You spend roughly a third of your life at work. Most of that time is accounted for: meetings, emails, deadlines and attempts to achieve work-life balance. And then there’s the other part. The part that doesn’t make it into any report — the fortune cookie that three senior managers played with like children, the cat who manages her own schedule across multiple floors and the man who improvised shoes from printer paper.
These 20 office stories about the moments nobody put on the agenda and the little joys hiding between deadlines prove that the most memorable things about any job are almost never in the job description.

  • We have quite a one-of-a-kind employee. A senior specialist, a man in his forties. Then, in the middle of the workday, his office shoes suddenly fell apart. 10 minutes later, my coworkers and I heard some strange rustling.
    We looked over, and this remarkable person was striding around the office in shoes made from A4 sheets of paper! They looked like tiny boats, secured to his feet with rubber bands. What a character!

Management let an employee bring his dog to work. Now the pup is an intern. He’s paid in treats and regular walks in the park.

  • A coworker and I decided to ask our boss for an air conditioner, because it’s impossible to work like this: it’s hot, the office is small, we have 4 employees sitting there, we work with the public, and there’s always a crowd in the room.
    We made our request, and the boss thought for a moment, then said that equipment purchasing plans are made at the beginning of the year and turned us down. Then, suddenly, like something out of a movie, one of the straps on my sundress ripped, and the top slipped down a little. The boss looked at me and said, “Still no!”
  • My husband and I work in the same industry, where everyone knows everything about everyone. By default, everyone here is “single,” and if, heaven forbid, a married couple shows up (as we did), one person gets fired, while the other isn’t allowed to work in peace.
    My husband and I ended up going on a business trip together, and I made a bet with the women for money that I could kiss him, and he’s the team leader. Naturally, they didn’t believe me, but I gave him a playful kiss right in front of them. He put on an indignant act: “What do you think you’re doing?!” And me? I’m earning money for our family.

This company allows its employees to wear indoor shoes. It’s clear that this is a close-knit team.

But they rarely had them because they sold out fast. So for an entire month, everyone else had salads and pastries, while I had no luck with hot dogs.
    One day, I made a rather dramatic show of being disappointed. Then, at lunch the next day, this young woman brought me an enormous, unbelievably delicious hot dog on a plate. A truly classic one! And she said, “You’ve been driving me crazy! I bought a pack of buns, some carrots, sausages, and sauces, and from now on I’m making your hot dogs for you right here!”
    Words can’t describe how touched I was. So, in return, I had to bring a platter of crepes and some sour cream to work, because she loved crepes. And I happily made them at 6 a.m. before work!

Bella lives in this office building. She chooses which floor to explore each day, which office to have lunch in, and whom to favor with her attention. And everyone brings her treats.

  • When I started my second job, I was absolutely thrilled with my new boss. He was a tall, dark-haired man with a great build, mesmerizing gray eyes, and a velvety voice that sent shivers down my spine.
    I was 20, and I figured he was around 35. Sure, a 15-year age gap is a lot, but not a dealbreaker. And he was such a handsome man! For 6 months, I flirted with him nonstop, while he was kind to me but never made any moves. Oh well, I thought, after all, I’m not exactly a beauty someone like him would take an interest in, sigh...
    Then, 6 months later, it was my boss’s birthday, and I found out it was a milestone one — he had turned 50. I can’t even put into words how stunned I was!
  • A couple of months ago, I got promoted and had to start working closely with a not-so-pleasant person from another department. At first, communication was difficult. The managers of our departments tried to help us get along somehow, but to no avail.
    Then something amazing happened. Last week, he came into my office again to nitpick over some minor nonsense. I took off my headphones, and we started talking. Suddenly, he went quiet, listened for a moment, and said:
    “Is that that band playing?”
    “Yeah.”
    “They’re my favorite band! Have you heard the new single yet?”
    “Of course! It’s incredible!”
    And as if by the wave of a magical musical wand, all the awkwardness between us simply disappeared. What management hadn’t been able to accomplish in 2 months was fixed by one single song. We even agreed to go to the band’s concert together.

My coworker prints all her documents on my printer, and at first I couldn’t figure out why. But then it hit me! Her printer is for other purposes.

  • My husband and I used to work together, but he started seeing his secretary, so I left for a competing company. We ran into each other at an important bid presentation. I was speaking when he shouted with a smirk, “I taught you how to talk like that, but where are the numbers?”

Everything was explained in the most accessible way possible, and we like this approach. We will be signing the contract with them.”
    My ex’s smirk vanished instantly, and quiet chuckles rippled through the room. The executive simply gave me the slightest nod, instantly understanding the context behind his tactless remark. It was such a satisfying victory!

    Then I got distracted, and suddenly the phone rang — they handed me the receiver, and it was the director: “Eve, do you have any more cookies?” I walked in, and there were 3 serious men in management having fun with the fortunes!

  • Our boss is a young, commanding woman who loves creating last-minute evening emergencies: calling people into her office after 6, handing out revisions, and hinting that anyone who wants a good position needs to be willing to give up personal time. Naturally, with no extra pay.
    The next time she called me into her office at 5:45 p.m., I played dumb. I calmly told her that I had no problem staying as late as needed, but there was one issue: my wife knows my salary, knows my entire schedule, and is fully aware of exactly who I’m sitting with in that office.
    And if I start regularly staying late at work with an attractive boss without making any additional money, she’ll have some very specific questions. She’s impulsive and might even come to the office to ask why her husband is spending his evenings with another woman for nothing. And I’d really rather not have scenes like that at work or put management in an awkward position.
    My boss looked at me silently for a few seconds, then let me go home. Ever since then, at exactly 5:55 p.m., she personally ushers me out of her office and reminds me that I’m expected at home. My wife has no idea about this arrangement.
  • I was flying home from a business trip with product samples, and my luggage got lost at the airport! They promised to send it straight to the office first thing in the morning. I texted my coworkers, “Open the suitcase and take out the blue bag.”
    10 minutes later, they sent me a photo of the entire office standing around “my” suitcase, filled with swimsuits, rhinestone dresses, and pink high heels. Well, obviously, it wasn’t my suitcase!   • While I was in college, I went for a job interview. Some woman with this fire in her eyes was telling me that whenever the sales team closes a deal, the department head bangs this gong that hangs in the hallway, and everyone else has to run out and shout some kind of slogan.
    As I was leaving, I happened to run into a girl from my college — it turned out she worked there. She came up to me and said, “Get out of here, they’re all kind of strange. I’m leaving too.” So I got out of there.
  • I had an interview for a legal position at a large company. After we discussed my experience, the HR representative said, “Kristen, what would you do if the office ran out of coffee?” I was taken aback and said I’d probably order some for myself or go down to the coffee shop.
    She replied, “Won’t you ask your coworkers who wants coffee? You’re one team after all.” That’s when I realized the best leadership a new manager can show has nothing to do with their job title and everything to do with kindness.

  • This happened yesterday. I’m sitting in the office, working. A woman who looks completely normal, around 25 to 28, bursts in and says right off the bat:
    “Hire me!”
    “And who are you, and what kind of job are you looking for?”
    “Any good job.”
    Then she starts explaining that she works from home as a hotline operator, but you can’t meet anyone while sitting at home, and she wants to get married. Plus, she enjoys socializing and dressing “more nicely.” Basically, she’s tired of being alone.
    I offered her a warehouse inventory clerk position, and that’s when she said, “But you actually have to work there, and I don’t really want to work hard. I just need money.”
    Everyone who was in the office at the time started laughing, and one of the employees couldn’t hold back, “Wait, that was an option?”
    Anyway, this “unexpected” lady lifted the mood of the entire office.

Such stories don’t get recorded in meeting notes — they get retold at every team lunch for the next five years. That’s what offices actually run on: not the planning meetings, but the stories that happen between them. If yours has produced one worth telling, the comments don’t require an agenda.
