The key to happiness is to stop comparing ourselves to others and celebrate our bodies and the features that make us so unique and special. This is what American Idol winner and TV host Kelly Clarkson understood after years of trying to change herself to fit what others wanted from her. Today, the 40-year-old mother of 2 is living her best life, and her journey to loving her body is ultra-inspiring, to say the least.

She was always criticized for her physique.

In 2002, the then-20-year-old Kelly Clarkson rose to fame after winning the mega-hit TV show, American Idol. Thanks to her incredible voice and powerful charm, she was able to captivate the hearts of millions of people, however, behind the scenes, the young singer was going through a tough time.

Clarkson explained that she was really thin when she was on the show, however, she was still the biggest girl among the other contestants, and consequently, “people would say things” to her. But the star was determined not to let these observations get to her. She said, “Luckily, I am super confident, so I’ve never had a problem with shutting people down.”

She ended up feeling insecure.

Even though she has a strong personality, being in the public eye and having to regularly hear comments about her body size made Clarkson succumb to the pressure of losing weight. She even admitted to having an eating disorder for a short period in 2007. And despite losing weight, the singer explained that she felt unhappy at the time. She noted, “I was really thin and not super healthy because I just was worn out.”

She learned to accept and love her body.

And even though her weight had been fluctuating for years, Clarkson eventually realized that what really matters is her own opinion about her physique, not what others thought of her. And in 2017, she declared, “I don’t obsess about my weight.” Instead, the singer decided to focus on her career and make the best of her life.

Nevertheless, Clarkson noted, “I wish I had a better metabolism.” But she then added, “You always want what someone else has.” And she proudly realizes that “someone else probably wishes they could walk into a room and make friends with everyone” as she can.

She’s now thriving more than ever before.

Ever since she started to feel comfortable in her own skin, things have been working out amazingly well for Clarkson. In 2018, the singer became a coach on the hit singing reality competition, The Voice. She noted, “I got on the number one television show at my heaviest point.”

Moreover, Clarkson fully recognizes and appreciates the fact that she was hired by the show’s producers because of her “really raw and real” personality rather than for her appearance.

She found her path and she’s sticking to it.

Clarkson admitted, “It’s when I’m fat that I’m happy.” And her journey reminds us that we all have different body shapes and types and that we need to find what works best for us instead of constantly comparing ourselves to others.

Furthermore, the mama of 2 is also embracing the concept of aging and plans on resisting any pressures to undergo cosmetic procedures as time goes by, especially given that she is regularly on camera on her very own talk show. The 40-year-old hopes to set an example for others of what it means to accept your body and age gracefully. She said, “I hope people see that this is what it looks like, this is how you look when you get older.”

What do you think of Kelly Clarkson’s journey? Do you agree that we all have different bodies and that we should not get influenced by the standards set by the media?
