I Refuse to Train a New Hire Who Earns 42% More Than Me, So I Brought the Receipts

In an ideal world, all workplaces would treat their employees fairly, with compassion and generosity. However, not everyone is that lucky. New employees often get better salaries than loyal workers, some coworkers may get promoted faster, and managers don’t always appreciate everything you do. But there is a difference between accepting normal workplace differences and realizing your company has been taking your hard work for granted. When that happens, even the most patient employee can eventually reach a breaking point.
I chased a raise for six years. It was exhausting but I kept my patience. Every time around appraisals, I asked my boss about a raise. He told me I needed to prove myself first — “Work harder. Lots of room for improvement.” So I did exactly that. I took on extra responsibilities, trained new employees with no extra pay, and handled difficult projects. Kept waiting for the raise that just never came.

Instead, he asked me to train a new “intern”. I didn’t think much of it, as he usually asked me to do it. So I just said yes. Then I accidentally saw the offer letter for the person I was training. He was being offered about 42% more than I was making after six years at the company. After six years of begging for a promotion. It hit me so hard that not only was I tricked into training my own replacement, but also the company always had the funds. They just didn’t want to pay ME.
I went and confronted my boss. Showed him the offer letter. Went there expecting a rational explanation but this man really had the nerve to LAUGH and say, “Oh I was going to tell you soon but it’s good that you found out on your own. You have an eye for details.” For the salary gap, he said: “New-hire salaries were based on the current market and that the company’s hiring budget was different from existing employee compensation. That’s how businesses work”.
I realized there was no point in talking back or arguing with him. He already knows how hard I’ve worked for a raise. He chose to ignore it all and hire a new person anyway. So I went back home and pulled out all the receipts — all my overtime, all the times I was just paid in “goodwill” or a “great job”, all old performance reviews, records of projects I’d completed, and messages from managers thanking me for training new employees. And the emails where I’d previously asked about raises and my boss had told me to wait.
Next day, I went straight to the HR office. I was being wronged and I wasn’t going to stay silent anymore or spend another month here without a raise. I told them about everything and showed them the evidence. And guess what? They told me my boss had never once submitted a request to consider me for a raise. They then called my boss in. He was shocked, to say the least. I guess he just expected me to continue being his doormat.
To sum it all up. HR offered me a 45% raise + keep my current role. The new hire turned out to be my boss’s relative who not only got special treatment, but also lacked the credentials for the role. He was told to work as an actual intern first for 6 months. As for my boss, he’s being transferred to a smaller branch and will probably also get a pay cut. Karma is real, people.
