Furniture with a warm family story never grows old.

  • Our family has kept a baby crib for 60 years. I slept in it, my son slept in it, and so did plenty of other little ones we lent it to.
    For the last 30 years, it had been gathering dust in the attic, but with our granddaughter coming to visit, my husband and I decided to bring it back to life. We took it apart, stripped off the old varnish — and the garage instantly filled with the wonderful scent of wood!
    We glued the sides, filled in the chips, and replaced the cracked lower rail. Then we painted everything with safe, eco-friendly paint. The crib looks brand-new, and most importantly, our first granddaughter, our sweet little girl, enjoys sleeping in it now!

This kitchen cupboard is simply unrecognizable after its restoration! I didn’t want to throw it away because it reminds me of my father. Now the cupboard will become a true centerpiece of our home.

  • We were renovating my grandma’s house. My husband wanted to throw out the old sideboard, saying it was out of style, but I decided to paint it instead.
    I started taking the shelves apart and found Grandma’s jewelry box — the one I wasn’t allowed to touch when I was a kid. I opened it, and there was my old music player inside. Grandma was always upset that I’d plug my ears and not listen to her, so she used to hide it from me.
    In the end, I charged the player, and now I’m listening to the playlist I used to listen to when I was a teenager. And, of course, I’m remembering my strict grandma who I loved no matter what.

  • I reupholster furniture. Someone brought me an armchair: not an antique, but not exactly new either. While I was removing the old fabric, a gold ring fell out — it looked incredibly expensive, with large stones. Apparently, it had gotten stuck in the folds at some point.
    After thinking it over, I decided to give it back to the owner of the chair. But she was surprised and said it wasn’t hers. It must have belonged to the previous owners, since she’d bought the chair secondhand. Time to shout, “My precious!”

I bought this sad vanity table and spent 1.5 months sanding it down and removing the old paint. What beauty was hidden underneath!

I bought a Victorian chair in rough shape and decided to restore it. I knew nothing about furniture restoration, but the Internet helped.

Old furniture can become a portal to childhood.

  • I bought an old 1960s vanity for next to nothing, planning to give it a makeover. At home, I removed the back panel of the mirror so I could coat it with new varnish, and an envelope with the inscription “Do not open!” fell out of it.
    Of course, I couldn’t help myself and opened it. Inside were children’s notes from 1982 about Olivia and Sally’s “friendship secrets,” along with Sally’s sweet, innocent confession of love for a classmate named Sam.
    I took a photo of the find and posted it in a local community group. Just a couple of hours later, a woman messaged me. It turned out the vanity had belonged to her grandmother, and she had hidden the notes there when she was 10!
    The most amazing part is that she eventually married that very Sam, and they’ve been happily together for many years. We met up, I gave her the envelope with the notes, and she gave me a box of chocolates, and we parted delighted.
    I restored the vanity, and now it reminds me of true love!

Sometimes you can just marvel at how a heavy, gloomy wall unit can transform into light, stylish furniture.

You look at some things and think it’d be easier to just toss them than restore them. But this chair exceeded every expectation.

I spotted this white dresser at my friend’s place — her father had once painted it white. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a gorgeous grain beneath that paint.

Someone threw out this vintage sofa, but we decided to give it a second life. The new color makes it look stylish.

Vintage furniture has plenty of fans.

  • I saw an oak armchair left by the dumpster. It was dirty, but I loved the design. My husband said I was crazy while we were carrying it home. I decided to reupholster it.
    I removed the fabric, and suddenly a bundle fell onto the floor. Inside, wrapped in a handkerchief and an old newspaper, were 2 things: a lock of fair hair and a black-and-white photo of a pretty girl. On the back it said: “To Alex from Lindsey. Yours forever.”
    I don’t know who kept this photo and this lock, or why, or from whom they hid their treasure inside the chair’s upholstery, but it must have been some touching story of first love that outsiders weren’t meant to know.
