40 Years Later: 10 Couples Then and Now, Including Parents Who Recreated Their Honeymoon Photo

At every wedding I’ve photographed, one couple married for decades stayed for the last slow song. They always asked for one photo “like our first one,” and they always remembered the pose better than the year. These 10 couples took their photos decades apart, from a honeymoon picture recreated 40 years later to a wedding anniversary 55 years after the wedding day.

Married at 19 and 21, Photographed While Dating and Again 48 Years Later

“My parents have been married for 48 years today.”

That bottom picture is ~3 years old and the top was taken while they were dating so yeah, about 48 years.

Mom was 19 and dad was 21 when they got married.

Mom is 68 and Dad is 70.

They have succeeded and are the epitome of everything I hope to become one day.

Mom’s 21st Birthday in 1988 and the Same Spot 28 Years Later, With Dad Dressed as His Young Self

“My parents on my mum’s 21st birthday (1988) and in the same spot 28 years later (2016). They’re going on 31 years together this May! (Fyi — my dad’s dressed as his young self in the 2016 recreation — he’s actually bald now!)”

40 Years After “You Wanna Boogie?”, in the Same Pose Under a Tree

“My parents celebrate their 40th Anniversary today. Some things never change. [Then and Now]”

They met in a bar called ’The Lower Level’ and his first words to here were ’You wanna Boogie?’. If that isn’t the start to a great love story, I don’t know what is.

She made her wedding dress also.

From the author:

My grandparents have recreated their wedding photo on the same church steps every ten years since 1966. The steps have been repainted, the church got a ramp, and my grandfather’s suit has been let out twice. The pose hasn’t changed once. My grandmother says that’s the only part that has to match.

Parents Who Recreated Their Honeymoon Photo 40 Years Later, in the Same Clothes

“My parents recreated their honeymoon picture 40 years later.”

They were married in 1967 and took the second photo in 2007. Now 50+ years.

All original clothes and purse. We grew up with them in the “dress up” trunk. She couldn’t find the original hat, though. She’s a fashionista.

A little less spring in my dad’s step, especially.

A Wedding on November 7, 1968, and the 55th Anniversary

“My parents at their wedding on 7 November 1968 and their 55 years anniversary”

They’re not so sweet and innocent as they appear 😉

On the Flight to Vegas to Get Married, and Almost 30 Years and 5 Kids Later

“My hubby and I on flight to Vegas to get married vs almost 30 years later and 5 kids 🤗”

Together Since 8th Grade: High School in 1970 and 47 Years of Marriage

“My parents in high school (1970) and now. They’ve been together since 8th grade, and married for 47 years.”

From the author:
Sam and I have exactly one photo from the day we met: carrying a couch up three flights of stairs for a friend. Sam is at the heavy end, and I’m laughing because he just told me to lift with my legs while doing the opposite. We’ve agreed to recreate it in 25 years.

College Sweethearts in 1981, Married 42 Years, and Still Waiting for a “Big Decision”

“Me and my wife (then girlfriend) in college in 1981 and a few months ago. Married 42 years”

I used to joke that when we first got married we agreed that I’d make all the big decisions and she’d make the small ones, and that I’m still waiting for a big one to come along.

A 1972 Wedding Photo and 50 Years Later, With a Mom Who Was Always Saving Animals

“My parents wedding photo from 1972. Celebrated 50 years this year”

She was always saving animals. She is a great Mom!

She is very beautiful to this day.

Great-Great-Grandparents on Their Wedding Day in 1867 and 50 Years Later

“My great great grandparents on their wedding day (1867) and 50 years later (1917)”

We are fortunate that my grandmother saved many photos and took great care of them.

The last couple on this list never knew their photos would end up side by side a century and a half later. Somebody saved them. That’s what weddings taught me: a love story only turns into a pair like this if someone keeps the first photo.

Do you have a photo of your parents or grandparents from the year they met, and have they ever recreated it? Tell us in the comments.
