A California Neighbor’s Small Act of Kindness Proves That Four Words Can Change a Single Mom’s Whole Life

Not all acts of kindness make a sound, but they do leave a forever-lasting impression. That is what happened to Bethany Renfree. A single mom of 3 from Jackson, California. A neighbor’s unexpected note to her changed the entire direction of her life.
Bethany Renfree was 20 years old when she and her three daughters moved into a low-income apartment in Jackson, California. Her twins were 18 months old. Her youngest was just one month old. As a single mom, her life was tiring and exhausting in the way that early motherhood can be. Especially when you’re doing everything entirely on your own.

I think that’s what makes this story so touching. Someone saw a struggling mom and helped without making her feel ashamed or asking for anything in return. What do you think?
One morning, Renfree realized her kitchen sink was piled high with pots, pans, and dishes. Burnt, greasy, stacked on top of each other. “These pots were caked in grease and burnt because I actually didn’t really know how to cook very well at that time,” she shared. “So I’d always be burning our pans with eggs or other things.”
She looked at the twins in their high chairs. Cheeks covered in jelly. And in the moment, she couldn’t cope with everything she had to do. “I just couldn’t bring myself to do those dishes,” she revealed honestly. “And I couldn’t look at them any longer. It was a reminder of how overwhelmed I felt in my own life.”

So she did what she could think of in the moment to feel less cluttered. She grabbed a garbage bag and filled it with every dirty dish in the apartment. Then she dragged it outside to throw it in the trash. The trash bin was already overflowing, so she kept the bag beside it.
When she came back home with her girls, she stumbled onto a box sitting at her door in the dark. She brought it in and was surprised to open it. “It was my pots and pans. They were shining and sparkling and all our dishes were in there. And it was all clean,” Renfree remembered. “And a little note popped out, a handwritten note on a yellow piece of paper: ’I’ve been there before, you will make it, I promise you.’”
She never found out who left them. To this day, she doesn’t know which neighbor walked out to the trash, pulled out a bag of burnt, greasy pots and pans, washed every single one, dried them, packed them carefully in a box, and left them at her door without knocking or even leaving a name.
She assumes it was one of the other single mothers in the building. “If I saw her today, I would thank her for showing me that we are not alone. And we are not bad mothers, even in our hardest moments. We are surrounded by kindness and understanding. And I am so grateful to have learned that lesson so early on in motherhood.”
