There’s a lot of history behind the fashion trends we see in films. The clothing on our favorite characters isn’t just pulled out of thin air. Instead, it’s often carefully selected and researched by costume designers who understand that what people wear conveys more than just style. Let’s look at some iconic pieces from classic scenes that are more than just stylish fabric.

1. Traditional Zulu hats were used as inspiration in Black Panther.

There are many African influences in Black Panther. In this movie, the characters’ headdresses were inspired by traditional Zulu hats. These hats are made of grass and cotton. They are worn during special ceremonies, such as weddings.

2. The fashion designer in House of Gucci had access to the brand’s archive.

The costume designer in House of Gucci was granted access to the lavish vintage archives of the brand. She was able to dig up some of the most stunning pieces from Gucci’s past and incorporate them into her designs for the movie.

3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s iconic little black dress was made by Givenchy.

In the film, Audrey Hepburn wears a black dress designed by Givenchy. The dress is still iconic today, even though it was designed in the ’60s. The gown included a sleeveless design, a low-cut back, and black elbow-length gloves.

One piece of the dress is kept in the Givenchy archive. Another can be found in the Museum of Garment in Madrid. And the last one was sold at a Christie’s auction for more than 607,000 euros in 2006.

4. Alan Rickman helped design Snape’s costume in Harry Potter.

In Harry Potter, Alan Rickman influenced Snape’s wardrobe. The actor advised the costume team on how to design Snape’s clothes because he had a vision of how he should look. Rickman felt he needed a costume with many buttons because he pictured Snape buttoning up when he developed the character. Also, he wanted the sleeves to be tight.

5. Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress didn’t interest the designer.

The image of the blonde in a billowing white dress is perhaps the most recognizable picture of Marilyn Monroe. The designer responsible for the costume was William Travilla, who didn’t pay much attention to his creation and dismissed it by calling it a “silly little dress.” However, one of the 3 versions of the dress sold for $4.6 million.

6. The iconic boots in The Devil Wears Prada are a tribute to Coco Chanel.

It’s no secret that The Devil Wears Prada is one of the most famous movies. Many of the scenes in the film have become iconic in the world of cinema. A famous example is a scene in which fashion journalist Andy Sachs transforms her look by wearing a pair of Chanel boots.

Coco Chanel was known for her love of tall boots, but she never put them into her collections. She wore them frequently, and they were custom-made by the house of Massaro.

Which movie has the most stylish fashion choices? What would it be if you could have any fictional character’s wardrobe?
