11 Actors Who Turned Out to Be a Different Height Than We Imagined
Sometimes it happens that an actor is perfect for a role except for one thing — their height. In this case, moviemakers have to use different tricks to make their characters look like they are described in the script.
Robert De Niro, The Intern
Anne Hathaway is 5 feet 8 inches tall, and her co-star Robert De Niro is 5 feet 9 inches tall. But the problem was that her character was wearing high heels during the entire movie, so in the scenes where Anne and Robert were together, they had to look like in the photo on the right which was taken at the movie premiere. But for some unknown reason, the moviemakers decided that De Niro had to look taller than Hathaway in the movie.
Margot Robbie, Bombshell
Nicole Kidman (5 feet 11 inches) and Charlize Theron (5 feet 10 inches) are among the tallest Hollywood actresses. So, it’s no wonder that their co-stars are often made to look taller than they really are, to look good on screen. And this is precisely what the makers of the drama Bombshell did to Margot Robbie, who’s 5 feet 6 inches tall.
Jude Law, Genius
Another Nicole Kidman co-star who had to “grow” in height was Jude Law. In real life, the actor, who is 5 feet 10 inches tall, is almost an inch shorter than Nicole Kidman. But in the movie Genius, he looks taller than her.
Robert De Niro, The Irishman
In the movie The Irishman, Robert De Niro (5 feet 9 inches) portrays real-life gangster Frank Sheeran, who used to be a big and tall man (6 feet 4 inches). To look like his character, De Niro had to wear towering platforms. Thanks to these, the actor was much taller than his co-stars, including Al Pacino (5 feet 6 inches).
Helena Bonham Carter, Suffragette
Helena Bonham Carter is 5 inches shorter than her Suffragette co-star Carey Mulligan. But the moviemakers managed to reduce their height difference to make it minimal.
Rooney Mara, Lion
In the drama Lion, Rooney Mara looks shorter than her on-screen boyfriend, Dev Patel. But still, their height difference is not as significant as it is in real life. In real life, Dev Patel is 9 inches taller than Rooney.
Natalie Portman, Thor: Love and Thunder
Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth are another on-screen couple who have a significant height difference. To make sure the actors, who are 5 feet 3 inches and 6 feet 3 inches tall respectively, looked well together, they built a path that was one foot off the ground on which Portman had to walk during their scenes together.
Woody Harrelson, True Detective
We don’t know what tricks the makers of the series True Detective used, but they managed to level the main characters’ height difference because Matthew McConaughey is 5 feet 113/4 inches tall, and Woody Harrelson is 5 feet 9 inches tall.
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Aviator
Throughout the movie, Cate Blanchett, who portrayed the amazing Katharine Hepburn, changed many gorgeous outfits. And almost all of them, she matched with high heels — you can clearly see them in some scenes. In heels, Cate, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall, should have been almost as tall as Leonardo DiCaprio, whose height is 6 foot.
The 2 stills above imply that Leo had to wear platform shoes. The height of his character, Howard Hughes, was 6 feet 4 inches. And as we know, Martin Scorsese is famous for his attention to detail, and he also used this trick in the movie The Irishman.
James McAvoy, Becoming Jane
In real life, Anne Hathaway (5 feet 8 inches) and James McAvoy (5 feet 9 inches) are almost equally tall. But the creators of the romantic drama Becoming Jane made it look like McAvoy was significantly taller than her.
Penn Badgley, Gossip Girl
Even though Blake Lively (5 feet 10 inches) was slightly taller than Penn Badgley (5 feet 8.5 inches), this didn’t stop them from becoming one of the most popular TV couples. Thanks to the proper camera angle, the creators of the series managed to level the actors’ height difference, even though Lively used to wear high heels on set.
