In 2021, Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. From an early break-up to a record-breaking wedding, the couple managed to create a beautiful family together. And like every long-lasting couple, they have their own secrets behind their strong and happy marriage.

We at Bright Side love when a fairytale story comes to life, so we chose 11 facts and stories about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage that will show how powerful their relationship truly is.

1. They were roommates in college.

Prince William and Kate Middleton met each other in 2001, while both attended the University of St Andrews. But rumor has it that it wasn’t until 2002 when Prince William saw Middleton walking down the runway in a sheer dress that his heart was first stolen by her. They began dating in 2003 and moved in together, sharing a flat with 2 other friends.

2. They broke up before tying the knot.

Sometimes we might need to go our separate ways before realizing we want to spend the rest of our lives with someone. And for Prince William and Kate Middleton, this scenario was no different. In 2007, the Duke broke up with Kate because he was having doubts about the relationship and needed some space.

And even though she felt sad about the separation, luckily it didn’t last long for them. Months later, in 2008, the couple was already seen together again. And from then on, they never spent more time apart.

3. They were best friends from the beginning.

Being best friends with your loved one is a good relationship foundation that Prince William believed in from the start. In an interview, he said that being friends first with Kate was a massive advantage and things began to roll out from there.

4. They secretly got engaged before announcing it to the public.

Just like any love birds, they wanted to have that special engagement moment. A month before announcing their engagement to the public, Prince William proposed to Middleton on a trip to Kenya. “We had a little private time away together with some friends, and I just decided it was the right time,” said Prince William.

5. Their wedding is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding was easily the wedding of the decade. In April 2011, the 1,900 guests that attended the wedding at Westminster Abbey in London weren’t the only ones that witnessed the ceremony, as it was heavily broadcast throughout the world. With its 72 million online streams, it was listed in the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records for the record of “Most Live Streams for a Single Event.”

6. They have to follow strict rules as a royal couple.

Newlyweds are often seen showing their love in public, but that can’t be the case for Prince William and Kate Middleton. As a couple, they have to follow strict royal protocol, which includes the prohibition of public displays of affection. They also can’t eat shellfish, can’t use nicknames, and have a specific way of drinking tea.

7. They thrived together through Kate Middleton’s difficult pregnancies.

The couple has already tripled their love with the birth of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, but this ride wasn’t easy for Kate. During her first pregnancy, it was discovered that she suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which can cause severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and dehydration.

8. They share a good sense of humor.

A couple that laughs together, stays together. Their jokes were caught on camera several times, including when the Duke and Duchess were at a Taste of Norfolk event. When surrounded by a group of chefs, Kate said: “William has to put up with my cooking most of the time,” to which he jokingly replied: “It’s the reason I’m so skinny.”

9. They share hobbies.

They were outed as a couple on a ski trip in 2004 but the couple’s love for this sport didn’t end that year. They constantly go skiing together and in 2016, they even took Prince George and Princess Charlotte on their first ski trip vacation.

10. The couple added Princess Charlotte in the line of succession.

Until 2011, males took preference over females in the line to the British throne, but the birth of Princess Charlotte shook things up. Now with the Perth Agreement, no women should move down the succession line when a younger brother is born, which was the case with Prince William and Kate’s children. Prince Louis, born in 2018, was placed behind his sister and is now fifth in the line of succession.

11. They are planning on having another child.

Although they have 3 beautiful kids, having a fourth child is reportedly in the couple’s near future. Kate’s desire to have a big family inspired Prince William to try to have one more kid. Their plan was already agreed to by the Queen, who is overjoyed by the news.
