“Happy Early Halloween,” These Cooking Ideas Are Set to Fill Your Home Kitchen With the Real Halloween Spirit This October 2026

Halloween baking has become a genuine competitive sport, and not just online. Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship just kicked off its 12th season with amateur and professional bakers competing to build the most creative, most festive desserts of the year. That same Halloween spirit is showing up in home kitchens everywhere this October. But not like competition footage, only real people baking pumpkin cakes, meringue ghosts and Oreo brownies for their own families and neighbors.
Here are 10 Halloween desserts filling homes with that true October spirit this year, including two full recipes to try yourself at home, plus some genuinely impressive homemade creations people have shared online. These prove that the best part of Halloween spirit still starts in your kitchen.
“Halloween cookie box.”
Cookie: ½ cup (115 g) butter, ¾ cup (150 g) sugar, 1 egg, 1½ cups (190 g) flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp cinnamon, a pinch of salt. For the coating, mix 3 tbsp sugar with 1 tsp cinnamon.
Spiders: a small portion of black cocoa dough (the one from recipe 1 works), melted dark chocolate or black candy melts, and candy eyes.
- Roll the dough into balls, coat them in cinnamon sugar, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 9–10 minutes.
- Separately, bake small black cocoa balls, one bigger and one smaller per spider, for about 8 minutes.
- While the cookies are still warm, press the spider body and head on top.
- Once cool, pipe on the legs with melted chocolate and stick on the candy eyes.
“Halloween slime tart”

- 30 g unsalted butter
- Neon green gel food coloring
Ganache

- 60 ml whipping cream (35%)
- 30 g unsalted butter
- Pinch of salt
- 25 g white chocolate, for the web
Steps
- Blend the Oreos into fine crumbs, then mix in the butter and salt. Press into a 20 cm tart pan and freeze.
- Bring the condensed milk and butter to a boil over low heat, stirring constantly. Cool for 5 minutes, stir in the green coloring, and pour into the crust. Chill for 1 hour.
- Melt the white chocolate and put it in a piping bag.
- Gently melt the dark chocolate, cream, butter, and salt together until smooth. Pour over the slime layer and tilt the pan to spread it.
- Pipe a white chocolate spiral from the center outward. Drag a toothpick from the center to the edge in several directions to make a web.
- Chill for 1 hour. Slice with a hot knife and serve at room temperature.

“Had an early Halloween party yesterday. This is a brownie with marzipan pumpkins on top.”
She made meringues, and every single one looks like it just heard good news.
Someone baked a tray of Halloween cookies, and they’re all having the best day of their lives.
“Happy Halloween!! I made spooky sugar cookies to celebrate.”
“Made Halloween cookies for my friends and coworkers.”
My mother-in-law visited uninvited on Halloween. She handed the kids candy. Midway through the night, she followed me upstairs. She closed the bedroom door. “I shouldn’t say anything, but be very careful with him tonight. It’s the anniversary of the day his father left, the same night, twenty years ago. He’s never told you the real story, and every year around this time he gets like this, and I don’t think he even knows why anymore.”
I didn’t say anything to my husband right away, not with the kids still out trick-or-treating and the doorbell going off every ten minutes. So I kept handing out candy on autopilot, watching him a little closer than usual, noticing now how quiet he’d gotten all evening.
Once the house finally went quiet, kids in bed, I suggested we make his dad’s old chili recipe together, the one he always claims is “the only good thing” he remembers from before his father left. Thought cooking side by side might loosen something up that a straight conversation on the couch never could. Handed him the knife, let him take the lead on it, same way he always does.
Halfway through browning the meat, I asked gently what tonight actually meant to him. He didn’t answer right away, just kept stirring. Then he set the spoon down and admitted his father had walked out on Halloween night when he was 12, mid-trick-or-treating, car just gone from the driveway when they got back. Said he’d been telling people his dad was “gone” for years because it was easier than explaining a man who chose that specific night to disappear, and that the chili recipe was the last real thing he had left of him, which was maybe why he still made it every single Halloween without ever once saying why.
We let that pot simmer twice as long as it needed to that night, talking longer than we had in years, two full bowls going cold on the counter before either of us remembered to actually eat. He called his father the following week, first real conversation in almost two decades. Doesn’t mean everything’s fixed. It means he finally said the real story out loud instead of letting one bad Halloween, and one inherited recipe, keep carrying the weight alone.
