10 Real Moments That Teach Us Why a Heart With Compassion Still Brings Happiness

I paid for college doing nails at a small salon, and the client I still think about was 81 and had never had a manicure in her life. She asked for “something pink, but not too pink,” then pointed at the brightest bottle on the shelf. These 12 moms and grandmas sat down for a manicure late in life, several of them for the very first time, and I recognized every one of them from my old salon chair.
Kara, a nail technician in Paisley, Scotland, had a gran in her chair who knew exactly what she wanted. First came a soft nude build to strengthen her natural nails. Then a deep berry red, with tiny white dots added by hand, and her rings went right back on. And the reason for the new set? Something to show off to the girls at bingo.
“She’s not a regular gran, she’s a cool gran. ‘New nails to show off to the girls at the bingo’”
At 74, a Punjabi mum sat down for the first nail appointment of her life. She worked through the whole fan of color samples before she chose, then smiled through the entire appointment while her hands were done. Her daughter filmed it, and found herself both happy and emotional watching something she had always taken for granted happen to her mum for the very first time.
“Something as simple as getting your nails done felt so normal to me, but for my mum at 74, it was her first time ever experiencing it. It just reminded me that before she was my mum, before all the responsibility, sacrifice and looking after everyone else... she was just a girl too.”
“94 Y/o Grandma back again for another moody purple chrome set”
She’s back again and she wanted something witchy and moody.
She decided to try another mysterious pose for you.
She gives all the nice people kisses and hugs!!
The family jewel
[A reader said she looks a decade younger than 94.] She says you are her favorite and that she will change her nails today to get more compliments LOL
Grandma wanted to do Barbie nails this week.
Grandma wanted to be super girlie on this set with a pink cateye.
Next set she wants the one I did with the blue chrome in pic 4 I think. She always wants cool nails.
I took my grandma to the manicure with me, suddenly she tears up and says, “This is my first manicure ever.” She is 84, raised 6 kids + me and always had several jobs and worked so hard. I’m so grateful to share these small but amazing moments with her.
A granddaughter drove her grandma to the nail salon, and Grandma came along in a yellow cardigan with little embroidered flowers. She sat at the manicure table while the nail tech worked, then held her hands out for a close-up: soft, pale pink polish, her rings back on. The granddaughter’s explanation for the trip was simple. It’s Grandma’s first time being a girl, too.
“the sweetest human”
Jessica’s fiancé has a grandmother who is 90, and she had never had a set of nails done. So Jessica sat her down at the nail table, shaped long almond tips and painted them a soft pink while Grandma watched every step. At 90, she was wearing her very first set.
“Her first nail set ever, so happy she’s getting to experience this!”
“My grandma is 89, but she always becomes a happy little girl whenever I paint her nails. This last time I finally convinced her to try a glitter polish, and she loved it!”
I’m definitely trying to spend as much time with her as I can.
She is absolutely adorable and the sweetest lady on this planet!
[Holo polish next?] I actually already did! One time I used a purple linear holo and she loved watching it sparkle.
[Tell her she has beautiful hands.] I will! I’m sure it’ll make her happy to hear.
“My 75-year-old dad over here showing off his mani on Facebook for the first time!”
A few months ago I took my collection over to my mom because she wanted to see them. We asked my dad if he wanted his painted. He said he wanted matte black like I had, but just his thumb.
A few weeks later he asked me to bring it back to do them all. Then he asked if I would order him his own next time I ordered. Today was the first time he showed off his own mani. He said sometimes he redoes them every day because he finds it relaxing[.] I am going to have to keep him stocked.
He has always been a big hippy with a flair. He has had long hair for most of my life (except a weird phase in the 80s), and was never big on people fitting their gender roles. I feel like it never occurred to him that he would enjoy it.
My mother offers him hers, too, but she is ALL SPARKLE. If one of his great granddaughters asked, I am pretty sure he would go for it.
From the author:
Before the salon, there was our kitchen table. My three older sisters painted each other’s nails there every Sunday night, and I got whatever bottle was almost empty. Mom never joined in. She always said she had dishes. Last Christmas the four of us finally sat her down at that same table, two sisters per hand. It looked like four different people did it, because four different people did.
At 60, Romy’s mother had her nails done for the very first time, and she made sure nobody missed it. She showed them off, reaching into the fridge, smoothing a placemat, opening the front door and holding a drink at the table outside. Every ordinary chore became a little hand-modeling session, and her daughter filmed each one.
“Une première fois à tout [There’s a first time for everything]”
For the last 20 years, Mai painted her nails one color only: red. Her granddaughter Danielle was determined to change that before Easter Sunday. At the salon, Mai got the full pampering, and her favorite part turned out to be the hand massage. Then came the big moment. Mai looked over the bottles and tried a new color, a soft pale pink.
“Mai is ready for Easter Sunday now! Love pampering her when I can.”
“I made Christmas nails for my grandma! My mom helped with the application”
My grandma’s requests were for something gaudy but also elegant. Christmas themed but not too on the nose and also something that’s uniquely my own design. Everything is hand painted.
I was actually on the phone with her yesterday just to ask how the nails were holding up and heard the moment she noticed the chameleon flakes. She ‘cursed’ me for pointing them out to her because she said she won’t be able to stop staring at them now.
She’s without a doubt obsessed.
She insisted on taking my mom and I out to eat so she could show off her nails.
I spent almost a full day making a surprise set for my grandma for Christmas. The roses are hand sculpted
I was on the phone with her a few days ago just to ask how her nails were holding up and she said she was super happy with how they turned out and she couldn’t wait to figure out what she wanted for her next set. I really wanted to tell her that I have her next set ready and boxed as her Christmas gift, no input needed since she’s indecisive anyways, but I didn’t.
So yeah. I had to listen to her rant in excitement about wanting another nail set while suppressing the urge to tell her I have it ready.
“Grandma (94) still likes me to do her nails every couple of weeks. She’s always game to try out my newest polishes.”
Last time I did Grandma’s nails for her birthday and she chose [a neon pink]. I think she wanted to give my Mom and Aunt’s a little shock with that neon
I don’t have kids but I’m being the best darn Aunt I can be so maybe someone will still hang out with me when I’m old.
I do treasure the time I get. I actually moved 3 min away from her at the end of last year and I see her lots. It’s been really wonderful.
A first manicure at 80 isn’t really about the polish. It’s about finally letting yourself sit still for half an hour while somebody takes care of your hands, the same hands that spent decades taking care of everybody else.
