19 Movie Wedding Dresses That Will Live on Forever in Fashion History

When we watch a romantic film or TV series, we, as viewers, expect the main characters to fall in love with each other and get married. And there are also some movies where the vows taken at the altar are just the beginning of the story. Either way, watching wedding scenes on screen is always more interesting if the costume designers did their jobs right.

Carrie, Sex and the City (2008)

When preparing for the important day, Carrie tries on dresses from different designers and finally decides on one created by Vivienne Westwood. In the series and the films about 4 fashionable friends, there are many wedding dresses that appear on camera, but this one is probably our favorite.

Adaline, The Age of Adaline (2015)

Adaline’s dress is a great representation of the fashion trends of the ’30s: a satin dress decorated with lace, the thin gloves, and a big veil that all the girls of the time dreamt about.

Victoria, The Young Victoria (2009)

The gorgeous wedding dress Queen Victoria once wore was recreated by costume designers as accurately as possible. Of course, critics loved it, which is why the movie was awarded with an Oscar for “Best Costume Design.”

Maggie, Runaway Bride (1999)

Julia Roberts’s character tries on different white dresses throughout the entire film but the most memorable one was the dress she wore at her last wedding. The classic satin dress with open shoulders was created by designer Amsale Aberra.

Jo, Funny Face (1957)

The simple-looking wedding dress from designer Hubert de Givenchy highlighted the slender figure of Audrey Hepburn and made it appear airier. This was a great wedding dress if you wanted to dance comfortably at your wedding.

Katniss, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

The look of Katniss’s white dress with the crazy lace and futuristic corset was created by an Indonesian designer named Tex Saverio. Even though she doesn’t wear the dress for the wedding, we just couldn’t ignore it.

Blair, Gossip Girl (2007–2012)

The blue dress Blair wore at her wedding was chosen by the costume designer from the collection of Elie Saab. The costume designer said, “It needed to feel like old-world glamour meets contemporary high fashion.”

Mili, Muñeca Brava (1998–1999)

Mili decided to wear a dress for her wedding that totally reflected her rebellious temper. The dress that was short in the front and long in the back made the look more romantic, yet still very comfortable.

Padmé, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)

Natalie Portman’s dress consisted of underwear, a cloak, and a veil. It looks quite heavy with old-fashioned lace and beading. The designer of the costume, Trisha Biggar, said that the dress took hours of difficult handiwork.

Mia, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, (2004)

A royal wedding dress usually has lace on the top and a long hem so that children can hold it while the bride walks down the aisle. This is exactly like the dress Mia wore in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Rose, Downton Abbey (2010–2015)

The wedding dress chosen for Lady Rose was found in a vintage store. Luckily, it was in great condition and was brought straight to set. The dress adorned with sequins and beads was probably one of the most impressive dresses shown in Downton Abbey.

Tracy, High Society (1956)

Grace Kelly’s character wore a silk wedding dress with many layers and embroidered flowers. She also wore a big hat and short gloves.

Anastasia, Fifty Shades Freed (2018)

The lace, the open shoulders, and the long hem are what you can see on a wedding dress designed by Monique Lhuillier. The designer said, “So I wanted to create something traditional but with a modern twist and really make sure it encompassed Anastasia’s personality.”

Phoebe, Charmed (1998–2006)

In the show, Phoebe and her sisters get to wear wedding dresses several times. But the one Phoebe is wearing in the photo is our favorite — it highlights her body, and the corset and skirt are decorated with beads.

Schatze, How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)

Lauren Bacall portrayed a gold digger that wore a mermaid-silhouette dress: when the skirt gets wider the lower it goes. The choice of accessories was amazing — there were pearls on her hat, her neck, and her wrist.

Mary, About Time (2013)

Rachel McAdams’ character proved that a red wedding dress can be beautiful. It may look simple without any decorative accessories but thanks to the color, the bride is easily visible.

Angélique, Angélique, Marquise des Anges (1964)

Angélique’s open shoulder wedding dress teamed with a large headpiece is a timeless beauty any new bride would love to have.

Scarlett, Gone With the Wind (1939)

The costume designer for Gone With the Wind chose an old-fashioned dress for Scarlett, even though she was quite trendy. It was done to show that she wore her mother’s dress in a hurry, which is why it was so different from what she usually preferred.

Liv, Bride Wars (2009)

Designer Vera Wang knows a thing or 2 about wedding dresses. For the character played by Kate Hudson, she chose a big dress with a low waist and a heart-shaped neckline. The purple belt made the look even more elegant.
