11 Ways You Can Repair Damaged Bleached Hair
Based on a study that was conducted in 2011, bleach (hydrogen peroxide) is an ingredient that manages to increase the stains on our hair and helps decompose the melanin that it naturally has. Swelling is the first consequence and that’s why damaged bleached hair looks so voluminous. Also, the lack of melanin makes your hair look colorless and it changes to reddish or yellowish tones based on what color the hair dye was.
Bright Side found 11 of the most effective ways to repair damaged hair that can be done by either a professional hairdresser or by yourself at home.
1. Get a Keratin treatment.
The first solution that most salons will offer for damaged bleached hair is a keratin treatment. These treatments add keratin back to your hair. First, a serum is applied to your hair and then it is infused into your damaged locks with a flat iron. A keratin treatment can last between one and 2 months, depending on how often you wash your hair.
2. Custom-blended treatments based on your hair’s needs.
Most salon treatments aren’t custom made to meet each person’s unique hair needs. However, companies like Kerastase have created a formula that allows a professional to diagnose your hair and mix the ingredients that will help revitalize your hair. This procedure allows you to continue following all your hair habits and concentrate on how it can make your hair look fresh and shiny.
3. Use avocado for deep hair conditioning.
Bleached damaged hair is in desperate need of conditioning. What you need to do is create your own hair mask by mixing one ripe avocado with one egg yolk. Apply it to wet hair, massage the scalp for a couple of minutes, and leave it on for 20 minutes. Then, wash your hair or just rinse it with lukewarm water.
4. Try the mayonnaise treatment.
Mayonnaise has many benefits when it comes to hair repair. Due to the fact that it’s rich in amino acids and oils, it conditions your hair naturally and effectively. All you need to do is apply a small portion of the product to wet hair the same way that you would apply your regular conditioner. Then, you should wear a shower cap to entrap all the heat and leave it on for 15 minutes. After rinsing it off, you will see that your hair will feel a lot lighter and will look shinier.
5. Apply protective formulas before bleaching.
Just because your hair is damaged, it doesn’t mean that you can’t bleach it again after a certain period of time. Only this time, you should ask your hairdresser to apply a protective product while bleaching your hair. A very popular procedure includes the application of the protective product during a chemical treatment (like bleaching). First, a heat protective solution is mixed into the bleaching product and then a different solution is applied after rinsing out and conditioning the hair.
6. Ask your hairdresser for a great professional shampoo.
This procedure is similar to the previous one, only it is applied in only one stage of the bleaching process. The professional shampoo (like Inphenom) is applied to the middle of your head when your hair is wet after the bleaching process is done. Your hairdresser will apply it the first time, but you can continue to use it for the next few days at home. It guarantees that its effects will last for many weeks to come.
7. Massage your scalp with some butter.
You might not realize it, but you already have products in your house that can help you treat damaged hair. One of these products in butter. You can apply a small portion to your scalp and start massaging for a few minutes. Cover your head with a shower cap and let the butter sit for 30 minutes. Rinse it off and shampoo your hair and you will see an instant shine.
8. Make a mixture of your shampoo and an egg.
Eggs (especially egg whites) have been considered a terrific remedy for hair repair since the 11th century. The yolk is rich in protein, something that your hair lacks if it has been damaged by bleach. Also, the lecithin that eggs have can deeply moisturize your dry hair. What you can do is mix an egg with your shampoo and wash your hair with the mixture. After 2 weeks of following this method, you will see a big difference in the moisture level of your hair.
9. Bananas are more than just a great fruit to eat.
Like avocados, bananas are extremely beneficial for damaged hair. They are rich in fiber, vitamins, and proteins, all of which your hair desperately needs. What you need to do is mix a ripe banana with some honey, castor oil, and yogurt (optional). Avoid applying the mask to your roots and keep it on for 30 minutes. Then, you can wash your hair with shampoo.
10. Go natural with coconut oil.
If hair salon treatments are too pricey for you, you can try a homemade formula. All you need to do is mix some pure coconut oil with olive oil and almond oil. A study showed that coconut oil reduces protein loss, which is the main reason why your hair looks dull and dry. It also prevents the damage that comes from combing and brushing. Because of its lauric acid, it is able to enrich the hair with vitamins and minerals.
11. Remember that you will need to get rid of your old habits.
Bleaching your hair is not the only reason that it can become damaged. Using too much heat on your hair with a hair dryer or straightener or washing it on a daily basis are 2 bad habits that you should avoid. Try using lukewarm water when washing your hair and remember to trim it at least 2 times a year. Also, you should avoid overbrushing since it can weaken the follicles and stop hair growth.
Before your hair reaches the point where it needs repair, you should be able to notice the signs that indicate there is a problem. These signs include:
- Taking a long time for your hair to dry after washing it.
- You see a lot of hair left on your hairbrush after brushing.
- Your hair gets tangled all the time when it’s dry.
- The oils and hair masks you apply do absolutely nothing for the extreme dryness.
- If you notice all of these signs, then it’s a clear indication that your hair needs repair.
