A freshly brewed cup of coffee is a perfect start of every morning. And, throughout the day, a cup of coffee is equivalent to 5 minutes of delicious relaxation. In the world of cosmetics, caffeine is also excellent for stimulating and awakening the skin, and it’s possible to include it in our basic beauty routine that we have at home, using the coffee we drink daily as the main ingredient.

Bright Side wants to share with you 5 simple recipes that have coffee with you, that will awaken your natural beauty to the fullest.

Benefits of coffee for skin and hair

Coffee has the main alkaloid compound, caffeine. In cosmetics, this element is appreciated for the benefits it provides to the health of the skin. If you look at the labels of the cosmetic products you use, you will notice that caffeine is present in many formulas.

Of course, depending on the type of skin and the area to be treated, caffeine works in different ways. The good thing is that this substance can be used in its most natural state, to prepare creams, shampoos, and homemade scrubs, free of artificial compounds, which help to make your skin and hair healthy and shiny. How? Here are 5 very easy recipes:

1. Exfoliating mask

Coffee is a natural exfoliant, excellent for removing dead skin cells. It stimulates the production of collagen and acts as an anti-inflammatory. After a relaxing coffee mask, the skin on the neck and face will be soft, clean, and smooth.

You will need:

  • 1 cup of ground coffee (150 g)
  • 1 cup of brown sugar (200 g)
  • 3 tbsp of olive oil (48 g)
  • 2 tbsp of honey (50 g)

How to prepare:

Mix all the elements in a container and make sure that the mask is not too thick. The texture should be rather light and easy to spread on the face.

How to use:

Apply a layer of the mask all over your face and neck. While doing so, take the opportunity to massage the skin. Let it sit until it dries and rinse with warm water. Keep the container tightly closed in the fridge so you can apply the mask once a week.

2. Lip scrub

Lips are the biggest contributor to a beautiful smile, that’s why it’s necessary to keep your lips hydrated and healthy. This can be accomplished by drinking enough water, using a lip balm daily, and removing dry skin. The good thing is that you can make a simple and cheap scrub at home.

You will need:

  • 1 tsp of ground coffee
  • 2 tsp of olive oil (or any other oil you prefer)

How to prepare:

Mix both ingredients in a cup or bowl until combined. You should get a firm paste.

How to use:

Apply the scrub to your lips and use your finger to gently massage the scrub in circular motions. Use at least 3 times a week. Rinse with water and then apply your favorite moisturizing balm.

3. Shampoo

Coffee contains properties that make it excellent for hair and scalp care. It stimulates blood circulation and removes dead skin cells, preventing hair loss. It also strengthens the hair, darkens the natural color a little, and provides a pleasant aroma. If you dream of long and healthy hair, this homemade shampoo is exactly what you need.

You will need:

  • Neutral shampoo
  • 5 tablespoons of ground coffee
  • 1 cup of water

How to prepare:

Use a shampoo that doesn’t contain many components, the most neutral one that you have in the bathroom. Heat the water a little, without boiling it. Let it cool a little and mix the water with the coffee in the same cup. Stir to integrate. With the help of a funnel, pour the mixture into the shampoo bottle. Cover and shake well. Let the shampoo sit for 2 hours before using it.

How to use:

Apply the shampoo as you normally would, massaging the scalp in a circular motion. Leave the product on for 5 minutes and rinse well. You can use it 2 or 3 times a week.

4. Dark circle patches

Poor sleep, stress, or illness are the frequent causes of the appearance of bags and dark circles under the eyes, which make you look tired and older. Fighting them is very simple, and you can do it using just 2 ingredients: coffee and a potato! Black coffee generates an increase in the production of collagen. On top of that, potatoes contain vitamin B6 and vitamin D, that are good for the skin. In addition, it refreshes the look.

You will need:

  • 1/4 cup concentrated black coffee without sugar
  • 2 potato slices

How to prepare:

Soak the 2 potato slices in a cup of very cold black coffee. Leave the slices in the coffee for 2 minutes and drain.

How to use:

Place the slices over your eyes and let them sit for 20 minutes. Use these patches as many times as you need to.

5. Body scrub

Coffee is very good for fighting cellulite because, as we mentioned before, it stimulates blood circulation. This helps remove excess fluid that accumulates in the connective tissue. It takes a few extra minutes to include coffee in your beauty routine, but it’s definitely worth the time.

You will need:

5 tsp of ground coffee
3 tsp of wheat germ oil
Plastic wrap

How to prepare:

Mix both ingredients in a bowl until they form a thick paste.

How to use:

Apply the mixture to the areas of your body that you consider problematic (thighs, arms, buttocks, and belly). Cover with plastic wrap for 30 minutes. Remove the plastic, massage the area in a circular motion for 5 minutes, and rinse with warm water. Use it twice a week.
