A 70-Year-Old Grandma Cleaned 52 Beaches In One Year and Showed It Is Never Too Late to Take Care of Our Planet

Earth is our only home, but sometimes we seem to forget this. It’s a gift to all of us and we need to take care of it, but we don’t always succeed. But some people are true heroes who are really concerned with saving the planet, caring for its future, and doing their best to maintain its breathtaking beauty.
Pat Smith, a citizen of Cornwall, UK, noticed the problem of pollution and made her own huge contribution to solve it. Bright Side is inspired and wants to share this experience with you.
Pat Smith, a 70-year-old grandmother from the UK, saw a documentary about plastic pollution and got really bothered about the problem. She couldn't sleep that night and when she woke up the next morning, she decided to do something about it. So in 2018 (and that was the beginning of it), she set a challenge for herself to clean up one beach per week.
The people in her hometown of Cornwall supported her idea and, along with some volunteers and her grandchildren, Pat Smith fulfilled her resolution and cleaned up 52 beaches of Cornwall in 2018. But this is not the end of the story - she's continued on with her mission to make the world a better place.
Pat Smith has also launched a campaign called The Final Straw. Her mission is to raise awareness of the uselessness and harm of plastic straws and to make her hometown Cornwall and the rest of the world plastic straw-free.
Drinking straws are a clear example of completely unnecessary single use plastic in huge quantities. It all ends up in landfills and oceans, killing marine life. Every plastic straw will outlive every person living on the planet right now.
Even little things can unexpectedly cause global problems and we are all responsible for this. But we can also help solve it. Pat Smith has proven that there's always a way to make a contribution and change a situation for the best.
Are you trying to control your plastic consumption? Are you ready to join Pat Smith and get rid of plastic straws too? Share your thoughts in comments.
