Gardening starts small. A seed, a cutting, a sad discounted plant from a clearance corner that you don’t entirely know how to save. Growing plants and flowers is one of those hobbies that teaches you things without trying to: how to wait, how to notice a new leaf like it’s an event, how to find small joy in a bloom that’s been building for months.

36 years + 1 day ago today my parents were gifted this pothos when I was born.

This year my roses are blooming to the max.

I’ve had the toughest year in my life. Neglected all my Hoyas during winter. Come spring and all my Hoyas explode with blooms. However my Hoya Mathilde wins. She is crazy! Love love love her!

A story about how saving one Ficus turned into a full-fledged hobby

  • I was walking around the mall when I spotted a little corner with discount plants. There was a very sad-looking Ficus standing there. I don’t know what came over me, but I bought it.
    At home, I took it out of the soil and realized it had been overwatered, and almost all of its roots had rotted. I cleaned it up and placed it in water so it could grow new roots. When the time came, I planted it in special soil, and the plant immediately celebrated by growing a new leaf.
    That’s when I got completely drawn into it all, so I went out and bought more plants, and then more after that. Long story short, I now have 16 of them.

Hollyhocks: my new obsession

One of my oldest ionantha clusters. It has been hanging so long it’s formed into a perfect sphere.

I can see why people grow so many! I have endless cut flowers in the house!

Wanted to share my mom’s Hoya Compacta. She’s had this beast for a good 15 years and I have taken so many cuttings from it yet it still touches the ground.

They wanted to plant only cucumbers and tomatoes, but nature had other plans.

  • We used our garden only for growing vegetables. We never planted flowers. But last year, a sunflower suddenly popped up — apparently, a seed had accidentally landed in the soil.
    I loved that bright splash of color so much that I planted a few more seeds nearby. Then I thought those sunflowers needed a little contrast, so I planted some other flowers next to them.
    After that, I realized the area needed to be defined somehow. I walked around the neighborhood to see how the neighbors were making their flower beds. And I liked so many beautiful flowers that I wanted to have every single one of them myself.
    So far, I have 2 flower beds, but next year I’m planning to make at least 4.

My grandad spent 6 weeks on his garden. He is 72 years old from yesterday, he is very in touch with nature, he loves his flowers and prides his garden. He is really cool!

In 2015 l was grieving over my recent divorce..feeling very depressed and down..
One day, as l was driving no where
In particular, l saw a lady dragging what looked to be a dead rubber plant to the curb.
I drove up, and said to her " that plant looks exactly how l feel right now."
Long story short, l ended up taking the plant home with me..
Six months passed, and with my love and care, the plant grew to 5 foot in height, healthy and obviously happy.
Unfortunately, that next week l had a family emergency in England and had to leave for two weeks.
My neighbour was a young college girl and seemed to be responsible, so l left my beloved plant in her care.
This was in the colder part of the year, so l asked her not to leave my plant in a draught, or chilly area.
Imagine my heart break
when after my two week trip to England, l arrived back to find my plant standing outside on the open deck frozen solid, with no sign of life whatsoever..☹️
I immediately burst into tears, at that sad sad sight.
Remembering all my love and care, to bring that plant back to life, l was distraught and devastated.
Both of us were so broken that day l rescued her from the side of the road..
Only those with a gardeners spirit will understand..
So sad. .☹️

Here’s what my garden looks like today.

Tropics on your windowsill

  • A friend brought me an amazing mango from her vacation. I had never tasted one so sweet and juicy. So I decided to plant the pit.
    When the sprout emerged, I almost danced with joy. I started reading up on how to grow it, and it turned out to be no simple task, since mango is a tropical plant. But that’s okay.
    I bought a grow light for extra lighting and an indoor greenhouse. The mango is growing and bringing me so much joy!

100% not true, mango trees are huge and need to be pollinated in order to fruit.......plus most countries won't let fruit from other countries through customs......sorry....

We inherited a really vivid blue hydrangea macrophylla when we bought our house 11 years ago. I’ve never seen another hydrangea with such intense coloring, and haven’t been able to identify it. The deep electric glow is hard to reproduce accurately in photos.

My basement sunflowers are incredible.

I grew these!

My queen is becoming more and more glorious. Of all the plants I have, this one is always evolving beyond my imagination. I can’t stop checking on her every day since I got her, simply because of how beautiful she is.

Not a ordinary Ficus

  • Someone left a large Ficus by the dumpster. I immediately rushed over to pick it up, because a tree like that could be sold for a nice profit. I walked up and saw a note taped to it. I read it at home, laughed, and changed my mind about selling it.
    Here’s what it said: “This is Bobby. Please take good care of him. Bobby likes being misted with soft water and listening to classical music. He doesn’t like drafts. He gets gloomy if he’s moved too suddenly.”
    Since he has such a vibrant personality and even a name, he’s staying with me.

No idea where this plant came from. It was a pot of dirt on my deck and then this just started growing. Not sure what it is.

Look at the show this aloe put on for us at work! I have no idea what got into it, since I only watered it once in a while and mostly ignored it.
