You wake up in the middle of the night from the feeling as if someone’s peering at you from the darkness. You open your eyes and see...oh, hi, Biscuit. Your pet hamster that you took in just yesterday is sitting right before you. And there’s something... primal about it.Suddenly, the hamster stands up on its hind legs and howls like a wolf! Only much higher, like a whistle. Then, Biscuit scampers to the window, takes one last look at you and jumps out into the street. What in the world was that!?
Well, it’s that time of year again: Spring cleaning! Making your way outside, you grab the duster and broom to get rid of all those cobwebs on your windows. They don’t stand a chance this time! Removing one cobweb after the other, you suddenly notice some weird shaped mud stuck under the eaves and porch! What’s this?It suddenly dawns on you: these have to be Mud Dauber Wasp nests! You’re probably thinking there’s a swarm of them around with so many nests being side by side! Luckily, Mud Dauber Wasps are solitary insects. Phew! All those little mud huts are filled with paralyzed spiders. Sometimes, even up to 500 spiders can be trapped in these lockers, just waiting for the wasp young to hatch.
Now if you step on a sea urchin, you’re going to know right away! Look at those spikes! Get the point? Ha ha, ow! While they’re not aggressive, they’ve got a great defense going against any creatures that want to eat them! Venomous spikes and a poisonous bite! Pick your poison, literally.
Zzzzzzzzz doink! What was that on your arm? A bee, great. Not exactly a pleasant feeling. Painful, itchy, annoying, scary. We’ve all been there before. So, that happens because the bee jabs its barbed stinger into your skin and releases some venom. That venom contains proteins that cause pain and can affect your immune system and skin cells.
Bzzzzz. Ouch. There’s hardly a person who’s never been stung by a bee. It’s definitely not a pleasant feeling. But bees aren’t normally angry creatures — you probably just scared the little guy! These insects are super important for pollination. Their existence is one of the main reasons why our plants keep growing. Bees only sting when they feel threatened. If you get stung, it might mean you’ve come too close to them — or, more importantly, that you’ve come too close to their hive.
At the beginning of the 20th century, somewhere off the coast of West Africa, a German steamship was leaving the port. Suddenly, the weather got worse, and the vessel entered a thick fog. The sailors ran aground on a sandbank close to the shore. Luckily, no one was hurt, and they were even able to save their precious cargo. But the ship was stuck in the sand for good. And it was not alone there. Nearly the entire length of the western coast of Namibia is called Skeleton Coast. If the name sounds scary, that’s because it is. This 976-mile-long beach line is among the most dangerous places on Earth. The local Bushman tribes believe that their supreme deity made this land when it was angry. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to set foot in Namibia in the 15th century. And yup, they didn’t like Skeleton Coast, either. Portuguese explorers thought this land presented the gates to the underworld. This is the place where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. It might be dangerous, but it’s actually beautiful, plus it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Filmmakers often challenge viewers’ attentiveness by incorporating hidden messages and Easter eggs in their movies. These messages can reveal character backstories, provide clues for story development, or pay homage to other films. In this article, we have uncovered hidden messages in popular movies to showcase the creative prowess of skilled directors.
Endless hot deserts seem lifeless at first glance. But among these sands, you can meet dangerous and sometimes creepy creatures. Some of them can only cause health problems, but some can stay in your memory forever. Let’s get to know them, starting with dangerous ones and finishing with real nightmares.
No one expected such a strong storm. It’s too dangerous to sail back to the land because of high waves and winds. But suddenly, you notice a small green island nearby. You and your friend are about 25 miles [40 km] off the coast of Brazil. You were fishing and didn’t notice black clouds obscuring the blue sky. You’re approaching the unknown island and see a coast guard boat behind you. People from there are screaming something to you, but you can’t make out the words because of the thunder. “They tell us we should stay away from that island,” your friend says.
You can use peanut butter to make diamonds. Before you run to the supermarket to get all the peanut butter you’ll find there, here’s something you need to figure out first — how to recreate the conditions of the lower mantle of our planet. You’ll need to support such conditions for weeks just to create a tiny piece of diamond. Just so you know, the temperature should be 1,832˚F. Here’s something that will make you question everything you know: strawberries aren’t actual berries, but bananas are! Cucumbers, bananas, and kiwis are all classified as berries, while blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries are not.
You’re trembling. Drops of sweat are dripping down your face. Your frightened eyes look up, watching a big flying bug. The Asian Giant Hornet, the size of a thumb, is hovering above you. It’s one of the most dangerous insects on the planet. And not just because its sting looks like a needle. This insect can cause a real economic crisis all over the world and lead to the mass extinction of many species of living creatures on Earth.
Amongst the swamps lives a strange bird with a Dutch clog for a beak. It screeches a high pitch whine, notifying other shoebills that this is its area when it comes to food. Its eerie calls add to the surrounding roars of dinosaurs in the distance. It’s not hunting dinosaurs, though, of course, but snakes, fish, lizards, and frogs amongst the reeds.
Hello distinguished guests and welcome to Aquarium Bright! Here, you will get to see the most dangerous sea and ocean creatures. But don’t let what I said mislead you! It’s very well possible for you to come across one of these underwater animals during a walk at the beach. So, take a look at them carefully now, and you might just avoid a disaster.
Sometimes getting near certain animals, birds, insects, or plants could be a terrible idea. Though at first, all those things may look inviting (some are even adorable). Take for instance slow lorises. Super-cute creatures on the outside and pretty deadly if you go “aww,” approach them, and try to pet them.
Evolution, as we all probably know, is the change of attributes and features of a species over a long period of time. Everything around us evolves steadily, no matter what it is. Our shape, body parts, and measurements have all transformed, including our DNA, and it all gradually gave us new features. Since we are aware of how we’ve evolved from the past, there are some new theories that indicate how we might look in the future.
Many kids imagine themselves having the superpowers of a spider, some animal, or a bird. But what if we turn on our imaginations and really think about what advantages we would have if we could borrow certain animal features and use them in our everyday life? From a scientific point of view, some of those abilities would come in very handy, and others could even save lives.
There are more than 8 million animal species in nature, and each looks different. Sometimes it seems to us that some of them are simply made to be affectionate and cute, such as a lazy panda or a funny prairie dog. However, even these animals have adapted to the harsh world around them and can be quite dangerous to humans.
Daring creatures, such as non-poisonous snakes or scorpions, have quickly become pets for those wanting a more unique companion. They are often harmless and even low-maintenance. Such species are not only fascinating to look at, but they also break the rules when it comes to ordinary pets.
Nothing is probably as relaxing as a sunny day on the beach. But even the most carefree vacation can be ruined by these little guys if you unexpectedly come across them. These sea creatures, snails, starfish, and even snakes, are beautiful but venomous, and they may be lying right next to you while you are sunbathing.
People who act without hesitation in an emergency situation, like nurses, firefighters, and cops, have rewired their brains and are able to control their fear response. The ordinary person can do this too with experience and repetition. And whether it’s being trapped inside a room that is rapidly filling with water or one that is on fire, we have to act quickly. Luckily for you, there is a safe way to test just how good your survival skills are!
Even when it seems like a situation is really bad and there’s no way out of it, our brain can actually do the trick. In critical situations, when the brain detects a risk or threat, it activates a survival system and gets ready to take immediate action.
Knowing the basic facts of first aid can literally help you save lives, including your own. When you find yourself in the middle of an emergency situation, it’s best to know how to assess a situation, what you can do to help, and even know the difference between what helps and what doesn’t. Let’s just say a simple gauze pad is usually more effective than a tourniquet when dealing with bleeding.
In 2018, a great number of spectacular movies were released on the big screen. Each of them took viewers into a different universe: we had to fight in Avengers: Infinity War, tremble from Venom’s “charming” smile, and worry about the fate of the guests in Bad Times at the El Royale. But deep inside, we were curious to learn about how these great movies were created.
We all understand that not all movie stars are marvelous enough to jump from 30 meters high and fight like martial arts masters (except Jackie Chan, of course). But it’s not so easy to see the real heroes who perform such incredible stunts: even official websites are reluctant to talk about the film’s stuntmen. But nothing can stop Bright Side. And today we present the coolest and the nicest stuntmen from very popular movies.
There are many rules out there explaining how to behave in emergency situations. But are all of them really that effective? We at Bright Side have found out that some of those survival tips are actually myths that are not only useless but also potentially dangerous.
