20 Gym and Pool Stories That Show the Funniest Moments Always Happen When You’re Trying to Look Your Best

You show up to work out. That’s the plan. And then something happens — something that has nothing to do with your fitness goals and everything to do with the particular comedy that happens when people try very hard to look capable and athletic in front of strangers. The gym has a way of humbling everyone eventually. So does the pool.
These 20 stories about gyms, pools, laughter, and the small joys hiding in every workout prove that the best part of any session isn’t always the exercise.
- I bought some awesome black fitness leggings. They have wide beige mesh panels on the thighs that are supposed to blend in with your skin. I’m squatting with a barbell, feeling like a goddess. Suddenly, I notice the guys around me have strangely frozen in place. The trainer runs over and whispers, “Mary, your pants have ripped. There are huge holes all over your legs!” Turns out that thin skin-toned mesh is completely invisible from a distance. It looked like I was wearing tatters. Now I only wear them for stretching.
- My girlfriend signed up for the gym. During the first session, the trainer asked everyone to choose a comfortable dumbbell weight. One woman picked 15 pounds dumbbells. The trainer asked if they might be too heavy. The woman smiled and said, “No, my husband and I built our house ourselves. I’m used to handing him bricks.”
The village cat got in pretty good shape for summer. He was probably running after mice all spring.
- We have water fountains at our gym. One day, I went to the fountain about 5 times, and this guy happened to head there at the exact same time each time. Halfway there, he would stop, wait for me to drink, and then take a sip himself. By the fourth time, I noticed it and tried to let him go first, but he refused. On the fifth time, I laughed out loud.
- My friend and I decided to start going to the pool together. On the very first day, we ran into 2 gorgeous guys there. My friend immediately got this idea: “We have to start a romance with them!” Honestly, not a bad thought — but how were we supposed to make it happen? She came up with a plan: we’d tell them one of us couldn’t swim and ask them to teach us. And you know what happened? We never saw those guys again! We came to the pool almost every day, looking around for them, but they had completely vanished.
- I bought a super stylish cream-colored swimsuit for the pool. Honestly, it looked runway-ready! I swam a few laps and got out. Then I noticed people couldn’t take their eyes off me. Well, look at me, I’m a star! And then my friend practically flew out of the water, eyes wide as saucers, grabbed my arm, and whispered, “What are you doing?! Your swimsuit is exactly the same color as your skin. Do you realize what people thought?” Of course I realized. Since then, I only wear bright, high-contrast swimsuits. The beige one went straight into the closet.
These funny hair dryers at one of the swimming pools in Germany. They move up and down on rails. It’s not really convenient, but at least they all work.
- This happened to me not too long ago. I ordered myself a stylish fitness top with an unusual cutout. I walk into the locker room and can feel all the girls kind of glancing at me. I went to do my exercises. The janitor kept hovering nearby, looking unsure. Then she came over and said, “Miss, you’re wearing your top backward. I’ve seen girls in ones like that — the front is supposed to be covered, and the back is open. It’s more comfortable to work out that way, and the cutout looks different.” Let me tell you, that was quite the revelation.
- I had a funny moment at the gym too. I used to carry my water bottle everywhere with me and set it down nearby, and then some girl walked over, picked up my bottle, and drank from it. She even gave me a side-eye! Then her friend said something like, “Here’s your water,” and pointed to her half-empty bottle. Long story short, she quickly left, and I had to toss my water bottle.
- My husband is a competitive weightlifter. One day he showed up for practice. There was a 200-pound barbell sitting on the low racks — someone hadn’t put it away. My husband took off the collars and removed one plate from each side. Just then, the owner of the place walked into the gym. The coach went over to him, and they started talking animatedly right next to that very rack. My husband decided to be considerate, not get in their way, and kept taking plates off. From one side of the bar...
Before long, the barbell had had enough of his lack of foresight and smoothly slid to the other side, scattering all the remaining plates that were still on it. How could a grown, experienced man make such a silly mistake? Unless, of course, someone in a push-up swimsuit happened to be walking around in there.
Handy folks turned this garage into a gym. Isn’t it beautiful?
- I bought a bright orange swim cap, the color of a ripe tangerine, for the pool. I was doing freestyle down my lane, feeling pretty pleased with myself. Then the guy in the lane to my right suddenly veered straight toward me and started poking the top of my head with his hand. I popped up out of the water. And he goes, “Oh, I thought you were a buoy! I can’t see a thing without my glasses. I’m so sorry.” That’s when I realized my cap was the exact same color as the buoys on the lane divider. Now I swim right down the center of the lane, farther away from the rope, so no one tries to “dock” with me.
- Once, I grabbed a bottle after a set and chugged about half a liter. Then I looked up and saw a young guy standing in front of me, clearly new there. Then he said pitifully, “That’s my water.” Man, that was so awkward!
- I stepped onto the treadmill and started walking to warm up. I usually do interval cardio: I walk at a brisk pace for a while, then jog, and then switch back to walking. There was hardly anyone in the cardio area, and I took one treadmill out of a whole row of 8. Then some guy came over and got on the machine right next to me, ignoring all the other open spots.
And then he started trying to compete with me on treadmill speed. He was running with loud grunts, sweat pouring off him, droplets flying onto the machine and onto me, but of course he couldn’t let me win. He had to get ahead of me. I kept walking on that treadmill much longer than I usually do. I like to think I helped him set a personal record.
Did you know there are small workout machines like these for little athletes?
- I’m swimming laps in the “fast swim” lane at my own pace. It’s around 6:00 p.m., and the place is packed. A mom and her child are swimming very slowly. A big athletic guy in fins is swimming really fast. An older gentleman is swimming slower than me, but the moment I start to pass him, he kicks it into high gear so I can’t get ahead of him. And this happened several times.
- I haven’t had a boyfriend for a year now. I’m not good at meeting people out on the street. I work on an all-women team. I called my friend because I felt like meeting up, sitting somewhere, and venting about life. She suggested I come pick her up and gave me the address. It turned out to be a gym. I had never seen so many beautiful bodies and smiling faces! My mood soared 100%! The sight sparked a desire in me to become just as attractive, and I joined them without a second thought. 2 months later, I met a cute guy. I didn’t feel like venting about life anymore. I just wanted to enjoy it and soak up happy moments.
- Saturday. Evening. The gym. Not many people around. A woman about 45 was changing next to me after her workout. I had seen her in the fitness area. She was wearing a 2-piece swimsuit under her T-shirt. At first I thought, “Well, okay, maybe she doesn’t have workout underwear for the gym.” I got ready and went to the shower. And then this woman walks into the shower in that same swimsuit. And I’m thinking to myself, “No way, this can’t be happening.” She put on a swim cap and went to the pool (it’s connected to the shower area). Let me clarify: the woman did not rinse off after her workout. She walked into the shower area, put on a swim cap, hung up her towel, and went out to the pool. The only way into the pool is through the shower area. I mean, surely the designers set it up that way for a reason, right? So everyone would shower before the pool and after it. It felt odd to me.
This fluffy muscle guy got a little worn out and lay down to rest.
- I take my child to practice. One boy is brought by his mom. She shows up in a leopard-print bikini, with an updo and curls. I thought, wow, good for her! She’s not glued to her phone! And only a month later did it dawn on me that something was off, because she didn’t swim in the pool at all. After 45 minutes, that same woman, now all dressed up, meets her son and takes him to the shower. Later I noticed that she sat there making eyes at the men the whole time.
The leggings are back in the drawer. The orange cap has been retired. And somewhere, a woman who went to pick up a friend at the gym — and never left — is still there.
