked me out. I showed up to meet him, and there was a guy who was about 4 feet 11 inches tall with a very high-pitched voice. I had never fallen out of love so quickly. But he really was blond.
  • Back in school, around fourth or fifth grade, I had a crush on a boy. At the time, he was dating my sister. Many years went by, and he married a woman with the same name as my sister.
Now they’re our neighbors. And my husband has the same name as that boy from school. These days, our families are friends.

When time flies, but love only grows stronger

We met when she was finishing high school. It’s been 13 years since then.

  • Years later, I finally found the courage to tell my high school crush how I felt. I even wrote a story about it on my page, worrying that she might be upset by my awkward writing and untimely confession.
At our next class reunion, I asked whether she was upset with me. She said that back then she had been thinking about completely different boys, but that she would remember me for the rest of her life and was happy to be the first person I fell in love with. She also thanked me for the way I wrote about her, my feelings, and her youth.
We don’t run into each other often now, but whenever we do, there is still a warm feeling between us.
  • My husband and I have a long, complicated history. It all began with our first love in school and a long-distance relationship. Then there was a long break, other relationships, and his first marriage. Later, he came back into my life and kept me guessing for several years.
In the end, we accepted each other as we are, let go, and opened up. I’ve now been happily married for 7 years, and we’re raising our beloved little girl. Sometimes, a happy relationship truly is the result of a long journey and personal growth.

Sometimes you look at couples who’ve been together for decades and realize love really is a fountain of youth.

2007, high school, 10th grade. And this is already 2024.

  • In second grade, I really liked my classmate Samantha from the very first day. One day, I worked up the courage to offer to carry her schoolbag after class. To me, it was practically the same as declaring my love, and Samantha handed me her bag with a smile.
We walked along, talking, laughing, and discussing everything under the sun. Along the way, I climbed an apple tree to treat her to some small tart apples, and then I saw that Samantha was climbing up after me too.
We sat on the branches, feeding each other apples and laughing at our smudged faces. It remains one of the brightest moments of my childhood, and ever since then, I’ve never looked down on childhood crushes.
  • In high school, a new student joined our class, and I had a quiet crush on him. One day, I was passing notes with another classmate and mentioned that I liked the new guy. He was really surprised: it turned out that the new guy liked me too, and everyone around us already knew it.
They arranged for us to meet so we could talk privately, and afterward, we started dating. The next day, I came to school and thought, “What if it was all just a dream?” But in the coatroom, my friend immediately asked, “So, are you two dating now?!”
Later, we found out that our dads had gone to school together years ago, and our grandmothers had lived in the same building.

When you finally worked up the courage and asked a girl to dance at the school dance:

In the first photo, we’re both 10. Back then, we had no idea we’d become a family one day. Now we’ve been officially married for 10 years, and we’re raising triplets.

  • My first crush was a boy in my preschool class. He was a curly-haired, blue-eyed blond and a real troublemaker. He was always getting scolded, and I felt sorry for him. His last name was McCarron, so everyone called him “Macaroni.”
  • I was given the phone number of my first girlfriend from my distant youth. I never forgot her, even though decades had passed, distance had separated us, and we each have our own family now.
We talked for an hour, then another hour, and afterward kept texting. She understood me, listened without interrupting, and offered advice about the challenges I was facing — it felt as though she had been near me all those years, watching my life unfold. I remembered her as a slender, fair-haired girl, our parks, walks, and get-togethers.
It turned out that we both remembered how, back in preschool, we would walk hand in hand with our moms. I almost ruined everything with the question: “So does that mean we used the same potties?” She replied, “Yep,” and laughed just as she had half a century ago, like a little bell.
