A study accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal Psychological Science, covered by the Association for Psychological Science, found that a controlled dose of fear triggers a genuine physiological “sweet spot,” measurable through heart rate, right where enjoyment peaks.
Crocheters seem to have found their own version of it for this October, working through spooky patterns, cozy Halloween cardigans and sweaters, full blankets in classic orange and black yarn, and genuinely eerie amigurumi. My mom crocheted me a pumpkin costume. I screamed at her, “This looks cheap!” and refused to wear it. I wore a store bought costume and had the worst Halloween of my life. This year she’s gone. I found that pumpkin costume today and cried because inside the pocket was the receipt for the store-bought one, still folded up small, the exact one I made her buy instead.

Thirty years and she never once brought it up. Showed my sister, expecting her to understand why I was a wreck over it. She just said, “Why does it matter now? You can’t apologize to a receipt.” Maybe she’s right. I still can’t put it down and I miss my mom.
