11 Handmade Creations That Teach Us Why Simple Hobbies Bring Happiness to Quiet Hearts

There is something so satisfying and wholesome about making something with your own hands. Watching a concept slowly become real. You don’t need to be exceptionally talented, you just need to start somewhere and watch it slowly transform your life. These 11 moments are of people who found friendship, confidence, purpose or simply a few good hours through ordinary hobbies like knitting, pottery, baking, woodworking, crocheting, and sewing.

  • I lost my home in a house fire. It was a huge loss to say the least. A few weeks later a group of women from my neighborhood showed up with a quilt. Some I was friends with, some I was meeting for the first time. Each one had made one section. Some had embroidered sweet, encouraging words into theirs. It’s still the most perfect gift I’ve ever received. I will never forget their compassion and generosity.
  • I was in my 60s and still knitting long after my children grew up and my grandchildren moved away. At some point, I realized I was making more blankets than anyone in my family could possibly use. So I started taking them to a local shelter near my house. I asked what colors people liked and made each blanket a little different. I made about 40 over 2 years. I never met most of the people who received them, and I was fine with that. I liked knowing that while I sat there knitting, someone else was going to be all wrapped and cozy in what I was making.

I am a keen knitter and use the leftover yarn from my projects to crochet circular cat blankets for the local cat rescue. Each cat has its own blanket and when they are rehomed their blanket goes withem, helping them to settle in.

I CANNOT handle the cuteness! Made this for my bestie’s baby and omg the back view...If you have any babies in your life, make them one of these!!

  • One of my students gave me an origami crane for my birthday. He was 10. He told me cranes were supposed to bring good luck and that he made one for me because I had been having a hard year. A very thoughtful young man. I put the crane on my desk. A few weeks later, it was falling apart and kinda unraveling, so he made me another one. He did the same thing for his fellow classmates who he thought were struggling. I still keep one of his cranes in my iPhone cover.

I am very impressed by the little boy. Please remember to tell him to remain like this.

  • I retired from the same job I had spent 30 years doing. I was miserable for the first few months because I suddenly had no idea what to do with myself. Too much time on my hands and not much to do. My daughter signed me up for a pottery class. I hesitated but eventually went. Made a awful, funny-looking bowl and made the whole class laugh. I myself laughed like that after a long, long time. That was a year ago. My house is now full of crooked bowls, cups and plates. I give most of them away as random gifts. I also add a personalized handwritten note. My daughter says I seem more like myself now than I did when she was growing up. She might be right.

My MIL assembled this from thrift store jewelry & brooches she’s collected over the years.

  • Every winter, my grandfather disappeared into his workshop for hours. We knew he was making something, but he never told us what. At Christmas, he gave each of us a carved wooden piece. Mine was a small capybara because I had been obsessed with them that year. My cousins got different things based on whatever they liked. It was adorable that he not only paid attention to our likes, but he also spent days making us those gifts. After he passed, we found unfinished pieces in his workshop and failed pieces he discarded. We divided them among ourselves. I have kept them all on my fireplace. It makes no sense I know but they make me feel safe.
  • Someone left homemade jam on my porch. No note. No name. Just a jar sitting there in the morning. I eventually found out it was my neighbor. She grew more fruit than she could use. She liked making jam, so she started giving it away. I asked why she didn’t knock. She said, “I like making it. You people eating it is a bonus. No need to make small talks.” That sounded exactly like her. I still get a jar whenever she has a good harvest.

I finished making my graduation dress!! Wanted to brag a little bit :p

  • My uncle and aunt were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, but the party was tooooo far away for me to attend. I decided to make them something nice instead. I embroidered their names, their wedding date and a small picture of their old house. It took me weeks. I knew it was not perfect, but I sent it anyway. My cousin later told me they loved it so much that they hung the frame in their bedroom.
  • My mom is a single mother of 6. She works so hard to keep us all fed. For my graduation, she altered her only nice dress and made me a new one by hand. Then I saw she came to the ceremony in a worn-out skirt with holes in it. I felt bad for her, like I made things harder for her. Minutes later, I overheard a teacher laugh and say, “Poor people need to stop breeding.” I rolled my eyes but kept quiet at the moment. When it was my turn to speak, I took the mic and said, “Sorry but I need everyone to first see what I’m wearing. My mom sewed this by hand in a week. She worked two jobs to get me to this stage and she gave me the only nice thing she owned so I could stand here looking nice. She’s sitting at the back in the clothes that might be old, but she’s still the most beautiful and hardworking woman in the room. I don’t know what your mother did for your graduation. I know what mine did for mine and I will do everything I can to repay her kindness.” My mom cried and hugged me. The same teacher had to clap for us.

You are beautiful and amazing
Your mum is amazing and beautiful.
Total respect to you both

You should be proud of your mom, I know you were the best dress girl there. You see your homemade dress was made from love. No designer can say that. Keep that dress to show your daughter one day and tell her the sacrifice that was made from it

Your Mom is one in a million! As for that RUDE teacher, she needs to get a clue about life & love!

That would be more moving if she has just 2 kids. The issue is not about poverty, its having half dozen kids when you can't afford

She's a wonderful person and mom. By this comment it is quite obvious that you are absolutely not capable of that

Reply

Who are you to judge? You have no idea why she is a single mother of 6. It's quite possible her husband passed away.

Oops. We didn't mean to delete it. It just happened.

Great job for standing up and thanking your beautiful mother for all that she has done for you.

From one poor girl to another, I wish you and your mother continued success. I remember everything that my mother did for me. I ate when she didn't. "Go, girl, go!"

Well this teacher just needs to take a course in compassion and class. What a nasty B

Reply

Hope the teacher is ashamed of herself and offered an apology, also should be reported

Reply

She needed to leave a teacher that mocks poor people does not deserve to teach

I don't understand how is possibile to be a single mom of six. Why don't use the word widow, if she is one? And if she is not, how come she has six kids and no partner?

Shhh! The comment is asleep.

If someone feels the need to share his story on the internet, it automatically makes it everyone's business! What strange people in here!

Reply

Because there's never been a man in the history of humanity that abandoned his wife so that she had to raise children on her own. You can't really be THAT naive, Maria. But you COULD be much kinder, if you just put in a tiny bit of effort.

Kind like you, you mean? I made a comment on a situation. You made a personal attact against me. This is what kindess mean in your vocabulary? Strange language it is, this language of yours!

We need more people in the world with compassion and empathy and just kindness in general. Being good to another human being because it's the right way to be in the right thing to do not because you get something out of it like fame or money or whatever the case just genuinely being good people to each other as well as making more handmade things

People like the teacher that made that awful remark need to keep their mouth shut instead of saying hurtful things
