13 Celebrities Who Broke Social Standards by Not Wearing a White Dress to Their Wedding
Celebrity weddings have captured magazines’ attention time and again. Everybody talks about them on social media and they even inspire fans to copy their weddings and celebrations. That’s because when a celebrity throws a party, nothing can match it. It’s always thrilling and original, sometimes even unconventional. For example, a few celebrities discarded the typical white dress ideal and went for something a bit more eccentric.
Today, Bright Side wants to share with you 13 dresses that celebrities wore to their weddings, almost as a joyful statement against the traditional white dress.
1. Gwen Stefani
No Doubt’s lead singer, Gwen Stefani, married Gavin Rossdale in 2002. This musical power couple decided that celebrating their wedding in their own way was the way to go, so Stefani said “no” to the white dress. Thanks to its carefully detailed design, everybody loved the pink dress that Gwen Stefani picked for the occasion. Despite the couple’s divorce in 2016, the style became a trend and is still a great reference point when talking about the most creative wedding dresses.
2. Kaley Cuoco
Launched to fame after playing Penny on The Big Bang Theory, Kaley Cuoco married professional tennis player Ryan Sweeting in 2013. On this occasion, she wore a non-traditional pink wedding dress designed by Vera Wang. Cuoco happily shared the pictures of her wedding with the world on her official Instagram account.
3. Lydia Hearst
In 2016, actress, model, and blogger Lydia Hearst married comedian Chris Hardwick. You might as well call their wedding a conventional celebration, but there was one element that clearly did not match that description: the wedding dress. Hearst wore an ombré dress with pink and magenta shades that highlighted her figure.
4. Poppy Delevingne
Model and actress Poppy Delevingne celebrated her wedding in 2014 with an embroidered wedding dress designed by Pucci. She picked the dress herself for her second wedding that took place in Morocco — with the same groom.
5. Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake’s marriage has lasted 8 years now. Their wedding pictures had the whole world buzzing thanks to the Internet and magazine covers — not only because we’re talking about one of the most charismatic Hollywood couples here — but also because Biel’s unusual pink wedding dress stole the show. Giambattista Valli designed the eye-catching dress.
6. Shenae Grimes
Shenae Grimes and musician Josh Beech married in England. The actress who played Annie Wilson on the Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off wore a black dress with dark grey elements. It was truly a statement against the white dresses of traditional brides.
7. Kat Von D
Not many women would come up with the idea of wearing red to her wedding, but Kat Von D did and she totally pulled it off. In 2018, the tattoo artist and Mexican-American businesswoman married Rafael Reyes in a red wedding dress. The decorations were red and magenta as well, perfectly matching her dress.
8. Julianne Moore
Actress Julianne Moore married director Bart Freundlich in 2003. Julianne Moore wore a lilac dress with a beautiful neckline designed by Prada. But the groom also didn’t shy away from non-traditional garb. Freundlich wore an off-white suit together with a lilac tie to match his wife-to-be. The ceremony was small and intimate and it took place at a mutual friend’s house.
9. Elizabeth Taylor
It’s well known that Elizabeth Taylor married 8 different times, 2 of which were with the same man, actor Richard Burton. For her fifth wedding, the actress wore a short yellow dress and a tiara made of flowers.
10. Mandy Moore
Wearing a very simple but elegant dress, Mandy Moore walked down the aisle in 2018 to meet her groom, a singer-songwriter named Taylor Goldsmith. It was Moore herself who shared the wedding pictures on her official Instagram account even though the ceremony was held away from public view. She had a tiered, layered dress with beads and floral designs embroidered at her waist.
11. Kristen Bell
If you’re following Kristen Bell and her husband Dax Shepard on Instagram, you probably already know that the last thing you’d expect to find at their wedding would be traditional elements. In 2014, the Hollywood couple married in a very plain way, just by going to the courthouse to legally bind themselves to each other. Instead of the classic white dress, Bell wore a black get-up in coordination with Dax’s black suit to show that the importance of marriage doesn’t lie in abundance.
12. Amber Tamblyn
Amber Tamblyn married comedian David Cross in a ceremony that took place at the shore of a beautiful lake in 2012. She wore a yellow dress and as she walked down the aisle on her father’s arm, they were both barefoot.
13. Alison Pill
Alison Pill married actor Joshua Leonard in 2015. She chose a vintage dress for the occasion with an unexpected but very fresh canary yellow color. Only close friends and family were invited to the wedding.
