14 Grandmas Whose Handmade Crafts Turned a Baby Shower, a New Nursery, and Halloween Into Family Moments to Remember

2 winters ago, when my grandma came to visit us for a month, I couldn’t spend much time with her because I was buried in work. One day she came into my room with her crochet hook and yarn and asked me if she could just sit. I said yes, of course. She sat beside me and crocheted while I worked on my computer. It became a daily routine.
I thought she was making something for herself. She kept it in a tote bag and only pulled out a few rows at a time. But she actually made me a purple butterfly cardigan. I love it so much. Now whenever I wear it, it reminds me of her sitting in my room for weeks and putting in so much time and effort into making the cardigan for me.

Store-bought gifts might be polished and perfect, but nothing beats something made by Grandma’s own hands. These handmade knitting and crochet hobby creations took time, patience, and plenty of love, and turned out so adorable that they completely stole the show.

Finally finished after having to start over. Giving to my grand baby...

My first crochet project and first doll ❤️ I finally got a grand baby so I wanted to make her something special.

My gorgeous grand baby on the blanket I made by knitting

  • I crocheted a piggie blanket for my unborn granddaughter. I’d only ever knitted scarves before, so learning to crochet a piggie face took me 11 weeks and four skeins of pink yarn.
My DIL held it up at the baby shower and laughed, “There is no way I’m giving this thing to the baby.” I asked her what was wrong with it. She said in front of everyone, “I’m sorry but it is just wayyyy tooo adorable!! I love it so much, I want to keep it for myself.” 😂
Honestly, I was ready to be offended for about two seconds before realizing that was the best compliment anyone ever gave me. I’m currently working on crocheting a bigger one for her.

Dress for my cute grand daughter

My poor grand baby’s head was too big for the hat that came with her Halloween costume. Grandma to the rescue!

  • My grandma tried to teach me crochet when I was 15. Mostly because she was tired of me complaining that I was bored during summer visits. I never really got the hang of it.
Last year, when I was 27 and recovering from surgery, she mailed me a blue scarf she made herself, and some leftover yarn and a crochet hook in case I wanted to try again. Since I had plenty of time, I started practicing with videos online.
By Christmas, I managed to make her a set of coasters. They weren’t perfect, but she loved them so much that she told me she uses them under her tea mug every day. Funny how now thanks to her kindness and encouragement, crafts and crochet have become my hobby now.

  • When I was 19, I worked weekends at a little bookstore in Portland. My coworker Denise, who was 53, always brought her knitting or craft projects to our lunch breaks.
One day, I mentioned that my younger brother Noah had lost his favorite dino hat on the school bus and refused to wear any of the replacements Mom bought him. She asked me how old he was. I told her.
12 days later, Denise handed me a green knitted hat with a tiny dinosaur stitched on the front. She made it in her spare time. I tried to pay her, but she wouldn’t take a cent. She said her hobby was making things for people who needed a little cheering up or kindness.
Noah wore that hat everyday until he outgrew it.
