10 Real Moments That Teach Us Why a Heart With Compassion Still Brings Happiness

We always remember the ones who helped us when we were having a bad day, even if they had no idea how bad it really was. Someone who noticed we were struggling and quietly made things easier with compassion and empathy. A person who could have walked past but didn’t.
These moments are easy to overlook while they’re happening, but years later, they’re often the ones we remember most. Here are 10 stories about ordinary people who noticed someone needed a little help and decided to do something about it.

  • I was driving home from a job interview. I had been out of work for several months due to Hurricane Florence hitting my area very badly. I drove a really old beat up car. While stopped at a stop light I thought the person in front of me was going as soon as the light turned green but they didn’t and I rear ended them.
We both pulled over and she looked at the scratch on her very nice car and said to me that she wasn’t worried about filing any insurance claims or having me pay to fix it. Instead, she said she wanted a hug. I was at a very low point and it was a hug I really needed.
She could probably tell I couldn’t afford to fix the scratch and her kindness meant a lot to me. I think about that all the time.
  • It was a sweltering hot day (for England anyway), I had my crying 2-year-old and my screaming new born in tow at 18yrs old and not a penny to my name. I wasn’t in a very good home situation and was trying to keep us all from the house.
I really needed to feed the baby, so poked my head into a little cafe and asked if I could please breastfeed there in the corner, and that I’d leave right after (being a teen mum, I was really ashamed of my situation, but was also really embarrassed to breastfeed in public).
The lady ran over to me, arms open, said of course, that she was delighted to see a young mum feeding her baby herself, and asked if I’d like anything. I said no, and she double checked. I was embarrassed to say no because I was essentially taking up space but I had no money at all.
A few minutes in she came over with herbal iced tea, cold bottles of water, sandwiches and a cake for my son. I said we were ok, and she winked and said I needed to keep my calories up and that it was on the house.
I was so grateful I could have cried and being hydrated and fed meant we could stay away from home just a little longer that day. Whenever I think back, I am grateful. She didn’t know what that meant to me. But it was a lot more than she thought.
  • Last summer, was on my way to Lisbon. Because the bus driver did not tell me they changed the route I ended up in the wrong station, so I had to figure out a way there, and fast. Asked around, no more shuttle buses at that hour.
People did not seem to want hitchhike, taxi drivers were asking for way too much money to even get there. All seemed lost, so I just caught a train to the nearest city. Called the airport, they said they were boarding and couldn’t do anything about it, so I started crying.
A railway worker saw me, asked me what was wrong and offered to drive me there (he was going off that stop too). We got to the airport in 1/3 the time a bus would take me. Still missed the flight, but I’ll never forget it.

  • I was getting an Uber back from a mall in Miami and the driver’s tire popped. He asked us if we wanted to stay or he would cancel and we would get a new driver.
We decided he’s going to need some more money for a new tire and he tried to replace the flat. He was having difficulty doing it with his hand that was missing a few fingers. He ended up putting the jack under the rear axle and tried to lift the car like that.
I told him where it was supposed to go and offered help. He accepted and it took a while, but we finally got it done and went back to our hotel.
He was very thankful that we helped him and didn’t cancel the ride because he wasn’t exactly in a good situation with money. We gave him a giant tip for the trip and sent him on his way.
  • I moved from another country and at the time my English was still bad. I was having a hard time meeting people. I felt embarrassed for no reason.
My old neighbor noticed I only kept to myself mostly. She told me there’s no need to feel embarrassed. Most people speak only one language and I am smart enough to converse in two.
She asked me if I’d be interested in teaching her Korean and she could teach me English in exchange. It was a beautiful setup haha. We gave each other like 50 words to learn per week. Laughed at our mistakes.
She really made me feel so much better. Like, I belonged and mattered. She attempted to learn a new language just to make me feel less alone. It’s been two years now. I love her like my mom.

  • I remember being an elementary school misfit and not having any real friends. I also ended up in the hospital on an almost yearly basis because of my medical condition messing with my immune system.
But once one of my favourite teachers surprised me and came to visit me in the hospital. She did bring the big card that the whole class signed (even though half of them probably didn’t even remember my name) but she also brought her own personal card that she wrote so many nice things inside of about me (and had clearly chosen with me in mind).
She also gave me two books (one about dogs and one about sharks — my two obsessions at that time) and some healthy snacks to help ease my stomach. She absolutely didn’t have to do any of that and I don’t think I realized at the time what a big deal it was.
But as an adult I’ve come to truly appreciate it, especially since I’m now on my way to my own career as a school speech language pathologist.
  • college student studying illustration came into my art supply store. She said she was looking for a particular kind of canvas and some other materials.
When she counted her money she was $20 short. She said she had a deadline and looked visibly shaken. She reminded me of my own ever-forgetful daughter so I told her she could have the paper and pay me back within a week or so. Her face lit up in the most beautiful smile when she said, “Thank you so much!”
She came two days later to pay the balance. I wasn’t even expecting it.

  • One time I drove a car down from NY to SC for my younger brother and he paid for my flight back. I did this on my 21st Birthday btw it just happened to be the only day we were both free.
On the way back it was a connecting flight so I had to take a flight to ATL then transfer to NY. On the way to ATL I sat next to this woman and I was ready to put my headphones and listen to my audio book.
She just started talking to me, introduced herself and we had a chat. She offered me free drinks for the entire flight since she told me to get whatever I wanted. "I have all these delta points I have to spend."
It was only like 45 minutes but it was great. We exchanged stories and talked the whole flight. She was heading to New Orleans, then to Texas to see her son who was a pilot.
I'll never forget that time, it was so interesting. People always tell me I'm easy to talk to and my family tells me I just talk to about everyone.
  • I was in middle school and I had a really strict music teacher. One day I went to school with nothing to eat in the morning so I’d basically be 4 hours without eating. But he saw that I wasn’t eating so he gave me 2 euros and told me to buy a cake or something from the cafe at the end of the street.
So I bought a really cheap cake that was still enough to fill me up. Since I was really hungry I started eating inside the shop and just as I was leaving the uneaten half of my cake fell and the lady just said for me not to worry and she gave me another cake!!
When I got back to school I went to give my teacher the rest of the money that was left and he just told me to keep the change!!! That was an amazing and happy day. I also had the best grade in the oral test for music class :)
  • I took my 83yo mom to dinner. She has hearing loss so she speaks loudly. A man sitting right next to our table sighed, “Why can’t old people just stay home?” He called the waiter and told him to move us.
My heart sank when the waiter came to me and whispered, “Ma’am, sorry but currently we don’t have a policy to kick out impolite customers. We are working on it.” It took me a second to realize he was talking about the man lol. It made me chuckle.
He then said, “We apologize on his behalf. To make up for it, we’d like to invite you and your mom to our private cabin dining room.”
As we were leaving, the man smirked thinking we were getting kicked out because of him. But instead, the waiter got us into the luxury cabin and a free meal. Thank you, rude stranger.
